  • What's Next for Ukpound Shops?
February 3, 2015 February 3, 2015 What’s Next For UK Pound Shops? Major UK pound shop chains have seen revenues surge in the post-recession years. The economic slump and the Woolworths failure paved the way for this segment’s rapid expansion of stores. With further expansion expected, we think the segment is looking increasingly crowded. Some players are now eying international markets in their bid for growth. DEBORAH WEINSWIG Executive Director–Head Global Retail & Technology Fung Business Intelligence Centre [email protected] New york: 646.839.7017 Fung Business Intelligence Centre (FBIC) publication: UK POUND SHOPS 1 Copyright © 2015 The Fung Group, All rights reserved. February 3, 2015 What’s Next For UK Pound Shops? THE POUND SHOP BOOM Variety-store retailers have proliferated rapidly in the UK, mirroring the store-expansion boom of discount grocery chains (notably Aldi and Lidl), as the low-price, no-frills formula has found particular resonance in Britain’s era of sluggish economic growth. This retail segment encompasses chains like Poundland, 99p Stores and Poundworld, which sell all of their products at fixed price points. Similar to the dollar chains Dollar General and Family Dollar in the US, everything in the pound stores sells for £1 (or 99p) and the goods are bought cheaply in bulk. The group also includes chains with more flexible pricing schemes. Those include B&M Bargains, Home Bargains and Poundstretcher. For both types of stores, the offerings are heavy on beauty and personal care, household fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) and food and beverages (particularly confectionery). Other categories typically include do-it-yourself (DIY) and automotive accessories, pet products and seasonal goods.

  • The Development of Grassroots Football in Regional Ireland: the Case of the Donegal League, 1971–1996
33 Conor Curran ‘It has almost been an underground movement’. The Development of Grassroots Football in Regional Ireland: the Case of the Donegal League, 1971–1996 Abstract This article assesses the development of association football at grassroots’ level in County Donegal, a peripheral county lying in the north-west of the Republic of Ire- land. Despite the foundation of the County Donegal Football Association in 1894, soccer organisers there were unable to develop a permanent competitive structure for the game until the late 20th century and the more ambitious teams were generally forced to affiliate with leagues in nearby Derry city. In discussing the reasons for this lack of a regular structure, this paper will also focus on the success of the Donegal League, founded in 1971, in providing a season long calendar of games. It also looks at soccer administrators’ rivalry with those of Gaelic football there, and the impact of the nationalist Gaelic Athletic Association’s ‘ban’ on its members taking part in what the organisation termed ‘foreign games’. In particular, the extent to which the removal of the ‘ban’ in 1971 helped to ease co-operation between organisers of Gaelic and Association football will be explored. Keywords: Association football; Gaelic football; Donegal; Ireland; Donegal League; Gaelic Athletic Association Introduction The nationalist Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which is today the leading sporting organisation in Ireland despite its players having to adhere to its amateur ethos, has its origins in the efforts of schoolteacher and journalist Michael Cusack, who was eager to reform Irish athletics which was dominated by elitism and poorly governed in the early 1880s.

These three pillars are the supremacy of Community Law, the effectiveness of Community Law in national courts, and state liability for breach of Community Law. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EUROPEAN COMMUNITY LAW AND NATIONAL LAW IN IRELAND Hugh O'Flaherty* INTRODUCTION Since obtaining its independence in 1921, Ireland has had two constitutions. Both constitutions were democratic and their differences related more to problems of external sovereignty vis- d-vis Great Britain than to any difference on questions of democ- racy or the rule of law. Indeed, of all the democratic states that were created in Europe after the First World War, the Irish de- mocracy alone survived the vicissitudes of the following three de- cades. Article 5 of the Irish Constitution' proclaims that Ireland is a sovereign independent democratic state. Article 6 provides that all the powers of government derive, under God, from the people.' Furthermore, the Irish Constitution provides for a Na- tional Parliament comprising a Chamber of Deputies, Dail Eire- ann, with extensive powers, 4 a Senate with minor powers of revi- sion,5 a Government, 6 and a President,7 whose powers are largely formal but whose prime duty is to act as guardian of the Consti- tution.
