Cuba Birding Tour – March 2017
CUBA BIRDING TOUR – MARCH 2017 By Chris Lotz Cuban Tody, photographed on this tour by Jean Kirkwood www.birdingecotours.com [email protected] 2 | T R I P R E P O R T Cuba Birding Tour: March 2017 This was another fantastic Cuban birding tour with a wonderful group of participants. We found all the Cuban and regional endemics we were targeting, except for Gundlach’s Hawk, and we also saw a truly excellent number of North American migrants, such as a plethora of colorful wood warblers. The smallest bird in the world, Bee Hummingbird, numerous Cuban Trogon and Cuban Tody sightings, and brilliant views of Blue-headed Quail-Dove, Grey-fronted Quail-Dove and Key West Quail-Dove were some of the many avian highlights. A map showing the route we take on our annual set departure Cuba trip – we do Jamaica as an extension and in future years we’ll be adding other Caribbean destinations such as the Dominican Republic Day 1, 1 March 2017. Arrival in Havana All nine of us arrived early before the tour was to officially begin tomorrow. From our comfortable base near Havana airport we already started getting nicely acquainted with some of the single-island and regional endemics. There was a Cuban Emerald nest right outside the back door of the place we stayed (http://www.donaamaliacuba.com/en/place) and Red- legged Thrush was very much in evidence (as it always is throughout Cuba, even in the middle of cities). Antillean Palm Swift winged its way overhead, and Cuban Pewee showed very well and gave its characteristic call. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. Hebert3 1 Department of Biology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America, 2 Department of Entomology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., United States of America, 3 Department of Integrative Biology, Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada Abstract Background: An intense, 30-year, ongoing biodiversity inventory of Lepidoptera, together with their food plants and parasitoids, is centered on the rearing of wild-caught caterpillars in the 120,000 terrestrial hectares of dry, rain, and cloud forest of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. Since 2003, DNA barcoding of all species has aided their identification and discovery. We summarize the process and results for a large set of the species of two speciose subfamilies of ACG skipper butterflies (Hesperiidae) and emphasize the effectiveness of barcoding these species (which are often difficult and time-consuming to identify). Methodology/Principal Findings: Adults are DNA barcoded by the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, Guelph, Canada; and they are identified by correlating the resulting COI barcode information with more traditional information such as food plant, facies, genitalia, microlocation within ACG, caterpillar traits, etc. This process has found about 303 morphologically defined species of eudamine and pyrgine Hesperiidae breeding in ACG (about 25% of the ACG butterfly fauna) and another 44 units indicated by distinct barcodes (n = 9,094), which may be additional species and therefore may represent as much as a 13% increase. -
Wood Warblers Wintering in Cuba
WOOD WARBLERS YINTERING IN CUBA BY STEPHEN W. EATON ITTLE is known concerning the winter behavior of the various species of L North American wood warblers (Parulidae) which retire south of the United States in the fall. Are they sedentary or do they wander over broad geographic areas? What degree of sociality among individuals and species is present? Because of the abundance of warblers in Cuba during the winter this island is an ideal place to study these questions. From December 23, 1948 to January 3, 1949 I was on the island of Cuba with Ernest P. Edwards and George E. Grube. We stayed at the Harvard University Tropical Station which is approximately ten kilometers northeast of Cienfuegos. Habitats typical of this locality were well described by Barbour (1922:16-17). Much of the land in this area has been cleared of its native vegetation to make way for sugar cane and pasture. The areas still forested are located on limestone outcrops, alon g fresh and brackish water streams, and along fence rows. Because of the abundance of termites, fences are of live trees, principal- ly Bursura sp. and Gliricidia sp. The winter fruits of these trees and their insect fauna attract many birds. My primary objective was to study the winter habits of the Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapiZZus), Northern Water-thrush (Seiurus noveboracensis), and Louisiana Water-thrush (Se&us motacilla) . Three areas of habitat typical for these birds were chosen for study. The Ovenbird was found in upland woods; the Northern Water-thrush in and adjacent to mangroves; and the Louisiana Water-thrush along wooded fresh-water streams. -

Because of that, almost 40000 already estimates to have gone extinct over the past 600 years, only 70 have been documented, half of which were Lepidoptera [1]. The world contains roughly 18000- 20000 species of butterflies, of which most are distributed in the tropical region [2, 3]. Butterflies are a biodiversity indicator group and the redundancy of a forest or an area largely depends upon the abundance and diversity of butterflies [4]. -

Annual Survival Rates (Rain-Forest Population) In the early 1990s, the tenet that tropical birds survive much longer than their north temperate counterparts, many of which are migratory, came into question (Karr et al. 1990). Whether or not the dogma can survive, however, awaits further empirical evidence from additional studies. -

The form that occurs in the NACC area is nominate pacificus, so the current species account would remain unchanged except for the distributional statement and notes. Background: The Fork-tailed Swift Apus pacificus was until recently (e.g., Chantler 1999, 2000) considered to consist of four subspecies: pacificus, kanoi, cooki, and leuconyx. Nominate pacificus is highly migratory, breeding from Siberia south to northern China and Japan, and wintering in Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The other subspecies are either residents or short distance migrants: kanoi, which breeds from Taiwan west to SE Tibet and appears to winter as far south as southeast Asia.
