Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. It is also possible for this ecological site to occur outside of highlighted areas if detailed soil survey has not been completed or recently updated. MLRA notes Major Land Resource Area (MLRA): 022B–Southern Cascade Mountains Site Concept – Slopes: 5 to 60 percent. Landform: Pyroclastic flow in hanging valleys. Soils: Very deep and excessively drained, soils formed in pyroclastic flows and fall deposits from the Chaos Crags. High percentage of subsurface gravels. Temp regime: Cryic. MAAT: 40 degrees F (4.4 degrees C). MAP: 71 to 119 inches (1,803 to 3,023 mm). Soil texture: Very gravelly ashy loamy coarse sand. Surface fragments: 70 to 80 percent subangular fine and medium gravel and 0 to 18 percent cobbles and stones. Vegetation: Low cover of prostrate alpine forbs such as marumleaf buckwheat (Eriogonum marifolium), dwarf alpinegold (Hulsea nana), Davidson's penstemon (Penstemon davidsonii), Nevada dustymaiden (Chaenactis nevadensis), cobwebby Indian paintbrush (Castilleja arachnoidea), and Mt. Hood pussypaws (Cistanthe umbellata var. umbellata). Associated sites F022BI124CA Upper Cryic Slopes This is a mountain hemlock-whitebark pine forest site. R022BI207CA Alpine Slopes This rangeland site is sparsely vegetated with lupine and scattered mountain hemlocks. Table 1. Chromosome numbers are given for 91 populations representing all species, including the first reports for Arnica nevadensis. Results of apomixis, vegetative reproduction, breeding studies, and artifi• cial hybridizations are given. Interrelationships of insect pollinators, leaf miners, achene feeders, and floret feeders are presented. Arnica cordifolia, the ancestral species consists largely of tetraploid populations, which are either autonomous or pseudogamous apomicts, and to a lesser degree diploid, triploid, pentaploid, and hexaploid populations. -

Welcome to the 31st Annual Wildflower Hotline brought to you by the Theodore Payne Foundation, a non-profit plant nursery, seed source, book store and education center dedicated to the preservation of wildflowers and California native plants. This a report for May 31, 2013—the last report of the season. Look for new reports starting up in March 2014. Meanwhile, keep your fingers crossed for rain and favorable temperatures for wildflower germination. A segment of the Pacific Crest Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains from Little Rock Creek Road to Three Points has a great diversity of flowering plants awaiting exploration by plant enthusiasts. Because of the dry year, the total number of these plants is low but the diversity is splendid. The winner of the sweetest little flower is the three lobe oxytheca (Sidotheca trilobata). You will see both a red paintbrush (Castilleja applegatei ssp. martinii) and a yellow paintbrush (C. plagiotoma) coloring the landscape. Challenge yourself to find everything on this checklist! There are blazing stars (Mentzelia congesta), splendid gilia, (Saltugilia splendens ssp. splendens), silver puffs (Uropappus lindleyi), scalebud (Anisocoma aculis), Mojave linanthus (Linanthus breviculus), santolina pincushion (Chaenactis santolinoides), rock buchwheat (Eriogonum saxatile), Fremont’s pincushion (Phacelia fremontii), chia (Salvia columbariae), oak violet (Viola purpurea var. quercetorum), canyon dudleya (Dudleya cymosa ssp. pumila) wallflower (Erysimum capitatum), common muilla (Muilla maritima), diamond-petaled clarkia (Clarkia rhomboidea), whispering bells, (Emmenanthe penduliflora), yellow pincushion (Chaenactis glabriuscula), white tidy tips (Layia glandulosa), ground smoke (Gayophytum diffusum), Mt. prickly phlox (Linanthus pungens), Davidson’s phacelia (Phacelia davidsonii) red-stem and narrow leaf miner’s lettuce (Claytonia parvifolia and C. -
Plant Biological Evaluation
Summary It is determined that the Monument management plan: May affect undiscovered individuals but is not likely to result in a trend toward federal listing or loss of viability for: Species Occurring in Riparian/Meadow/Aquatic Habitats: Botrychium crenulatum, Botrychium minganense, Botrychium montanum, Bruchia bolanderi, Hydrotheria venosa, Meesia triquetra, and Meesia ulignosa. Species in Drier, Upland and Forest Habitats: Astragalus shevockii, Brodiaea insignis, Calochortus westonii, Cryptantha incana, Hulsea brevifolia, Leptosiphon serrulatus, and Mimulus gracilipes. Species Associated with Rock Outcrops, Cliffs, and other Special Geologic or Soil Features: Carlquista muirii, Delphinium inopinum, Dicentra nevadensis, Dudleya cymosa ssp. costifolia, Erigeron aequifolius, Eriogonum twisselmanii, Erythronium pusaterii, Heterotheca monarchensis, Lewisia congdonii, Lewisia disepala, Monardella linoides ssp. oblonga, Oreonana purpurascens, Petrophyton caespitosum ssp. acuminatum, and Streptanthus fenestratus. Other plant species listed on the Sequoia National Forest as Forest Service sensitive do not have habitat within the Monument, and therefore will not be affected. Introduction The Monument and surrounding Sequoia National Forest provide habitat for a number of rare plant species. The Clinton proclamation states: “The great elevational range of the monument embraces a number of climatic zones, providing habitats for an extraordinary diversity of plant species and communities. The monument is rich in rare plants and is home to more than 200 plant species endemic to the southern Sierra Nevada mountain range” (2000, p. 24096). The desired condition is that lands within the Monument continue to provide a diverse range of habitats. Riparian areas, montane meadows, and late succession forest are areas of particular concern. This biological evaluation (BE) documents analysis of programmatic direction (long term goal and objective based management) rather than individual projects under the Monument management plan.
