Alluding to their losses, Sarah Pomeroy writes, “Fate decreed that the two youngest were to become all in all to each other.”2 Their close relationship for the remaining thirteen years, until Henry’s death in 1862, led to Sophia’s role as her brother’s sole literary executor and I am grateful to the National Endowment for the Humanities for funding the Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshop, “Concord Massachusetts: Transcendentalism & Social Action in the 19th Century,” and to the workshop sponsor, The Community College Humanities Association, for selecting me as a participant. Love of nature united Henry and Sophia, for they “were very much alike in their love of humor, happy dispositions and fond- ness for nature in all its forms.”3 As children, they had hiked with their parents and siblings, and all six family members had collected plant, rock, and insect specimens.4 As adults, Sophia Downloaded from http://direct.mit.edu/tneq/article-pdf/89/2/222/1792882/tneq_a_00529.pdf by guest on 28 September 2021 and Henry both created herbaria, compared plant findings and nature sightings, and, when each traveled, tucked botanical specimens into the lengthy and affectionate letters they ex- changed.5 Sophia exhibits the kind of excitement and scientific knowledge about natural “finds” that her brother does in an 1839 letter she wrote to Prudence Ward while teaching in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Describing a walk with her students, Sophia exclaims, “I must give vent to my ecstasies by writing you about the flowers I have found” and then lists them with their Latin names.6 Together Henry and Sophia explored na- ture by walking, taking carriage rides, and boating. Sophia also inscribed pressed leaves. One set of shagbark hickory leaflets bears her signature, the date—13 October 1868—and the place, Fair Haven, on one of the leaflets, and Henry’s poem “Fair Haven” on the other leaflets. Most impressive is a checkered game board she created for her friend Martha Bartlett, “a work of exquisite delicacy” featuring a fern specimen on each of the sixty-four squares. For other entries about Sophia’s finds see also 9:1079; 10:1304. 224 THE NEW ENGLAND QUARTERLY and described their shared experiences in the natural world, such as hearing the “booming of the snipe,” studying acorns and brown acorn grubs, and watching a magnificent silk moth unfold after dropping from its cocoon.8 As Henry indicated in words and actions, he was very particular about those with whom he would spend time. About companions, he asserts: “I know of but one or two persons with whom I can afford to Downloaded from http://direct.mit.edu/tneq/article-pdf/89/2/222/1792882/tneq_a_00529.pdf by guest on 28 September 2021 walk,” and “the wood-path and the boat are my studio, where I maintain a sacred solitude and cannot admit promiscuous company.”9 Clearly Sophia met his discriminating standards. Those who knew Henry and Sophia noted the similarities of disposition, character, and intellect that kept them close com- panions. Under an almost full “midsummer night’s moon,” he writes, “From the hill top we see a a [sic] few distant lights in farm houses down below . like Italian dwellings on the shores of Italian lakes.”16 The sensual descrip- tion of the experience suggests what Sandra Petrulionis calls “an almost Wordsworthian closeness between brother and sis- ter.”17 F. B. Sanborn suggests this comparison in his obituary of Sophia: Death confers a momentary distinction on every son and daughter of Adam.     ROLE OF EMERSON IN SHAPING THOREAU’S LITERARY CAREER N. ANKANNA Assistant Professor, Department of English, Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa (AP) INDIA Thoreau’s friendship with Emerson played a pivotal role in his life. Though Henry David Thoreau, fourteen years junior to Emerson, they would become close friends and their intimacy continued almost 25 years until his death. Emerson had already published Nature when Thoreau introduced it to Emerson. Emerson recognized his potential as a writer, although young Thoreau produced few immature poems. Without Emerson’s intellectual guidance and financial assistance Thoreau couldn’t have become one of the major writers in American Literature. Emerson influenced Thoreau towards Transcendentalism, very soon he became the most uncompromised and rugged transcendentalist. Later Emerson allowed him to construct a cabin near Walden Pond to experience and to teach the transcendental values. Emerson is the thinker Thoreau is the doer. Key Words: friendship, intellectual guidance and transcendental values . INTRODUCTION In 1837, Thoreau was introduced to Emerson and from that onwards they started meeting occasionally. Once Emerson had delivered ten lectures in Boston entitled „Human Culture,’ it was a revolutionary advice to the young minds of New England. He shared a pessimistic note on Calvinism and the Rationalism that suppressed the Unitarian thought. Emerson explained Kant's belief that man has innate knowledge to see beyond mere senses to arrive at truth, in other words to transcend it. Youth of New England was captivated by Emerson‟s message but no one tried to live up to the full extent of it except Thoreau, he took these words to heart.

Sears became interested in the Transcendentalists after acquiring land in Harvard and restoring the Fruitlands Farmhouse. Materials continued to be collected by the museum throughout the 20th century. In 2016, Fruitlands Museum became The Trustees’ 116th reservation, and these manuscript materials were relocated to the Archives & Research Center in Sharon, Massachusetts. In Harvard, the Fruitlands Museum site continues to display the objects that Sears collected. The museum features four separate collections of significant Shaker, Native American, Transcendentalist, and American art and artifacts. The property features a late 18th century farmhouse that was once home to the writer Louisa May Alcott and her family. Today it is a National Historic Landmark. The following is known about this collection’s materials: • The William Ellery Channing Papers were acquired for the Fruitlands Museum by Clara Endicott Sears. • The Elizabeth Barrett Browning Letter was purchased by Fruitlands Museum prior to 1960. • The origin of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow photograph is unknown. • The origin of the Franklin B. Sanborn photographs is unknown.

Channing's work in the cause of religion was not confined to the speculative for he was active in humanitarian reforms. Thus, after an examination of his theo­ logical principles, we shall consider the practical application of his religious convictions in his teachings pertaining to war and peace, temperance, the elevation of the poor,and slavery. Robinson School of Writing, Literature, and Film, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331, USA; [email protected] Received: 11 December 2017; Accepted: 2 January 2018; Published: 5 January 2018 Abstract: In declaring 1836 the “Annus Mirabilis” of Transcendentalism, Perry Miller captured the emerging vitality of a new religious movement, described by Convers Francis as “the spiritual philosophy.” Francis first listed George Ripley’s Discourses on the Philosophy of Religion (1836) as a sign of the new movement. Ripley’s book, strongly influenced by William Ellery Channing’s sermon “Likeness to God” (1828), captured the metamorphosis of Transcendentalism from its Unitarian theological roots, and sheds light on the Transcendentalists’ theory of religious experience. Ripley presented Transcendentalism as the purist form of Christian theology. This new religious awareness enabled a realization of the divine “inner nature,” and described a religious life dedicated to the practice of spiritual self-cultivation. This new awareness brought with it “universal love,” and a vision of what it meant to partake of divinity. Francis, a prominent Unitarian minister and a participant in the movement, had recognized the significance of the nearly simultaneous publication of several significant theological works that year.
