This involves not only synchronizing the beats of the songs to be mixed, but also incrementally adjusting the pitches of the songs so that during the transition, neither song sounds unnatural. Your goal in this project is to use signal processing to produce a computerized DJ that can automatically produce a non-stop mix of music given a library of non-synchronized tracks as input. On top of this basic specification, additional points will be given for implementing advanced techniques like sampling, beat juggling and airbeats that make the mix more exciting. At the end of the term, the computer DJs will face off in a Battle for World Supremacy with a library of entirely novel songs. We’ll be featuring a different Vancouver based band each issue starting with scum punks the Excessives. With the new Arena and Rod Stewart having played Victoria, you can just feel that this is going to be a great year for live music around town. I’m always impressed with the turnout and energy of the younger crowds at the all-ages shows. Even if you’re old you should go check one out sometime. You might find it invigorating to jump in a circle pit of mohawked fury. It was great hanging out with the crew at Spitfire Tattoo special thanks to Rick and Amanda. Electric Frankenstein was an amazing show and just proves that Victoria gets wicked shows all the time. A big middle finger to the asshole bouncers @ Diego’s who wouldn’t let me in even though I was on the guest list and then proceeded to tell the headlining act CHOKE to “pack their shit, they weren’t going to play.” This was after two huge idiots working the door beat up CHOKE’s drummer who weighs about a buck ten soaking wet.

Gatekeeping has expanded into other fields throughout the years, with its concepts growing more and more easily applicable in many other aspects of life. One way it presents itself is in regard to racial inclusion and equality, and despite the headway we’ve seemingly made as a society, we are still lightyears away from where we need to be. Because of this, the concept of cultural property has become even more paramount, as a means for keeping one’s cultural history and identity preserved.
