chapter 1 Introduction : Siting and Experiencing Divinity in Bengal-Vaishnavism background The anthropology of Hinduism has amply established that Hindus have a strong involvement with sacred geography. The Hindu sacred topography is dotted with innumerable pilgrimage places, and popu- lar Hinduism is abundant with spatial imaginings. Thus, Shiva and his partner, the mother goddess, live in the Himalayas; goddesses descend to earth as beautiful rivers; the goddess Kali’s body parts are imagined to have fallen in various sites of Hindu geography, sanctifying them as sacred centers; and yogis meditate in forests. Bengal similarly has a thriving culture of exalting sacred centers and pilgrimage places, one of the most important being the Navadvip-Mayapur sacred complex, Bengal’s greatest site of guru-centered Vaishnavite pilgrimage and devo- tional life. While one would ordinarily associate Hindu pilgrimage cen- ters with a single place, for instance, Ayodhya, Vrindavan, or Banaras, and while the anthropology of South Asian pilgrimage has largely been single-place-centered, Navadvip and Mayapur, situated on opposite banks of the river Ganga in the Nadia District of West Bengal, are both famous as the birthplace(s) of the medieval saint, Chaitanya (1486– 1533), who popularized Vaishnavism on the greatest scale in eastern India, and are thus of massive simultaneous importance to pilgrims in contemporary Bengal. For devotees, the medieval town of Navadvip represents a Vaishnava place of antique pilgrimage crammed with cen- turies-old temples and ashrams, and Mayapur, a small village rapidly 1 2 | Chapter 1 developed since the nineteenth century, contrarily represents the glossy headquarters site of ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness), India’s most famous globalized, high-profile, modern- ized guru movement. -

But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being. -

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has projected that Asia Pacific will gain a major market share of new arrivals in tourism – an additional of 331 million beginning 2010 to reach 535 million by 2030. It is noteworthy that the Southeast Asia region is anticipated to grow at a faster rate compared with the global average during this period. Given this promising landscape of tourism, it is critical that ASEAN member nations work together to strengthen the region as one tourism destination. With ASEAN members advancing, enhancing and deepening strategic partnerships with one another, the integration will certainly bring about a more attractive and dynamic tourism industry. Subsequently, these efforts will also bring the peoples of ASEAN closer and lay a firm foundation for a more peaceful, stable and prosperous region. I am confident that given our long history of friendship together, we will advance ASEAN as a special community for tourism in the region to flourish. The office is located at Slamet Riyadi 246 Street. The office location is strategic, because it is located at one of the main streets in Solo City. Mirza Ananda and Dyah Ratna Heryati are the owner of this company. Mirza Ananda is the pioneer of this business by establishing Batari Tour and Travel agencies in Makassar, South Sulawesi and Boyolali, Central Java. She started her business by building Batik Kencana Murni in Solo. Along with Mirza Ananda and Dyah Ratna Heryati are cooperated to develop their business by establishing travel agencies in Solo City named Batari Kencana Tour and Travel. There are three shifts in Batari Kencana Tour and Travel. They are morning shift, middle shift and evening shift. Morning shift starts at 8 AM until 4 PM. The most of employees work in this shift. The next shift is middle shift which starts from 10 AM to 6 PM. Vincent Jonathan Halim 130218117 IMPROVEMENT OF INDONESIAN TOURISM SECTORS TO COMPETE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Tourism is an activity that directly touches and engages the community, thus bringing various benefits to the local community and its surroundings. Even tourism is said to have an extraordinary breakthrough energy, which is able to make local people experience metamorphosis in various aspects such as environment, social value & knowledge, job opportunities & opportunities. In the last decade, Indonesia's tourism sector has continued to expand and diversify. Not surprisingly, the government hopes that the tourism sector can bring fresh air in the midst of Indonesia's increasingly slumping oil and gas (oil and gas) and non-oil and gas sectors. Meanwhile, last year, the tourism sector was estimated to be able to contribute to foreign exchange of $ 17.6 billion, an increase of 9.3% from $ 16.1 billion in 2018. This is due to the increasing number of foreign tourist arrivals (tourists). The number of foreign tourists to Indonesia nearly doubled in a decade to 15.8 million in 2018 from 6.2 million in 2008. The government needs extra hard work to ensure the contribution of the tourism sector and competitiveness in South East Asia, also to curb the decline in foreign exchange earnings amid the sluggish world economy. The contribution of the tourism sector internationally and nationally shows positive economic prospects. The role of the government in the form of regulations and policies in tourism development efforts in Indonesia's economic development plan, namely the 2015-2019 RPJMN, shows that the government is aware of the great benefits provided by the tourism sector. -

The perceived destination image of Indonesia: an assessment on travel blogs written by the industry’s top markets By Bernadeth Petriana A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Tourism Management Victoria University of Wellington 2017 1 Abstract The tourist gaze theory suggests that tourists are taught by the destination marketing organisation to know how, when, and where to look. However, the birth of travel blogs has challenged this image as they offer the public “unfiltered” information. Travel bloggers have become more powerful in influencing the decision making of potential tourists. This study employs textual and photographic content analysis to investigate the destination image of Indonesia held by the industry’s key markets; Singapore and Australia. 106 blog entries and over 1,500 pictures were content analysed, and the results suggest that overall tourists tended to have positive images of Indonesia. International tourists are still very much concentrated in the traditionally popular places such as Bali and Jakarta. Negative images of Indonesia include inadequate infrastructure, ineffective wildlife protection, and westernisation of Bali. Natural and cultural resources are proven in this thesis to be Indonesia’s top tourism products. Influenced by their cultural backgrounds, Singaporean and Australian bloggers have demonstrated a dissimilar tourist gaze. The current study also analysed the bloggers’ image of Indonesia as opposed to the image projected by the government through the national tourism brand “Wonderful Indonesia”. The results indicate a narrow gap between the two images. Implications for Indonesian tourism practitioners include stronger law enforcement to preserve local culture and natural attractions, and recognising the market’s preference to promote other destinations. -

Its traditions of ritual and reverence are linked primarily to place-to hill- tops and rock outcroppings, to the headwaters and confluences of rivers, to the pools and groves of the forests, and to the boundaries of towns and villages. In this locative form of religiousness, the place itself is the primary locus of devotion, and its traditions of ritual and pilgrimage are usually much older than any of the particular myths and deities which attach to it. In the wider Hindu tradition, these places, par- ticularly those associated with waters, are often called tirthas, and pilgrimage to these tirthas is one of the oldest and still one of the most prominent features of Indian religious life. A tZrtha is a "crossing place," a "ford," where one may cross over to the far shore of a river or to the far shore of the worlds of heaven.
