  • Paul Mccartney, 1980-1999
Paul McCartney from Wings through the 90's McCartney II Columbia FC‐36511 May 21, 1980 About ten years after recording McCartney by himself, Paul got several songs together and recorded them‐‐again alone‐‐on somewhat of a lark. Then Paul embarked on his ill‐fated 1980 tour of Japan (which resulted in his being jailed for drug possession). After returning to the safety of his own home, he was urged to release the album, and he did. The album contrasts well with McCartney, for this second production contains numerous instruments and electronic tricks that were not present on the 1970 release. Side One is particularly interesting. The solo version of "Coming Up" is followed by the fun track, "Temporary Secretary" (released as a single in England). The almost‐lament, "On the Way," is then succeeded by "Waterfalls," Paul's second (US) single from the album. "Bogey Music," from Side Two, is also a standout. John Lennon heard a song from McCartney II and thought that Paul sounded sad. When the album was released in the US, a bonus one‐sided single ‐‐ the hit version of "Coming Up"‐‐was included with the LP. This hit was enough to propel the album to the #3 position on the charts, during a time when disco was now on the wane. "Waterfalls" Columbia 1‐11335 Jul. 22, 1980 The lovely ballad about protectiveness was one of the standouts from McCartney II. After "Coming Up," it received the most airplay and the most positive response from Paul's friends. As a single, though, the song fared poorly, only reaching #83...one of Paul's worst showings to date.

  • You Preachers Are All the Same,” Said Jim, “Always Talking About Heaven Or the Coming of Christ
WE CAN HAVE PEACE Chapter 1 Two Heavens “You preachers are all the same,” said Jim, “always talking about heaven or the coming of Christ. What I want to know is, What can I do to enjoy life now?” My minister friend tried to reason with Jim, but he could not talk very long without mentioning heaven again. The boy interrupted with, “There you go, peddling your wares again.” What Jim didn’t realize is that the present loses its significance and hence its joy when there is no belief in the hereafter. The shortsighted person, whose thoughts turn inward, who is interested only in himself and the present, will be morose and unhappy. A vibrant, happy person looks to the future with a hopeful heart, which gives him present fulfillment and a bright prospect. God’s Gift of Hope A workingman understands the need of keeping alive this spark of hope. How long would he continue on the job with its monotonous routine throughout the day, if it were not for the hope of five o’clock, the cheerful greeting of his wife at the door of his home, and the happy laughter of his children’s voices in the evening hours? Hope kindles a satisfying pleasure in his heart. Men need even a wider hope than this today. Television, the radio, the newspapers - all scream out trouble, war, crime, and unrest! The immediate reaction to a telegram is goose- pimples and the query, “What’s the trouble now?” The entire human race is gripped with the deadly chill of a world filled with frustrating fears.

  • 1 Light a Candle of Hope Group Curriculum
Light a Candle of Hope Group Curriculum December 4, 2016 Sermon Passage: Luke 2:15-20 Curriculum Passage: Isaiah 9:1-7 Introduction “Hope” is one of those common words that circulates throughout different seasons of our lives. Christmas is certainly one of those seasons in which “hope” frequently graces our conversations. There is an interesting dynamic with hope, though. If we think about it, hope is always inextricably linked with desperation. The stronger our sense of desperation, the greater our awareness of and need for hope. What is more, hope lies beyond our own abilities. If we were able to solve whatever the source of desperation is according to our own faculties, hope would be replaced with discipline and application. In that sense, there could not be a better season to focus on hope than Christmas. Christmas is completely about recognizing that we are desperate for rescue from something that is both infinitely larger than us, but also intimately personal to us. Celebrating Christmas means acknowledging that we were lost in our transgressions, helpless to break free from the sin that entangles us, desperate to be freed by something far beyond ourselves. Given the depth and severity of our need, it can seem somewhat strange that the source of our hope came as a child. However, as we look at our passage this week, we see that this child’s coming was foretold seven centuries before it even happened. In fact, this child’s coming was promised all the way back in Genesis 3. Our hope in Christ has always been God’s plan for curing our desperation and replacing it with peace.
