Salinger is reported to have becomevery angry when questioned about autobiographical elements in the short story "For Esme : With Love and Squalor." During the conversation that followed he denied that anything he hadever written was autobiographical. On another occasion Salinger authorized the "fact" that hewas living in Westport, Connecticut, when he was actually living in Cornish, N. H.1 Years earlierwriting to Es- quire in a note accompanying "ThisSandwich Has No May- onaise" (a story in which the death of Holden Caulfieldis re- ported)Salinger himself asserted that hisown Air Corps back- ground had helped in the writing of the story. In thesame com- ment he indicated that he wished toserve in a chorus line after the War was over.2 W. J. Weatherby, writing in the Twentieth Century, quotes Salingeras having said: "It is my subversive opinion that a writer's feelings of anonymityobscurity,are the second-most valuable propertyon loan to him during his personal years." 3 t The point of all the above is that there is little from Salinger himself on his own life, particularly from 1951 onwards,or, shortly after the publication of The Catcher in the Rye.Even those comments given during the earlieryears, some of which are referred t6 above, are a mixture of half-truth and whimsey, difficult sources for the biographer. Yet,in the twentieth cen- tury, no man canescape detection altogether ;some facts emerge about even the most careful. From those about Salinger can be pieced together a small amount of data relevant to the study of The Catcher in the Rye froman autobiographical stand- point. One point must be stressed in readingall of the following: almost every assertion about Salinger's life is froma secondary source and must be regarded as such. The available factsare as rare and as puzzling as Salinger's stories. There have been several attempts but fewsuccesses in the search for facts. Perhaps the mostwidely used source is Wil- liam Maxwell's brief biography appearingin the July, 1951, I Book-of-the-Month Club News. Henry Anatole Grunwald hasa lengthly biographical section in his Sanger: A Critical and Personal Portrait, themajor por- tion of which is a reprinting of the Time andLife articles and references to the Maxwell piece. The scarcity of materialcan be most readily seen whenone realizes that even the learned critics have relied upon news magazine articles anda book club notice, sources frequently maligned in literary research. In addition to the above there is a briefpassage by Salinger himself in the First Supplement to Twentieth Century Authors.Finally, one canif diligent enoughdiscovera few more things by study- ing old issues of Esquire and Story magazirxs.These are the worthwhile sources. The attempt to relate the facts to the novelreveals little in the way of extended and extensivematerial. The simplest facts come first. Salinger and Holden were both born in New York City and spent their earlyyears there. Both attended several sec- ondary schools and left at leastone for academic reasons. Salin- ger attended the Mc Burney School when hewas thirteen, leav- ing at the end ofone year. The Mc Burney School appears by name in the novel : It is this school that Pencey Prepwas sched- uled to have a fencing meet withon the day that Holden left the foils on the subway. Related to thispoint is Grunwald's asser- tion that Salinger was atone time the manager of the fencing team in one of the schools he attended.4Salinger attended the McBurney School because of his parents'concern over his work. Holden was also placed in several schools. After the McBurney School experience,Salinger went to Val- ley Forge Military Academy in Wayne,Pennsylvania, the same state in which Pencey Prep is located.The two schools are alike in other respects. Holden speaksof the "crazy cannon" from Revolutionary War days; Jack Skow, in his Time story, noted that Valley Forge Military Academywas "heavily fortified with boxwood hedges and RevolutionaryWar cannon." 5 Holden is wryly amused by the school motto: "Since 1882 we have been molding boys into splendid, clear-thinkingyoung men." The school's pride in its motto is evident inHolden's negative attitude towards it. Both the motto itself and Holden'sattitude have prob- able counterparts. Certainly ValleyForge's motto is similar in intent : "From the embattled fields ofValley Forge went men who built America; from the trainingfields of Valley Forge go men who preserve America." 6 The 1965 Handbook of Private 'Henry A. DECEMBER, 1968 55 Schools has commercial inserts from over 150 boys schools ; only two others in addition to Valley Forge reprint their motto. There have been some attempts to find the boys who might have served as models for the characters in the novel. Skow states that some like happenings may have occurred at Valley Forge but speculates no further. Grunwald claims that a boy did run awaynot Salinger himself, who was too conventional in his revolts for thatand ended up in a West Coast mental in- stitution.

    THE CATCHER IN THE RYE CHAPTER SUMMARIES Chapters 1–2 Summary: Chapter 1 Holden Caulfield writes his story from a rest home to which he has been sent for therapy. He refuses to talk about his early life, mentioning only that his brother D. B. is a Hollywood writer. He hints that he is bitter because D. B. has sold out to Hollywood, forsaking a career in serious literature for the wealth and fame of the movies. He then begins to tell the story of his breakdown, beginning with his departure from Pencey Prep, a famous school he attended in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. Holden’s career at Pencey Prep has been marred by his refusal to apply himself, and after failing four of his five subjects—he passed only English— he has been forbidden to return to the school after the fall term. The Saturday before Christmas vacation begins, Holden stands on Thomsen Hill overlooking the football field, where Pencey plays its annual grudge match against Saxon Hall. Holden has no interest in the game and hadn’t planned to watch it at all. He is the manager of the school’s fencing team and is supposed to be in New York for a meet, but he lost the team’s equipment on the subway, forcing everyone to return early. Holden is full of contempt for the prep school, but he looks for a way to “say goodbye” to it. He fondly remembers throwing a football with friends even after it grew dark outside. Salinger © 1951 CHAPTER 1 If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, an what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them. They're quite touchy about anything like that, especially my father. They're nice and all--I'm not saying that--but they're also touchy as hell. Besides, I'm not going to tell you my whole goddam autobiography or anything. I'll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me around last Christmas just before I got pretty run-down and had to come out here and take it easy. I mean that's all I told D.B. about, and he's my brother and all. He's in Hollywood. That isn't too far from this crumby place, and he comes over and visits me practically every week end. He's going to drive me home when I go home next month maybe. He just got a Jaguar. One of those little English jobs that can do around two hundred miles an hour.

To be clear, all of us believe in rigor and in assisting our students to tap unknown strengths, but we also recognize the impact that Holden Caulfield has on students who are his same age. For freshmen, new to the experience of high school and only just entering adolescent arrogance, the subtleties of Holden’s struggle may be lost. To make Holden more accessible, we have chosen to begin this unit by focusing on the collective teen experience—weighing and discussing societal and parental expectations, peer pressure, limitations, and privileges. With this base, we then move on to introducing the idea of point-of-view. Students will transition from personally analyzing Holden’s choices in the early chapters of the novel to critiquing his behavior in the mindset of a specific role— parent, doctor, teacher, or peer.

D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1951) is one of the most widely read novels in American literature, it has usually been prohibited in academic centers across the US from its publication. While many things were taboo and banned in 1950s America, Salinger talks about them frankly through his novel. From the time of its first publication, The Catcher has been seen as a depiction of trauma for many adolescents and young readers who have observed themselves opposed to the values of America. Salinger pursues a style of romantic individualism and sees society as innately corrupt. As a “trauma fiction,” The Catcher exhibits the author’s tormented relation to the war. The present study explores the root of trauma through the protagonist of the novel. Index Terms—trauma, war, sex, 1950s America I. INTRODUCTION The Catcher in the Rye begins with the sixteen years old Holden Caulfield‘s despair departure from what might be the last in a series of schools that fail to nurture, inspire and support him, persuaded via a troublesome odyssey in New York. The story is written from the advantage of an ―adult‖ who wants to relive that earlier time through his following life time and criticizes himself for contentment and not knowing better.

Leonard Cohen, Interview (2006) 1 Few self-accounts, whether autobiography or novel, display quite so ostensibly disaffecting a take-it-or-leave-it bravura as The Catcher in the Rye. From Holden’s opening disparagement of his early childhood as “all that kind David Caulfield kind of crap” through to his last, peremptory “that’s all I’m going to tell about”,2 J.D. Salinger has his narrator sound the very model of scepticism about whether indeed we do “really want to hear about it” (3). Yet given the book’s spectacular popularity since its publication in 1951, clearly only the most obdurate of readers have proved resistant to wanting to hear about it and to Holden’s different virtuoso flights of scorn or dismay or selective approval. Yet however Holden has most come to be regarded – one of the classic isolates of modern times, the savvy but endlessly vulnerable witness to crassness and bad faith, post-war American adolescence itself – he also engages to become the catcher of his own broken self. That is, he invites a conscious, at times near conspiratorial, tryst with his reader, a reciprocal, and so redeeming, companion awareness. In giving notice, at virtually every turn, of the need to establish a usable signature in life, so he shows himself, knowingly or not, as nothing other that the author-in-waiting of The Catcher in the Rye.
