laura stark Peasants, Pilgrims, and Sacred Promises Ritual and the Supernatural in Orthodox Karelian Folk Religion Studia Fennica Folkloristica The Finnish Literature Society (SKS) was founded in 1831 and has, from the very beginning, engaged in publishing operations. It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. In addition to its publishing activities, the Finnish Literature Society maintains research activities and infrastructures, an archive containing folklore and literary collections, a research library and promotes Finnish literature abroad. SUSA/JSFOu 94, 2013 Konstantin ZAMYATIN (Helsinki) Finno-Ugric Republics and Their State Languages: Balancing Powers in Constitutional Order in the Early 1990s Most of Russia’s national republics established titular and Russian as co-official state languages in their constitutions of the early 1990s. There is no consensus on the reasons and consequences of this act, whether it should be seen as a mere symbolic gesture, a measure to ensure a language revival, an instrument in political debate or an ethnic institution. From an institutional and comparative perspective, this study explores the constitutional systems of the Finno-Ugric republics and demonstrates that across the republics, the official status of the state languages was among the few references to ethnicity built into their constitutions. However, only in the case of language require- ments for the top officials, its inclusion could be interpreted as an attempt at instrumen- tally using ethnicity for political ends. Otherwise, constitutional recognition of the state languages should be rather understood as an element of institutionalized ethnicity that remains a potential resource for political mobilization. This latter circumstance might clarify why federal authorities could see an obstacle for their Russian nation-building agenda in the official status of languages. 1. Introduction The period of social transformations of the late 1980s and early 1990s in Eastern Europe was characterized by countries’ transition from the communist administra- tive−command systems towards the representative democracy and market economy. One important driving force of change in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was the rise of popular movements out of national resentment and dissatis- faction with the state-of-the-art in the sphere of inter-ethnic relations. -

PUTIN, DEAR MR. SERDJUKOV, We, representatives of non-governmental international organization (NGO) “Coalition Clean Baltic” (CCB), appeal to the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and the Governor of Leningrad Oblast to support the proposals of Russians NGOs and initiative group of Primorsk city to relocate the shipyard from the woodland park in Primorsk, which is part of a green area with significant nature conservation and recreational values, to the industrial area of the Primorsk. Russia is planning for a big shipyard, a large industrial project, close to Primorsk city by the Gulf of Finland. The planned shipyard, in size 200 ha, would have a strong impact on many important natural and recreational values in this part of Karelian Isthmus. Only 2 km from this coastal area is the RAMSAR site "Birch islands" (decision of the Government №1050 from 13.09.1994), an important resting and feeding area for migrating bird species, e g whooper swan. -

This sector had been in continual decline since the break-up of the Soviet Union, but imports of breeding stock have resulted in a number of modern ranches. The Russian Federal and oblast governments offer a series of support programs meant to stimulate livestock development in the Russian Federation over the next seven years which are funded at hundreds of billions of Russian rubles (almost $10 billion). These programs are expected to lead to a recovery of the cattle industry. Monies have been allocated for both new construction and modernization of old livestock farms, purchase of domestic and imported of high quality breeding dairy and beef cattle, semen and embryos; all of which should have a direct and favorable impact on livestock genetic exports to Russia through 2020. Three periods to the development of tourism in the region are identified, while the article goes on to explore general trends and features characterising the development of a tourist destination, with the focus on tourist infrastructure, the developing types of tourism and tourism- oriented projects. Measures to further stimulate tourism as an economic activity of the region are suggested. The study By Oleg B. Alexandrov offers an analysis of the region’s various forms of international interactions and describes the internal situation in the republic, its economic conditions and its potential for integration into the European or the global economy. It also discusses the role of the main political actors and their attitude towards international relations. The author studies the general problem of center-periphery relations and federal issues, and weighs their effects on Karelia’s foreign relations. The paper argues that the international contacts of the regions in Russia’s Northwest, including those of the Republic of Karelia, have opened up opportunities for new forms of cooperation between Russia and the EU. These contacts have en- couraged a climate of trust in the border zone, alleviating the negative effects caused by NATO’s eastward enlargement. Moreover, the region benefits economi- cally from its geographical situation, but is also moving towards European standards through sociopolitical modernization. Sheep Girl, Hugo Simberg, THE MUSEUMS OF LAPPEENRANTA 2015 2 SOUTH KARELIA MUSEUM AND SOUTH KARELIA ART MUSEUM JOINT EXHIBITION 26 April 2015 – 10 January 2016 Barefoot: 10 Lives in the Karelian Isthmus The museums at the fortress of Lappeenranta will host an exhibition displaying various perspectives of the Karelian isthmus, opening in the spring. Barefoot: 10 Lives in the Karelian Isthmus is a joint exhibition situated in both the South Karelia Museum and South Karelia Art Museum. The exhibition will be constructed round ten narrators. The narrators are real people. They represent various milieus and regions, various socioeconomic Leonid Andreyev and Anna Andreyeva in groups, women, men and children. As a result, the exhibition does not compartmentalize the style of narration in the manner of art collections and historical collections: rather, the various types of ”evidence” in the exhibition are able to complement each other.
