The sword called Nandakam is worshipped here as the Goddess. It seems a group of Nair diamond merchants who were belonging to Kollam of Southern Kerala were great devotees of the Goddess. The Goddess had given them her sword called Nandakam and asked them to worship the sword instead of her. Since they were opposed to the very powerful king Marthanda Verma, they were forced to run away from their native place. They migrated to the northern part of Kerala and settled down near Koilandy. They decided to call the place of their new settlement as “Kollam” in memory of their native place. They also built a temple for the sword Nandakam and called it Pisharikkavu. Local Approximately 5000 RELEVANCE- NO. OF PEOPLE (Local / National / International) PARTICIPATED EVENTS/PROGRAMS DESCRIPTION (How festival is celebrated) The eight day annual festival of the Pishakarikavu temple is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Medam (April- May). Moossadu, a sub cast of Brahmins fix the date of Kodiyettu Kodiyettu (flag hoisting) and the rite is known as 'Kaliyattam Kurikkal'. Kaliyattam Temple arts such as Thayambaka, Pachavadyam, Aarppu Vili Padhakom, Ottanthullal, Chakyarkoothu are performed Thayambaka during the festive days and on the final day, the main idol, Panchavadyam 'Nandakam Vaal' (sword) is taken out of the temple in a Ottanthullal grand procession. This ceremonial procession has around Chakyarkoothu 15 caparisoned elephants with the sword taken around atop one of them.The festival concludes with 'Kaliyattam'. Another interesting festival ritual here is ‘Aarppu Vili’ or boisterous shouting. .

PONNANI PEPPER PROJECT History Ponnani Is Popularly Known As “The Mecca of Kerala”
PONNANI PEPPER PROJECT HISTORY Ponnani is popularly known as “the Mecca of Kerala”. As an ancient harbour city, it was a major trading hub in the Malabar region, the northernmost end of the state. There are many tales that try to explain how the place got its name. According to one, the prominent Brahmin family of Azhvancherry Thambrakkal once held sway over the land. During their heydays, they offered ponnu aana [elephants made of gold] to the temples, and this gave the land the name “Ponnani”. According to another, due to trade, ponnu [gold] from the Arab lands reached India for the first time at this place, and thus caused it to be named “Ponnani”. It is believed that a place that is referred to as “Tyndis” in the Greek book titled Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is Ponnani. However historians have not been able to establish the exact location of Tyndis beyond doubt. Nor has any archaeological evidence been recovered to confirm this belief. Politically too, Ponnani had great importance in the past. The Zamorins (rulers of Calicut) considered Ponnani as their second headquarters. When Tipu Sultan invaded Kerala in 1766, Ponnani was annexed to the Mysore kingdom. Later when the British colonized the land, Ponnani came under the Bombay Province for a brief interval of time. Still later, it was annexed Malabar and was considered part of the Madras Province for one-and-a-half centuries. Until 1861, Ponnani was the headquarters of Koottanad taluk, and with the formation of the state of Kerala in 1956, it became a taluk in Palakkad district.

KERALA STATE LEGAL SERVICES AUTHORITY A COMPREHENSIVE REPORT ON PRISONS IN KERALA 2017-2018 Acknowledgment A study on the on the physical conditions and infrastructure of the of prisons in Kerala was undertaken by the Kerala State Legal Services Authority under the guidance of the Hon’ble Executive Chairman, in coordination with the DLSAs and TLSCs with support from the judicial officers, lawyers, Para Legal Volunteers, Students, staff of court and legal services institutions, officials of government departments including the jails where the teams visited. The study could not have been possible, but for the support from Smt. R. Sreelekha IPS, DG prisons, All Chair persons and Secretary of DLSAs and TLSCs, other judicial officers, lawyers, Para Legal Volunteers, Students, Staff of legal services institutions and prisons and most importantly the inmates of various prisons. I am grateful to the support provided by them. The study revealed the present conditions of the prisons in Kerala, the short falls, developments required views of the inmates etc. The issues pointed out in the report have to be dealt with urgently through consistent and sustained effort on all fronts.
