n the late 19th century, Delaware was king of peach production, in I the United States and the world. Throughout southern Delaware, towns were born as farmers planted huge orchards and the railroad pushed south. At the peak of production in 1875, nearly six million bushels of Delaware peaches were shipped to market. By 1895, Delaware orchards contained more than 800,000 peach trees and the legislature voted to adopt the peach blossom as the state flower. On Saturday, August 15, Middletown will celebrate the Delaware peach at the16th annual Old-Tyme Peach Festival. Activities for the children New this year will be a children's activities area behind the big yellow Middletown Academy and Grounds on North Broad Street. The Venture Scouts will sponsor a rock wall to climb and a miniature golf area. Inside the Academy, the children can have a free scoop of peach ice cream, sit at old-fashioned school desks, try writing with a slate pencil on a slate, and play with old fashioned toys upstairs in the "Touch It" Room. Under the trees on the lawn in front of the Academy there will be lots for kids to do, including a Civil War muster, Biggs Museum art activity, watching the blacksmith hammering, and seeing how yam is spun and woven. . The Appoquinimink Boys and Girls Club will again have children's games, a moon bounce and train ride for young festi­ val-goers. Everything will be set in the parking lot of the club located at the comer of South Broad Street and West Green Street. Funds from grants and sporisors pay for the children's activities. At the front of the building on Broad Street is a stop for the hay wagon ride. Connection Church on West Green will have face painting, ice skating, snow cones, popcorn, games and a DJ all day. Rest rooms will be available, including a baby changing station at the church. The. Volunteer Hose Company Fire Hall, also on West Green, will have an open house and apparatus on display.
