Washington Allston Materials - iii PREFACE This document, the fourth edition of Finding Aid for Washington Allston (1779-1843) Materials, 1798-1966 (bulk dates 1939-1949) -- as compiled by H.W.L. Dana (1881-1950), describes research papers collected by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana, a grandson of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This edition incorporates changes and corrections noted by LONG Archives Specialist Anita Israel, 2007-2012, and formatting revisions by LONG Museum Technician Kate Hanson Plass. A draft of this finding aid was issued in June 1997 and was the result of two cataloging projects carried out by the Northeast Museum Services Center during 1994 and in 1997; a second edition was issued in 1999. The third edition, issued in September 2007, reflected the addition of materials in 2007. All earlier editions are obsolete with the release of the current document. The catalogers in all phases of the project expressed their gratitude towards staff at Longfellow House – Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site for their assistance in carrying out this work, in particular, Site Manager Jim Shea and Museum Specialist Michele Clark. This document represents many hours of work recording details about the items herein described. The reader should expect a reasonable degree of human error and consequently rely on personal observation of the actual items.
