A Study of Brazilian Cultural Issues and Servant Leadership Model for The ABSTRACT A STUDY OF BRAZILIAN CULTURAL ISSUES AND SERVANT LEADERSHIP MODEL FOR THE FEMALE PASTORS IN THE FIRST CONFERENCE OF THE METHODIST CHURCH IN BRAZIL by Miriam Isabel Gallo de Do Amaral The purpose of this research was to learn how cultural issues related to women in Brazil might enhance or hinder their potentiality and hold them back from acquiring the highest leadership positions within the Methodist Church in the First Conference of Rio de Janeiro. This study also explored the level of understanding of female pastors about the concept of the servant leadership model, learning if this model could apply to them more than the classical leadership model in their style of leadership. The study suggested that within the First Conference of the Methodist Church in Brazil the leadership style is changing from the classical model to the one more servant - oriented model. The findings provided a positive insight for further studies into female leadership as well as their vision for the church. Palavras-Chave: Brasil Império; Caudilhismo; Coronelismo; Castilhismo-borgismo; História do Rio Grande do Sul; Getúlio Vargas; Partido Republicano Rio-Grandense. ABSTRACT: The main objective of this article is to show why the possible “Platine” origins or “caudillo” (warlord) influences of Getulio Dornelles Vargas are not hold as determining factors in his political formation. Therefore, we started the article with a conceptual discussion about “caudillism” in the Social Sciences, after that, we passed to the treatment of the subject by the Brazilian historiographical currents and, mainly, by academic discussion about the presence or absence of this political phenomenon in Brazil. The subsequent procedures passed by a brief exhibit of Getulio Vargas’s birth region formation, his family origins and a short personal history.

  • Brazilian Images of the United States, 1861-1898: a Working Version of Modernity?
Brazilian images of the United States, 1861-1898: A working version of modernity? Natalia Bas University College London PhD thesis I, Natalia Bas, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Abstract For most of the nineteenth-century, the Brazilian liberal elites found in the ‘modernity’ of the European Enlightenment all that they considered best at the time. Britain and France, in particular, provided them with the paradigms of a modern civilisation. This thesis, however, challenges and complements this view by demonstrating that as early as the 1860s the United States began to emerge as a new model of civilisation in the Brazilian debate about modernisation. The general picture portrayed by the historiography of nineteenth-century Brazil is still today inclined to overlook the meaningful place that U.S. society had from as early as the 1860s in the Brazilian imagination regarding the concept of a modern society. This thesis shows how the images of the United States were a pivotal source of political and cultural inspiration for the political and intellectual elites of the second half of the nineteenth century concerned with the modernisation of Brazil. Drawing primarily on parliamentary debates, newspaper articles, diplomatic correspondence, books, student journals and textual and pictorial advertisements in newspapers, this dissertation analyses four different dimensions of the Brazilian representations of the United States. They are: the abolition of slavery, political and civil freedoms, democratic access to scientific and applied education, and democratic access to goods of consumption.

Abstract: The arrival of north-Americans Methodist missionaries, after the second half of XIX century, in Brazilian southeast becomes related with the Brazilian politics conjuncture, where the speech of progress and modernity becomes the national motto, especially after the Announcement of the Republic. The base of this study is the performance of these Methodist missionaries through the system of education of the Izabela Hendrix School, in Belo Horizonte city, constructed to be symbol of the Republic.

Getúlio Vargas, João Goulart and Fernando Collor are examples of presidents who did not finish their mandates and who suffered resistance from the press. This article argues that this history of the media in destabilization processes remains current. The hypothesis was tested from the observation of 34 editorials of Brazil's main print newspapers, during Dilma Rousseff's impeachment in 2016 and the opening of Michel Temer's investigation in 2017.

A struggle for land Reclaiming or invading land in Mato Grosso do Sul Alexander Myhre Master thesis in Culture, Environment and Sustainability Centre for Development and Environment UNIVERSITY OF OSLO January, 2018 II © Alexander Myhre 2018 A struggle for land - Reclaiming or invading land in Mato Grosso do Sul http://www.duo.uio.no/ Print: Reprosentralen, University of Oslo III Abstract There is currently a struggle about land between indigenous people and farmers in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The conflict has already caused deaths, and both sides point to the other as the instigator. This thesis attempts to study this conflict both from the point of view of the farmers and the indigenous people utilizing interviews and participant observations. By adopting an analytical framework of moral economy and structural violence I try to gain an understanding of how each side justifies their claim to the land and point to the other as the aggressor. The indigenous see themselves as legitimately reclaiming, retomando, land that is theirs, while the farmers see them as invaders that do not respect legally acquired land. IV V Acknowledgements Then I am done. I have many times during this thesis period thought about how I would go about when writing this acknowledgement chapter, and I have had nearly every idea in the book. What I have struggled the most with however has been how to express my gratitude to those having participated in this thesis: I hope most of you will read it and say “He got it right.” If it did not turn out like you wanted it to be then know that I did my best.

Abstract: This work is about the relationship between gender and religion from a study of the cultural history of the American Protestant missionary in Brazil between 1870 and 1920. The gender dynamics between American missionar- ies and the natives women occurred in different ways: in contact with native women, the missionaries had to negotiate not only relations with their beliefs, their feelings and with the male structures of power, but also with the sets of rules and restrictions in their new relations in Brazil Key words: history, gender, protestant missionarism, Brazil, XIX Century.
