Established in 1989, Dance Ireland is a membership-led organisation, operating on an all-Ireland basis, dedicated to the promotion of professional dance practice in Ireland. Incorporated in 1992 as a not-for-profit company with limited guarantee, the organisation has evolved into a national, umbrella resource whose core aims are the promotion of dance as a vibrant art form, the provision of support and practical resources for professional dance artists through our training and development programmes and advocacy on dance and choreography issues. Dance Ireland manages DanceHouse, a purpose-built, state-of-the-art dance rehearsal venue, located in the heart of Dublin’s north-east inner city. DanceHouse is at the heart of Dance Ireland activities, as well as being a home for professional dance artists and the wider dance community. Studios are available for hire. In addition to hosting our artistic programme of professional training and development, performances, exhibitions, special events and a fully equipped artists’ resource room, DanceHouse offers a range of evening classes to cater to the interests and needs of the general public. In 2017 we continue to see economic improvements in Ireland, North and South. Unemployment is falling, new businesses are being created and a renewed sense of confidence is establishing itself after the ravages of the Great Recession. However, we cannot afford to overlook the considerable challenges Ireland, North and South, could face, not least as a result of Brexit. Despite the progress that has been made, many sectors of society remain untouched by the recovery and many others are still feeling the wounds of such a difficult period. To help strengthen society, the Irish not-for-profit sector plays a critical role. -

Boston Irish Honors celebrate four who honor their heritage The city’s top hotelier, a pioneering leader in educa- tion, and a couple who have led the transformation of Boston’s waterfront will be the honorees at next month’s tenth annual Boston Irish Honors, the season’s premier celebration of Irish-American achievement in Massachusetts. The luncheon, convened by the Boston Irish Reporter, will see hundreds of guests gathered at Seaport Boston Hotel on Fri., Oct. 18. James M. Carmody, the vice president and general manager of Seaport Hotel & Seaport World Trade Center, will be honored for his distinguished career in hospitality and for his leadership in philanthropy. Carmody, who is the current chair of the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, serves on the board of Cathedral High School. Grace Cotter Regan is the first woman to lead Boston College High School and one of the nation’s most highly regarded leaders in Catholic education. She previously served as head of school at St. Mary’s High School in Introducing the Irish naval offshore Patrol Vessel L.É. SamuelBeckett #P61, which will be visiting Boston Lynn and as provincial assistant and executive director this month. Public visiting hours will be 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. at Charlestown Navy Yard on Fri., Oct. 4, and of advancement for the New England Province of Jesuits. Saturday, Oct 5. Plans are being made for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Deer Island Irish Memorial The daughter of the late legendary BC High football as the ship passes and leaves Boston Harbor on Oct 7. -

The invention of long- playing records in the 1950s affected how record labels, musicians, and consumers conceptualized different musical styles, and it shaped the structure of recorded music (Montgomery 3; Keightley, “Long Play” 380). The LP came to be associated with serious music of ar- tistic worth that was aimed at an adult market. In the same decade the first long-playing records of Irish traditional or folk music were issued during the first phase of the revival. Irish revivalist musicians and activists of the 1950s and 1960s had a number of broad aims that included, but were not limited to, ensuring that this music was appre- ciated as serious and artistic by a wider audience in Ireland, making high-quality recordings of the music, and presenting the music in a professional and more artistic manner. -
