[ 2 ] SAINT CLARE of ASSISI PARISH Twenty Second Sunday in Time August 30, 2020

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Welcome to the 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time. Well, it seems things are changing in our lives month to month, week to week, and day to day. Things are so confusing for our church, our families, and in particular for our children. Should they go to school, should they stay home. Should we go to church or stay at home? The church is where we can focus for at least an hour to ask the Lord for guidance and direction of which only HE knows. This helps us to attain peace and relief, due to the compassion from the Lord. Therefore, comforting to us through, TRUST! The Sunday’s we read to, “take up your cross and follow me”. Are we ready to take up a cross and totally follow Jesus? When Jesus was walking by the boats he stopped and asked a couple of fishermen to follow Him. They dropped what they were doing left everything and followed him. It would have been good if they really knew where he was going and what they were going to do. The fishermen trusted, HIM! Today Jesus is walking to Jerusalem with his disciples and along with the ways He starts to tell them he would suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Peter could not comprehend what He was telling them and Peter says, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” Peter could not believe what he was hearing. Jesus responds, “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Are we like Peter? When our lives are tossed upside down by a death? Jesus said “Whoever wishes to come after me deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. Why not? What is standing in our way?

Peace, prayers, and trust the Lord!

Deacon Joe Garozzo

Why do we buy Mass cards? There is a long-standing tradition of buying Mass cards, or Mass offerings, in the . Giving a Mass card is a beautiful way to show a friend or loved one that they, or a deceased loved one, is being remembered in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

But why do we give Mass cards? Pope Leo XIII, in his Mirae Caritatis, explains, “The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened and increased by the sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the of saints. For the communion of saints is simply the mutual sharing of help, atonement, prayers and benefits among the faithful, those already in the heavenly fatherland, those consigned to the purifying fire, and those still making their pilgrim way here on earth. These all form one city, whose head is Christ, and whose vital principle is love. Faith teaches that although the august Sacrifice can be offered to God alone, it can nevertheless be celebrated in honor of the saints now reigning in Heaven with God, who has crowned them, to obtain their intercession for us, and also, according to apostolic tradition, to wash away the stains of those brethren who died in the Lord but without yet being wholly purified." Most often a Mass card is given to someone when loved one dies. But Masses can be offered for someone who might be experiencing some difficulty in their life, for a birthday or anniversary, or to mark some other important occasion.
