Teaching and Learning Post 16 @ College After last year's mixed results growing on the allotments, this years 'changeable' weather has certainly been much more successful. We are seeing, weekly, the changes as seeds turn Our wonderful pupils to seedlings before bursting forth in their race for the sun!

The students have also been working at developing the plot by helping with moving allotment fixtures, creating a new access slope, clearing and cutting back overgrowth and building some new simple fencing to reduce trespassers having access. All the students do their best, which is all we can ask. However, someone who thrives in this physical and practical setting is Jordan. He has shown himself a willing worker throughout the seasons. Give him a clear task with a definite outcome and he is straight to work! So next time you experience all four seasons in one day, don't be downcast but think of all the greenery and life you see around you. And remember the old saying to 'make hay while the sun (with a little bit of rain) shines’! Callum in Napier Miles Post 16, has been carrying out voluntary work in the school Brightstowe Summer Fair and wider community this term and is always enthusiastic and ready for any task We raised £159 for the Grenfell Tower Tragedy. Environments

We have been recognised by The National Safety Certification Scheme for Schools, known as SafetyMARK, as having ‘excellent’ safety standards. The SafetyMARK scheme aims to provide guidance for schools and to recognise and reward those schools that have gone the extra mile to create a safe environment for staff, pupils, visitors and contractors. After a rigorous independent audit the school was able to demonstrate that it has first class levels of safety management and compliance and, in doing so, achieved the SafetyMARK Shantay in Napier Miles Secondary has award for excellence. been making good choices when she has Justin Smith of SafetyMARK stated, “Kingsweston School has a really positive attitude been feeling upset this term & has really with regard to health and safety and it is clear to see that safety is taken extremely improved her attendance. School Events Our wonderful pupils Great Get Together Kingsweston hosted a ‘Great Get Together’, in memory of the death of the MP Jo Cox, whose lifelong message that “we have more in common than that which divides us” is one we felt it was important to remember. Classes from all sites assembled at

Kingsweston House for a picnic and an afternoon of relaxed fun, with football, cricket, cakes and strawberries. We would like to thank all the parents and family members who joined us to celebrate this special occasion.

Well done Zak at our Brightstowe site for maintaining a positive mind-set, showing resilience, responsibility & staying focused Election on achieving his goals to the end. Students have been busy pulling up our harvest of onions and potatoes as well as keeping on top of the continual watering process for the beans, courgettes, tomatoes, lettuces, cauliflowers, squashes and soft fruit bushes that are all growing in the Secret Garden and Polytunnel.

We’ve been racing snails this term and have been going on worm hunts, we’ve also found some frogs, toads and newts during Forest School sessions which have caused much excitement! We have enjoyed making some dens and playing in the tents on the field.

Our wild flower meadow is looking beautiful, students have enjoyed going on bug hunts, relaxing in the quiet space and exploring the flowers as well as doing some yoga and mindfulness activities.

Governors Area Some more information about how we as governors organise what we do. So that we can carry out the responsibilities we have as governors effectively, in relation to Kingsweston, we divide our work between several committees. One of these, which I chair, is responsible for overseeing the teaching and learning of the pupils and their safeguarding. It meets once every term. The head teacher, deputy head teacher and the business manager of the school join a group of five governors, and a clerk attends to record what we discuss and the decisions we make. Most of the information we receive comes to us in the form of documents, as graphs or data tables. The senior staff who attend give extra information about these and answer our questions. But so that we can see exactly how all of this relates to the young people who are pupils in our school and what they learn, members of staff come along to our meetings from time to time and explain part of what they do. Most recently an Assistant Head teacher attended and gave us an account of how staff plan each individual pupil’s progress as they engage with different learning activities and record what they achieve as a result. These staff presentations are some of the most popular parts of our agendas, they are invaluable in giving us background to and context for what we read, bringing alive all those facts and figures! It is also very nice to meet the individual members of staff and share their enthusiasm for what they do. Mary Kear; Governor
