  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.

  • The Effects of Collective Bargaining on Minor League Baseball Players

Broshuis* Abstract Collective bargaining has significantly altered the landscape of labor relations in organized baseball. While its impact on the life of the major league player has garnered much discussion, its impact on the majority of professional baseball players—those toiling in the minor leagues—has re- ceived scant attention. Yet an examination of every collective bargaining agreement between players and owners since the original 1968 Basic Agree- ment reveals that collective bargaining has greatly impacted minor league players, even though the Major League Baseball Players Association does not represent them. While a few of the effects of collective bargaining on the minor league player have been positive, the last two agreements have estab- lished a dangerous trend in which the Players Association consciously con- cedes an issue with negative implications for minor leaguers in order to receive something positive for major leaguers. Armed with a court-awarded antitrust exemption solidified by legisla- tion, Major League Baseball has continually and systematically exploited mi- * Prior to law school, the author played six years as a pitcher in the San Francisco Giants’ minor league system and wrote about life in the minors for The Sporting News and Baseball America. He has represented players as an agent and is a J.D. Candidate, 2013, at Saint Louis University School of Law. The author would like to thank Professor Susan A. FitzGibbon, Director, William C.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY How Winning Teams Become Championship Teams: a Baseball Team Architectural Analysis A Thesis Submitted to the University Honors Program In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Baccalaureate Degree With University Honors Department of Management By Zach Alesandrini DeKalb, Illinois May, 2007 ABSTRACT The purpose of this project was to understand why certain Major League Baseball teams are extremely successful during Major League Baseball's regular season, but often do not have that same success in the play-offs. Similarly, why do certain teams have tremendous success in the play-offs? This project analyzed the architecture of Major League Baseball teams that had success in the regular season to teams that had success in the post season. More specifically, the teams were separated into two groups: teams that were Regular Season champions and teams that were World Series champions. The teams were analyzed and compared on the basis of how they distributed their payroll and statistics within their rosters. The analysis showed that there were differences between the two groups. There were also many similarities between the two groups which proved that successful teams are built in many of the same ways. Finally, recommendations were made on how a team can build its roster to have not only a winning team, but a championship team. 11 TABLE OF CONTENTS Page LIST OF APPENDICES iii INTRODUCTION : 1 REVIEW OF LITERATURE 4 METHODS 17 RESULTS 32 DISCUSSION 43 CONCLUSIONS 49 BffiLIOGRAPHY 53 111 TABLE OF APPENDICES Page APPENDIX A - Team Rosters and Base Data 55 APPENDIX B - Individual Player Payroll Information and Distribution 70 APPENDIX C - IndividualPlayer Statistical Information and Distribution 86 Alesandrini 1 INTRODUCTION Every year, in late February, Major League Baseball (MLB) players report to their respective camps in Arizona or Florida for Spring Training.

THE MLB ALL-STAR GAME AND THE ANGELS The 2009 All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis (Photo by MLB Photos via Getty Images Sport / Jessica Foster) • Major League Baseball and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will hold the 2010 All-Star Game at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on July 13, 2010. The 2010 All-Star Game will be the 81st Midsummer Classic. • It will mark the third time that the Angels have hosted the All-Star Game, having also welcomed the Midsummer Classic in 1967 and 1989. • The 1967 All-Star Game was played on July 11th, with the National League winning the 15-inning, 2-1 contest, the longest Midsummer Classic (in both innings and time) in history. All three of the runs scored in the game came via solo homers. Philadelphia’s Dick Allen hit a long ball off A.L. starting pitcher Dean Chance in the second inning. Baltimore’s Brooks Robinson tied it up in the sixth inning with a blast against Fergie Jenkins. The game would remain scoreless until the 15th, when Cincinnati’s Tony Perez put the N.L. on top with a one-out homer – and ultimately earned himself All-Star Game Most Valuable Player honors – against Catfish Hunter, who was in his fifth inning of relief work. Tom Seaver pitched a score- less bottom of the 15th to secure the win for Don Drysdale.
