FROM THE PRESIDENT Vinnies Night Patrol Jul 3 2012 DG Visit Hello Coves Oct 12 2012 Well, after all the excitement of the Triathlon it has been a much quieter RCSC Charity Regatta week so I have turned to Twitter for inspiration and there is a lot going Nov 9 2012 on. This week is the first ever World Immunization Week, and the numbers This eBulletin has been are staggering. This month will end with 394 million children having been generated by ClubRunner club vaccinated against polio as part of this initiative. The week aims to raise communication software. Vaccination has eradicated smallpox, brought the world to the brink of eradicating polio and saves between two and three million lives every year, from a http://www.clubrunner.ca/CPrg/Bulletin/SendBulletinEmail.aspx?cid=2428 24/04/2012 Rotary Club of Sydney Cove - Club Bulletin #39 Page 2 of 6 © 2002- 12 Doxess. With only three countries left with endemic Reserved. polio, the entire world remains at risk: 150 million children are being vaccinated against polio this week in nine countries with polio outbreaks or at high risk of polio. An additional 224 million children have been or will be vaccinated by the end of the month in five other countries. John Hewko (General Secretary and CEO of Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation) and RI President Kalyan Banerjee met with Bill Clinton at the White House to discuss what Rotary and other service clubs can do in areas of economic development and skills training. Join his Facebook page for all the pictures and updates. I also read about Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan (best name ever) who was awarded the Rotary Polio Eradication Award in recognition of the his commitment to the eradication of Polio in Nigeria. As always it reminds you of the power and reach of Rotary - we are always one sausage sizzle away from changing a life forever! This week, on ANZAC Day, many Rotarians will come together to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country, not just in WW1/2 but in all wars. As we know through our work in Rotary there are many wars or conflicts going on everyday that take the lives of innocent people, people who no-one will ever hear about. It is often in these countries you will find Rotary, or at least somebody funded by Rotary, quietly working to end the cycle of poverty, war and death. So if you see a service club working a BBQ or selling drinks go and buy one. Sure, you and your waist line may not need it but on this day of national remembrance it is a good way to remember all people affected by conflict and the difference we can all make. Lest we forget Deb Homewood CHANGEOVER: JUN 22 Please Save the Date ... Rotary Club of Sydney Cove Changeover is expected to be Friday 22 June . GUEST SPEAKER: APR 27 Yalda Hakim Presenter & Video Journalist, Dateline, 9.30pm Tuesdays on SBS ONE At 28 years of age Yalda Hakim is a highly talented young journalist. Reporting for Dateline for the last three years she has delivered stories from around the world including throughout the Middle East, the United States, Africa and Europe. Hakim began hosting the program with fellow Dateline reporter Mark Davis in 2011. Hakim and Davis continue to work as video journalists while presenting Dateline, with one hosting in studio while the other is on in the field on assignment. In 2011, Hakim reported on some of the biggest news stories of the year - the refugee crisis in Tunisia as thousands fled Muammar Gaddafi's rule in neighbouring Libya; from Cairo where she interviewed a senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood on the future of Egypt; in Libya she visited Benghazi to tell the untold story of the women of the revolution; from New York and Washington as the world marked ten years since the 9/11 terror attacks; and from the capital of the world's newest nation as South Sudan celebrated its independence. She also travelled to Afghanistan where she found despair about the future from ordinary Afghans ten years into the US-led invasion, and interviewed a failed suicide bomber in one of the country's most notorious prisons. http://www.clubrunner.ca/CPrg/Bulletin/SendBulletinEmail.aspx?cid=2428 24/04/2012 Rotary Club of Sydney Cove - Club Bulletin #39 Page 3 of 6 Hakim has been a finalist for the Australian Young Journalist of the Year Award and won the United Nations Media Peace Prize for Best Australian Television News coverage in 2009. Hakim speaks five languages other than English: Farsi, Urdu, Hindi, Pashto and Dari. She's also currently learning Mandarin. Hakim's multi-lingual ability, warmth and compassion have proven to be her key assets in her work as an international correspondent. Hakim came to Australia from Afghanistan in 1983 after her father fled Kabul with his family when Russia invaded. This emotional return to Afghanistan was the subject of Yalda's Kabul, her first report for Dateline in 2008. Dateline returned to air on 21 February 2012, Tuesday nights from 9.30pm on SBS ONE. Guy Glenny DEB Our triathlete President Deb going incognito to check out the course the day before last week's event: Derek White SERGEANT: APR 27 Dear Coves A big THANK YOU to Siobhan for keeping my seat warm last week. I know you must be missing me. Siobhan mentioned to me earlier this week that a certain Cove asked her at last week's meeting where I was as they saw me on the bus coming into the city that morning. My apologies, I had an early meeting last week and my brother's wedding to attend. It feels good to be loved. I will also be away this week, but you won't see me on a bus in the Sydney CBD. Siobhan has kindly agreed to keep my seat warm for one more week. If you have any "news" or "goss" could you please share it with Siobhan either by email [email protected] or early on Friday morning. I will return next week. Sergeant Matt STREET SOCCER Homeless Street Soccer Festival A great big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out over the last 12 days. The festival went very well, and despite all the rain last Tuesday and Wednesday, everybody had a great time. In particular the 7 to 12 year old kids had a ball. http://www.clubrunner.ca/CPrg/Bulletin/SendBulletinEmail.aspx?cid=2428 24/04/2012 Rotary Club of Sydney Cove - Club Bulletin #39 Page 4 of 6 This last weekend we had the Street Soccer Nationals, with players from all States except NT. South Australia won the title but NSW put up a good fight. Playing on the floating pitch at Darling Harbour was a real experience for all the participants.
