Photo: Roger Håland Roger Håland i ii Abstract My fieldwork was conducted in Takiwasi, Centro de Rehabilitación de Toxicómanos y de Investigacíon de Medicinas Tradicionales in Tarapoto, Peru. The center combines psychotherapy with traditional medicine in treating in-patients with addiction problems to narcotic substances. The length of treatment for the patients is normally up to nine months. They also receive visitors coming to the center for a shorter period lasting from days to a few months. Most of the visitors I spoke with did not have addition problems, but often had other motives for coming to Takiwasi. Most of my informants came from Europe or The United States. I have a phenomenological perspective in this thesis, and my focus was to see how with their occidental background adhered, adapted to and experienced the treatment in Takiwasi. I also investigated how they understood and adapted to the ontology related to the treatment which is different from conventional treatment in the occidental world. The traditional medicine used in Takiwasi is plant based, where the clients and patients ingest plants often in ceremonies conducted by curanderos (shamans). Some of the plants have psychotropic properties that induce vivid visions and where the participants in the rituals experience forming bonds with spirits associated with the plants. I argue that Patients and visitors enter into a personalized relationship with some of the medical plants received in Takiwasi, and that the visions and experience the individual patients and visitors have with plants motivates them to make positive life changing steps, promoting their own health. At least the short term positive changes for some of the patients can be seen in forms of ending drug abuse and destructive behavior, increased respect for themselves, other people and nature, and an increased spiritual awareness. Panorama: This is a study of chanting as performed by a new type of healing shamans born from the mixing of Amazonian and Western practices in Peru. These new healers originate from various extractions, indigenous Amazonians, mestizos of mixed race, and foreigners, principally Europeans and North-Americans. They are known as vegetalistas and their practice is called vegetalismo due to the place they attribute to plants - or vegetal - in the working of human consciousness and healing rituals. The research for this study was conducted in the Tarapoto region, in the Peruvian highland tropical forest. It is based both on first hand information collected during a year of fieldwork and on my personal experience as a patient and as a trainee practitioner in vegetalismo during the last six years. The key idea to be discussed in this study revolves around the vegetalista understanding that the taking of plants generates a process of learning to communicate with spirits and to awaken one’s consciousness to a broader reality - both within the self and towards the outer world.

They were apotheosized for their mind-expanding powers and were thought to open realms to the world of the Gods. It was not until the first psychedelic compound was discovered in a laboratory setting a mere hundred years ago that they entered into formal scientific study. Although they were initially well-received in academic and professional circles, research into their potential was interrupted when they were made illegal. Only recently have scientists renewed the investigation of psychedelic substances, in the hope of demonstrating their potential in understanding and healing the human mind. This thesis will explore the history of psychedelics and entheogens, consider the causes behind the prohibition of their research, and outline their reintroduction into current scientific research. Psychedelic compounds have proven to be magnifiers of the mind and, under appropriate circumstances, can act as medicaments in both therapeutic and non-medical contexts. By exploring the journey of psychedelic substances from sacraments, to therapeutic aids, to dangerous drugs, and back again, this thesis will highlight what is at stake when politics and misinformation suppresses scientific research.

E-mail: Abstract: The Rondônia Natural Resources Management Project (PLANAFLORO) was a strategic program developed in partnership between the Brazilian Government and The World Bank in 1992, with the purpose of stimulating the sustainable development and protection of the Amazon in the state of Rondônia. More than a decade after the PLANAFORO program concluded, the aim of the present work is to recover and share the information from the long-abandoned plant collections made during the project’s ecological-economic zoning phase. Most of the material analyzed was sterile, but the fertile voucher specimens recovered are listed here. The material examined represents 378 species in 234 genera and 76 families of angiosperms. Some 8 genera, 68 species, 3 subspecies and 1 variety are new records for Rondônia State. It is our intention that this information will stimulate future studies and contribute to a better understanding and more effective conservation of the plant diversity in the southwestern Amazon of Brazil. Thompson, MD, Alfredo Guevara, MD, Angela Vela, MD, and Mary Frances Schottstaedt, MD Galveston, Texas, Tucson, Arizona, and Atlanta, Georgia Literature on Mexican-American folk medicine and on Mexican-American utilization of conventional medical serv­ ices suggests that folk medicine and utilization of conventional medical services are related. This study reports on interviews with 40 Mexican-American families randomly selected from the community. The results indicate that choice of conven­ tional medical care and/or folk medicine is dependent upon the symptom, that families often use both folk and conventional medicine, that they are more likely to seek medical help for anxiety than for depression, and that knowledge of folk medi­ cine is best acquired by asking about specific folk diseases. These findings have application in family practice.     EWP 6537: ENTHEOGENIC SHAMANISM 3 Units Mondays 3 - 6 pm, Room 307 Mission building Spring, 2010 Instructor: Susana Bustos, Ph.D. (510) 987-6900 – [email protected] Course Description: This course explores the fundamentals of shamanic and shamanic-oriented traditions whose practices are based on working with sacred visionary plants. While a deeper focus is placed on Amazonian ayahuasca shamanism, an overview of traditions that use peyote, sacred mushrooms, and iboga lays the foundation for a participatory inquiry and discussion of common threads in entheogenic shamanism. A variety of disciplines and approaches to the topic inform the survey of basic themes, such as the functions of visionary plants in shamanic cultures, cosmology, ritual context and the use of music, healing practices, and the integration of experiences. Cultural, philosophical, and psychological questions are addressed throughout the course, for example, shadow aspects of entheogenic shamanic practices, the ontological status of visionary experiences, and the implications of the spread of entheogenic practices into the West. This article discusses concepts and practices of healing in Brazilian religions which have in common the use of a psychoactive beverage mainly known by the names of Daime, Vegetal and Ayahuasca. These religions are elaborated from the same set of cultural traditions which nonetheless unfolds in different ways. All of them originate in the Brazilian Amazon region and in some cases, these processes expand to other parts of Brazil and abroad. We compare here the ways in which the healing is experienced and explained in these religions, emphasizing the representations concerning this beverage used in all of them. The case of these religions points to the complexity of the relation between both scientific and religious medicines. 1.
