Soil.—Uniform sandy soils: generally more than 120 cm deep; underlain by hard rock at 60-90 cm in places; reddish brown to yellowish brown sands to sandy loams, Fd, Fe, Fc (Uc5.11, 1.23, 1.21); medium acid to neutral reaction throughout. Vegetation.—Usually open-forest of Callitris columellaris with scattered Eucalyptus dealbata, or less commonly E. melanophloia, E. polycarpa, E. tessellaris, or Angophora costata; sometimes woodland of E. melanophloia or E. drepanophylla (rarely E. populnea) with lower tree layer of Callitris columellaris, sometimes with some Casuarina luehmannii or Acacia burrowii; scattered low trees or shrubs of A. longispicata, A. cunninghamii, Alphitonia excelsa, Lysicarpus angustifolius, Geijera parviflora, or Monotoca scoparia; ground cover extremely open, mainly Aristida echinata, A.jerichoensis, A. ingrata, A. muricata, or A. caput-medusae with lesser Bothriochloa decipiens, Eriachne mucronata, Enneapogon spp., and (west of Westmar) Triodia mitchellii and Neurachne mitchelliana. Relief.—Mainly undulating and rolling lowlands; slopes 1-5-4-5%. Position on Slope.—Occurs on all parts of slopes. Soil.—Deep texture-contrast soils: thick (56 cm average) sandy surface horizons over neutral to acid, mainly yellow, mottled subsoils, Dg (Dy3.42, 3.82, 3.41); minor Df (Dy3.23, Dr3.23), Dd (Dy 3.23), and De (Dy3.41). Vegetation.—Woodland of Eucalyptus populnea, or occasionally of E. melanophloia with E. dealbata often conspicuous, or (in the east) of E. drepanophylla, all with lower tree layer of Callitris columellaris sometimes with considerable Casuarina luehmannii and Acacia spp.; sometimes open-forest of Callitris columellaris with scattered eucalypts or Angophora costata; shrub layer absent or of scat- tered Eremophila mitchellii or Dodonaea spp.; ground cover sparse, variable in composition, mainly Aristida spp. {A. echinata, A. jerichoensis, A. muricata, and A, ingratd) with Cymbopogon refractus, Digitaria ammophila, Eragrostis lacunaria, and Panicum effusum. Median Rainfall.—Nov.-Apr.: 320-450 mm. May-Oct.: 150-230 mm. Material.—Moderately resistant weathered fine-grained sediments. Relief.—Undulating with some rolling; slopes 1-5-5%. Position on Slope.—On all parts of slopes. Soil.—Deep texture-contrast soils: thin sandy or loamy surface horizons over strongly alkaline to acid subsoils; mainly Da (Dr2.23, 2.13) and Dc (Dy3.22, Dbl.31); minor Db (Dy 2.23); intergrading with columnar-structured soils, De (Dr2.42), in some occurrences. Vegetation.—Predominantly woodland of Eucalyptus populnea, occasionally of E. melanophloia or E. drepanophylla, with lower tree layer, moderately dense and sometimes affected by fire, of Callitris columellaris, rarely with Casuarina luehmannii or Acacia burrowii; shrub layer of Eremophila mitchellii and Geijera parviflora or rarely Eriostemon difformis, but usually absent; ground cover very sparse, mainly Aristida spp. with Bothriochloa decipiens, Chloris acicularis, Neurachne mitchelliana, and Tripogon loliiformis. It completes the NSWVCA coverage for the Border Rivers-Gwydir and Namoi CMA areas and records plant communities in the Central West and Hunter–Central Rivers CMA areas. In total, 585 plant communities are now classified in the NSWVCA covering 11.5 of the 18 Bioregions in NSW (78% of the State). Of these 226 communities are in the NSW Western Plains and 416 are in the NSW Western Slopes. 315 plant communities are classified in the BBS, NAN and west-NET Bioregions including 267 new descriptions since Version 2 was published in 2008. Descriptions of the 315 communities are provided in a 919 page report on the DVD accompanying this paper along with updated reports on other inland NSW bioregions and nine Catchment Management Authority areas fully or partly classified in the NSWVCA to date.

    ISSN 1035-4638 ASSOCIATION OF SOCIETIES FOR GROWING AUSTRALIAN PLANTS ACACIA STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER No. 93 November 2004 Dear Members South east Qld has at last received very welcome rain. Some areas received very heavy falls indeed but the drought is far from over and forecasters are suggesting that the climate in this region is changing. As in parts of WA, our climate appears to be heading for a drier period. With the prospect of a continuing increase in population in the area, the need to conserve water is very much to the fore. Old habits diehard and brilliantly flowered, water hungry annuals are still in great demand in nurseries and green lawns are still considered the way to go. At some stage there must be a serious rethink of what is promoted for gardens. Even wet rainforest trees have been suffering in Brisbane and I know of people who have lost plants 5 to 6m tall in rainforest plots because it was assumed that the rainfall was adequate for their needs. If the future is as predicted, it will become uneconomical to keep such plants alive as the cost of water rises. My ceaseless promotion of acacias now stresses even more the drought hardiness of many species and I do have a few more listeners. After a bumper harvest last year I have not been able to collect any seed from the acacias at Booie this year. Apart from the ‘dry’ the starving wildlife has been taking its toll. Where flowers did manage to open, the branches were broken down so the flowers could be eaten and any seed that did form was also eaten.

    Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Since, however, such data are as yet inadequate, the best one can do is to provide a suitable foundation to enable a critical study of the facts. I have therefore examined and assessed all my data so as to achieve a uniform standard. The fact that these figures may be subject to considerable change in the future does not affect their usefulness. This was made clear by J. D. Hooker when he said “it is not from a consideration of specific details that such problems as those of the relationships between Floras and the origin and distribution of organic forms will ever be solved, although we must eventually look at these details for proofs of the solu- tions we propose”. The division of extra-tropical Western Australia into two distinct regions i.e. the Eremaean and the Southwest Province, has so far received most attention. Their ap- proximate boundaries were first recorded by Ferdinand von Müller. In several of his publications he refers to the importance of a line running from Shark Bay to the west side of the Great Bight, as separating the two Provinces. This line coincides, more or less , with the 30 cm isohyet which divides the arid interior from the coastal region. This line is also important from the standpoint of land settlement since it also marks the limit of the area where wheat can be successfully grown.

Wandrag _______________________________ Lincoln University, New Zealand 2012 Abstract Plant species introduced to new locations may lose their natural enemies but can also leave behind important mutualists. Here, I take a novel comparative approach to identify the potential role of mutualistic interactions in determining invasion outcomes. I examine the strength of pollination, seed dispersal and belowground symbioses with nitrogen-fixing bacteria (rhizobia) across three species that vary in invasion success in both their introduced and native range. I used species of Australian Acacia introduced to New Zealand. I hypothesised that if interactions with mutualists are important for plant invasion then species would vary in the strength of interactions with one or more of the groups of mutualists I examined, and that the pattern of variation would correlate with the degree to which they have established and spread in New Zealand.
