  • Castrovince | October 23Rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- the Baseball Season Ends with Someone Else Celebrating
C's the day before: Chicago, Cleveland ready By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com | @castrovince | October 23rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- The baseball season ends with someone else celebrating. That's just how it is for fans of the Indians and Cubs. And then winter begins, and, to paraphrase the great meteorologist Phil Connors from "Groundhog Day," it is cold, it is gray and it lasts the rest of your life. The city of Cleveland has had 68 of those salt-spreading, ice-chopping, snow-shoveling winters between Tribe titles, while Chicagoans with an affinity for the North Siders have all been biding their time in the wintry winds since, in all probability, well before birth. Remarkably, it's been 108 years since the Cubs were last on top of the baseball world. So if patience is a virtue, the Cubs and Tribe are as virtuous as they come. And the 2016 World Series that arrives with Monday's Media Day - - the pinch-us, we're-really-here appetizer to Tuesday's intensely anticipated Game 1 at Progressive Field -- is one pitting fan bases of shared circumstances and sentiments against each other. These are two cities, separated by just 350 miles, on the Great Lakes with no great shakes in the realm of baseball background, and that has instilled in their people a common and eventually unmet refrain of "Why not us?" But for one of them, the tide will soon turn and so, too, will the response: "Really? Us?" Yes, you. Imagine what that would feel like for Norman Rosen. He's 90 years old and wise to the patience required of Cubs fandom.

Applied Operational Management Techniques for Sabermetrics An Interactive Qualifying Project Report submitted to the faculty of the WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science by Rory Fuller ______________________ Kevin Munn ______________________ Ethan Thompson ______________________ May 28, 2005 ______________________ Brigitte Servatius, Advisor Abstract In the growing field of sabermetrics, storage and manipulation of large amounts of statistical data has become a concern. Hence, construction of a cheap and flexible database system would be a boon to the field. This paper aims to briefly introduce sabermetrics, show why it exists, and detail the reasoning behind and creation of such a database. i Acknowledgements We acknowledge first and foremost the great amount of work and inspiration put forth to this project by Pat Malloy. Working alongside us on an attached ISP, Pat’s effort and organization were critical to the success of this project. We also recognize the source of our data, Project Scoresheet from retrosheet.org. The information used here was obtained free of charge from and is copyrighted by Retrosheet. Interested parties may contact Retrosheet at 20 Sunset Rd., Newark, DE 19711. We must not forget our advisor, Professor Brigitte Servatius. The Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 1, 2017 * The Boston Globe Ben Taylor makes Red Sox’ Opening Day roster Nick Cafardo WASHINGTON — Rainy days aren’t so bad after all. While the Red Sox-Nationals exhibition game at Nationals Park was postponed Friday, the sound of the rain was like a symphony to Ben Taylor. The hard-throwing youngster who impressed with his poise and stuff throughout spring training will be the 12th pitcher on the staff when the Red Sox open against the Pirates Monday in Boston. Taylor, 24, made it because Tyler Thornburg, Drew Pomeranz, and David Price are starting the season on the disabled list. The Red Sox could have gone with a more seasoned pitcher such as Noe Ramirez, but the brass huddled during the rain delay and made the call. Taylor made the team as a nonroster invitee, which is rare. “I was very surprised,” said Taylor. “I came into camp not really expecting to make the team, but all the pieces fell into place. Perfect timing. “I’ve been feeling really good this spring. All my pitches have been working really well. I’m throwing the ball well and it paid off.” Manager John Farrell was impressed by the righthander’s 19 strikeouts over 13 innings, but more important, he said, “It was the poise and mound presence he showed as a young pitcher.” Taylor’s time with the major league team could be short-lived, depending on when Thornburg is ready, but who knows? “The hope is always to make the big league club,” Taylor said.

Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.
