Pliakas1* 1 Engineering Geology Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, Democritus University of Thrace, 67132 Xanthi, Greece 2 Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology Laboratory, School of Mining Engineering and Metallurgy, National Technical University of Athens, 157 80 Athens, Greece * e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: This paper presents the updated vulnerability assessment of Xilagani - Imeros aquifer system in the coastal plain region of Rhodope Prefecture, NE Greece, in the framework of the groundwater management in the region. Information regarding the geological and geomorphological environment, as well as data concerning the hydrologic and hydrogeological regime of the study area are stated. The paper presents the application of DRASTIC and GALDIT vulnerability indexes procedures and the design of easy to use vulnerability maps in order to identify the parts where there is a serious potential for groundwater resources qualitative degradation due to agricultural pollution (DRASTIC approach) or seawater intrusion (GALDIT approach). The research is based on the results of hydrogeological studies in the study area for the year 2015 compared to the year 2006, including field hydrogeological measurements and chemical analyses in the laboratory, as well as the design of groundwater piezometric maps and hydrochemical maps. It is worth mentioning that DRASTIC index values for the year 2015 do not differ substantially compared to the corresponding values for the year 2006. Instead, increase of GALDIT index values is recorded for the year 2015 indicating worsening of the groundwater salinization status due to seawater intrusion. -

Relevant field works including in-situ measurements of groundwater level, pH, Specific Electrical Conductivity (SEC) and temperature took place in the years 2008 and 2009. Groundwater samples were also collected for chemical analysis at the Engi- neering Geology Laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering of D.U.Th. (July of 2009). Im- portant conclusions regarding the progress of the groundwater degradation at the study area were drawn based on the analysis of all the available data and the elaboration of the designed piezomet- ric maps and the various maps showing the distribution of SEC, Chloride, SAR (Sodium Absorption Ratio) and Revelle coefficient values. -

Abstract Approximately half of the world’s population are living or working in a narrow zone of a 100 km ffom the world coastlines. In this paper the erosion problems appearing in the central part of the Greek Thrace coastline (Rhodope Prefecture), are examined. The coastline studied is more than 100 km long and belongs to Xanthi-Komotini tectonic basin and is not well developed economically yet. From geomorphologic point of view the aforementioned coastal zone is principally a hilly area, consisting of Miocene, loose to semi-consolidated deposits (gravels, sands, silty-clays and conglomerates). This material is impregnated with CaCOs and/or Si02, in various degrees, forming a caliche (calcrete) deposit at the lower part of the column. The impregnation material is increasing with depth forming nodules of CaCOs in the upper layers and turning to hard marl limestone or calcareous sandstone at greater depth. Small torrent deltas are built at the exits of valleys to the sea. The serious problems of the coastal erosion are concentrated principally to the upper, loose or semi consolidated part of the sedimentary column. The height of the coastal cliffs (bluffs) varies from one to 30 m and the rate of their retreat fluctuates from a few centimeters to 3 m/year. -

Tartaron INTRODUCTION Archaeologists of the ancient Mediterranean concerned with maritime inter- actions of all kinds have been encouraged in recent years to explore networks from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. In this article I wish to assess the appropriateness of recent social network analysis (SNA) language and models for capturing maritime networks of the Greek (Aegean) Bronze Age, c. 3100–1050 BC, in their entirety; that is, at all scales and embracing as many actors as possible. The main point I wish to make is that the realities of the Bronze Age placed constraints on communication that are not relevant to the traditional concerns and subjects of SNA as they emerged from sociology (or of network theory in physics). Indeed, these studies demonstrate that the forma- tion and intensity of modern social networks are often not driven or con- strained by physical proximity. I contend that for the vast majority of Bronze Age coastal dwellers, distance was a decisive factor in the maritime networks in which they participated, which were as much social as economic. Thus terminology and models drawn from SNA may not fit particularly well with the conditions of prehistory. This is especially the case for local-scale maritime networks, which have also received insufficient attention from archaeologists. I summarize a multi-scalar, diachronic model of Bronze Age maritime net- works that is based on nested geographical scales, from local to international. -

Mussel farming in Vistonikos Bay, North Aegean, constitutes an activity of high socio-economic importance. The wide area consists of three basins rich in organic material, namely Porto Lagos Lagoon, Vistonicos Gulf and Vistonida lake. Oceanographic morphology, sea currents, meteorological and climatic conditions, as well as the primary productivity of the wide marine area of Vistonikos Bay, favor mussel farming development but sometimes may affect them harmfully. In the present review, historical oceanographic and meteorological data are discussed, including seawater temperature, air temperature, monthly rainfall and wind dynamics, in an aquaculture related point of view. -

Some managerial suggestions for the confrontation of the seawater intrusion regime of the study area are also included. The investigation in question took place between 1994-1997 and 2002-2006, and involved drilling of test wells, geoelectric sounding measurements, grain size analyses, elaboration of hydro logical data, moni toring and relevant analysis of the groundwater level fluctuations in selective wells, electrical conductivity measurements as well as conducting chemical analyses of wa ter samples from selective wells of the study area and relevant elaboration. Key words: coastal aquifers, sea water intrusion, groundwater quality. Περίληψη Στην εργασία διερευνάται η εξέλιξη της υφαλμύρινσης των υπόγειων νερών του πεδι νού τμήματος Ξυλαγανής-Ιμέρου στο ΝΑ τμήμα του Νομού Ροδόπης, καθώς και η κα ταλληλότητα τους για πόση και άρδευση, μετά από ποιοτική αξιολόγηση δειγμάτων νε ρού από επιλεγμένες γεωτρήσεις της περιοχής έρευνας βάσει σχετικών οδηγιών.
