  • Taking Comics Seriously
POP CULTURE clusively with daytime. The show features no gunfights or car chases; there are moments of leisurely, uneventful conversation between the younger and older generations. It is a curious inversion: Where once daytime TV fled prime time, prime time now copies daytime. The evidence is every- where, from the success of The Forsyte Saga and Upstairs Down- stairs (soap operas with extra starch) to major television serials like Rich Man Poor Man, Roots, and Captains and Kings. Spec- taculars aside, even a regular offering such as Family reflects a soap-opera sense of continuity. The major characters suffer. They have affairs, consider marriage, drop out of school, worry about mortality It goes too far to say that daytime dramas are genuinely realistic. The necessities of the form require too many brushes with the kinds of crises that most families would suffer only a few times in a generation. But both soaps and game shows have certainly tried to move television closer to what Paddy Chayefsky called "the marvelous world of the ordinary." What daytime TV has given prime time is the possibility of exploring characters not through the prism of fantasy, but through a focus closer to the way most of us spend our lives. And that is no mean contribution. TAKING COMICS SERIOUSLY by Arthur Asa Berger New art forms are often greeted with derision. Attic tragedy was denounced by conservative Greeks, impressionism by high- brow Parisians. Americans, too, have snubbed new, indigenous art forms. The comics, for example, like jazz music, are a home- grown American product; and like jazz, they were long ignored by "serious" critics.

Raymond apprenticed with Chic Young on Blondie, and Lymon Young on Tim Tyler's Luck. The year 1934 was a major turning point in his career: he illustrated X- 9, a new detective comic strip written by Dashiell Hammett, and then created Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim. Rip Kirby, created in 1946, signaled a grand departure, both thematically and artistically, from the science fiction classic. He promulgated a new art style--one of cinematic photo-realism--that influenced such artists as Stan Drake, Leonard Starr, Al Williamson, and Neal Adams. Great art, good printing IDW produced another great book, beautifully crafted, with an interesting essay on Alex Raymond and Rip Kirby. Every effort was made to find the best sources for the dailies: it's a pity that they are not - apparently - syndicated proofs; very few are from original art (the first week and some others); the bulk is made of pretty good reproductions, some from second generation sources; some are not so good... I wonder: where are the KFS proofs?Forgive my English Five Stars Presenting the first volume of Alex Raymond's modernist classic Rip Kirby from its start in 1946. Created by Alex Raymond when he was deactivated from the Marines after World War II, Rip Kirby was a fresh approach to the genre, a departure from the prevailing hard-boiled style of detective fiction.

Neal Adams was robbed of a briefcase on the subway recently. The briefcase contained a great deal of art in various stages, including breakdowns and finished art for Marvel and DC and a model for the ACBA membership card., Adams has frequently been late getting his work in and this has caused him to miss several already-extended deadlines. He may lose several jobs as a result. Green Lantern/Green Arrow 87 will be all reprint as a result. Gil Kane will do an origin issue of Ka-Zar and then John Buscema will take over. • Editor & Publisher International Year Books
Content Survey & Selective Index For Editor & Publisher International Year Books *1929-1949 Compiled by Gary M. Johnson Reference Librarian Newspaper & Current Periodical Room Serial & Government Publications Division Library of Congress 2013 This survey of the contents of the 1929-1949 Editor & Publisher International Year Books consists of two parts: a page-by-page selective transcription of the material in the Year Books and a selective index to the contents (topics, names, and titles) of the Year Books. The purpose of this document is to inform researchers about the contents of the E&P Year Books in order to help them determine if the Year Books will be useful in their work. Secondly, creating this document has helped me, a reference librarian in the Newspaper & Current Periodical Room at the Library of Congress, to learn about the Year Books so that I can provide better service to researchers. The transcript was created by examining the Year Books and recording the items on each page in page number order. Advertisements for individual newspapers and specific companies involved in the mechanical aspects of newspaper operations were not recorded in the transcript of contents or added to the index. The index (beginning on page 33) attempts to provide access to E&P Year Books by topics, names, and titles of columns, comic strips, etc., which appeared on the pages of the Year Books or were mentioned in syndicate and feature service ads. The headings are followed by references to the years and page numbers on which the heading appears. The individual Year Books have detailed indexes to their contents.

But the list might understand- ably omit one item: a mysterious 1946 comic- book adaptation of The Maltese Falcon published by the little-known David McKay Co. Some die-hard comic-book fans are un- aware of it. Fewer still have even laid eyes on it. It’s a book that’s as rare as it is obscure. The Falcon comic-book was actually part of a series entitled “Fea- ture Books,” released by the McKay group and distributed by King Features Syndicate. Hammett actually wrote it—sort of. The book’s word balloons duplicate snippets of dialog lifted directly from Ham- mett’s source novel. The Thrilling Detective Web Site lauds the comic as “. supposedly quite well-done, very faithful to both the book and the film." That statement is partially true. In a mere 47 pages, the Above: Rodlow Willard’s Falcon comic cleanly and concisely capsulizes Hammett’s story. But colorful, eye-catching the necessity of its publication is questionable: Hammett’s novel and cover for the Feature Books adaptation of The John Huston’s superb 1941 film were probably all that needed to be Maltese Falcon. Right: said—or read—about the Black Bird. the cover for the story's This comic-book redux is also marred by Rodlow Willard’s dull, original appearance in the Sept.
