Jundah Sulaiman, MA. Since the five essays fall into two distinct groups, it has been decided to publish them in two volumes bearing different titles, namely, Studies in Islamic Poetry and Studies in Islamic Mysticism. The latter comprise (i) an account of the famous Persian Sufi, Abu Sa'id ibn Abi '1-Khayr dervish, abbot, saint, and reputed poet drawn from documents singularly rich in detail which shed a rather disillusioning light upon his character; (2) a study of 'Abdu '1-Karim al- Jili's treatise entitled al-Insdn al-Kdmil or "The Perfect Man," a very curious exposition of the Mohammedan Logos doctrine by a Muhyawf, i.e. one whose modes of thought are derived from Muhyi'ddin Ibnu 'l-'Arabi; (3) an essay on the Odes of Ibnu '1-Farid, which unite mysticism with poetry of the rarest kind, but are so veiled in allegory that a glimpse of the meaning underneath is sometimes as much as we can obtain.

According to traditional practice, the spoils are carried along in the procession. They are called cultural treasures, and a historical materialist views them with cautious detachment. For without exception the cultural treasures he surveys have an origin which he cannot contemplate without horror. Ill ART. V.—On the earliest Persian Biography of Poets, by Muhammad Aufi, and on some other Works of the class called TazMrat ul Shuara. By N. BLAND, ESQ. [Bead nth February, 1846.] ON a former occasion, I had the honour of laying before the Society an account of one of the most modern and comprehensive Persian works on Poetical Biography. In examining the authorities to which it referred, and in comparing similar compilations, I was led to inves- tigate the actual number of native sources accessible to us on that subject, and was gratified by finding they existed to a far greater extent, than would be presumed from the very limited proportion, in which they have hitherto been made use of, or described. There results from the inquiry the following list of Biographies, specially devoted to the poets, without taking into account those historical or geographical works, in which literary memoirs or anec- dotes are incidentally introduced, nor even dictionaries of learned or holy men, who have also been poets, but whose claims for insertion rest chiefly on other merits'. • Sources of the Sultanate Period
Sources of the Sultanate Period A large number of literary sources are available for the medieval period. They provide a more reliable information and insight about the life of the people of the period. These sources inform us of the administrative set up of the rulers, their theory of kingship, military achievements etc. They also reflect the state of cultural, economic, political and religious institutions. We should keep in view the following points while utilizing these sources: (1) Absolute historical truth is elusive, (2) Absolute impartial history is rather impossible, (3) Every kind of prejudice, caste, faith, personal racial, regional and religious etc., possessed by the historian has exercised some influence in recording events and facts, (4) All possible efforts need to be made to sift facts from fiction, (5) Since most of the books were written on the command of the rulers or by them, they contain material which has to be treated with care and caution, (6) Different sources to be used while arriving at some definite conclusion. Important Chronicles: Kamilut-Tawarikh of Ibnul Asir: For the history of Central Asia and the Rise of the Shansabani Dynasty of Ghor, the Kamilut-Tawarikh of Ibnul Asir gives us a lot of information. The book was completed in 1230. The author was a contemporary to many of the events narrated in the last two volumes of his work He used a critical judgment in utilizing his sources of information and the result was that his account has rarely been found to be wrong. As regards his notices of Indian affairs, those are remarkably correct so far as the dates and essential facts are concerned.

  • History of Sind During Pre-Mughal Period
HISTORY OF SIND DURING PRE-MUGHAL PERIOD ABSTRACT Thesis Submitted for the Degree of ©ottor of ^I)ilo£(opf)p IN HISTORY BY ARSHAD ISLAM Under the supervision of Dr. MUHAMMAD ZAKI CENTRE OF ADVANCED STUDY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 1990 ABSTRACT Sind, the cradle of one of the great ancient civilizations of the world has played a very significant role in the making of our history. Its cities and towns have been centre of culture and religion since almost the dawn of the history in the Region. From the geographical points of view, the main importance of Sind lies in the fact that it was the gateway of India and had served as a conduit through which many foreign communities including Arabs were able to establish commercial and cultural relations with India. The Arab rulers used it as a base for the military operations to conquer the region further north of Sind. Before the Arab conquest, Sind was an independent kingdom ruled by Raja Dahar, Muhammad bin Qasim conquered it in 712 A.D. and made it a part of the Umayyad Empire. Apart from being a part of the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphate for about two hundred years, it had been under the rule of different Independent dynasties mainly Habbari, Banu Sama, Ismailis, Suralrahs and the Summahs. It was incorporated into Delhi Sultanate and for long it was ruled by the governors appointed by Delhi Sultans. Afterward, it came under the rule of Arghuns of Central Asia in 1520 A.D. before passing into the hands of the Mughals during the reign of Akbar.

International Advances in Engineering and Technology (IAET) ISSN: 2305-8285 Vol.23 2014 International Scientific Researchers (ISR)www.scholarism.net A REVIEW ON PERSIAN LITERATURE, MODERN ASPECTS Saemeh Khorasani Department of Literature, Tehran Markaz Branch, Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran Abstract- Persian literature is the jewel in the crown of Persian culture. It has profoundly influenced the literatures of Ottoman Turkey, Muslim India and Turkic Central Asia and been a source of inspiration for Goethe, Emerson, Matthew Arnold and Jorge Luis Borges among others. Yet Persian literature has never received the attention it truly deserves. A History of Persian Literature answers this need and offers a new, comprehensive and detailed history of its subject. Persian literature is one of the world's oldest literatures. It spans two-and-a-half millennia, though much of the pre-Islamic material has been lost. Keywords: Persian literature, Poetry, Islam, Essays, Introduction Persian literature sources have been within historical Persia including present-day Iran, Iraq and the Caucasus, as well as regions of Central Asia where the Persian language has historically been the national language. For instance, Molana (Rumi), one of Persia's best-loved poets, born in Balkh or Vakhsh (in what is now Afghanistan or Tajikistan), wrote in Persian, and lived in Konya, then the capital of the Seljuks. The Ghaznavids conquered large territories in Central and South Asia and adopted Persian as their court language. There is thus Persian literature from Iran, Mesopotamia, Azerbaijan, the wider Caucasus, Turkey, western parts of Pakistan, Tajikistan and other parts of Central Asia. Not all this literature is written in Persian, as some consider works written by ethnic Persians in other languages, such as Greek and Arabic, to be included.
