ARTIST IN RESIDENCE WELCOME TO BUNDANON

1 | Artist-in-Residence Handbook | Bundanon Trust WELCOME TO BUNDANON

Bundanon Trust is the gift of renowned artist and his family to the Australian people. In particular, he wanted other artists to experience the beauty of the Shoalhaven, and to be inspired. Our studios are the result of that generous act.

Each year around 300 extraordinary artists are energised by their experiences of our Artist-in- Residence program. At Bundanon there is space and time to create surrounded by colleagues in a setting of stunning natural beauty.

Create and share.

9 | Artist-in-Residence Handbook | Bundanon Trust WHEN YOU ARE HERE THE BUNDANON TRUST COLLECTION The Bundanon Trust’s Art Collection was included in the gift from Arthur and Yvonne Boyd to the people of Australia in March 1993. It was the culmination of considerable effort by Arthur Boyd over several years that included holding works back from sale and buying works, in particular works by his father Merric Boyd, and grandparents Emma Minnie and Arthur Merric Boyd. Sidney Nolan added to the Collection with a number of early works, and a series made in the Bundanon studio in 1981.

Ongoing development of the Bundanon Art Collection has been possible as the result of further generous gifts made by the Boyd family and others, including artists who have visited under the Bundanon Trusts artist in residence program. Contact us to discuss a donation to the Art Collection.

Artists can view by appointment the works in the Art Collection in the Oscar and Mary Ramsay Study Centre, Bundanon’s purpose-built collection storage facility. Artists are also invited to view works in the Bundanon homestead and Arthur Boyd’s studio on Sunday Open Days (see below). SUNDAY OPEN DAYS Every Sunday is Open Day at Bundanon. The property is open to the public from 10.30am to 4pm for access to the Bundanon Homestead, Arthur Boyd’s Studio and bushwalks. As a resident at Bundanon you are welcome to free entry and a guided tour of the Homestead at either 11.30am or 1.30pm. The Bundanon Shop is also open on Sundays.

10 | Artist-in-Residence Handbook | Bundanon Trust OPENING YOUR STUDIO Bundanon Trust provides experiential art programs to school and tertiary students as well as sponsored programs for disadvantaged children. As a contribution to this, we may request that you open your studio for a maximum of two sessions of no more than one hour each. You may also be asked to offer a limited number of workshops (supported by our staff). This will be discussed with you before you come and is voluntary and not a condition of your residency. SOLAR HOT WATER As part of its greening program Bundanon Trust has installed solar panels on the roofs of the artist in residence accommodation. While there is sufficient hot water for average daily needs, artists will need to be mindful of usage - if all the hot water is used in the evenings, there will not be any the next day until solar heating takes place. OTHER ARTISTS Please be considerate of other artists-in-residence and keep noise-generating activities to a reasonable level. You must not enter the studios of other artists without their permission. If you are having any communication issues with other residents please inform the Arts Programs Officer. LINEN Clean linen and towels are supplied by Bundanon Trust when you arrive. Should the linen or towels require washing during your residency, this is your responsibility. CLEANING Housekeeping A cleaning service is provided once a week, to lightly clean the kitchen and bathroom. Please make the apartment available for this service. Housekeepers are not responsible for cleaning your bedroom or studio.

Rubbish removal Each apartment has its own tidy bin. Please be responsible for emptying these bins into the large blue Skip bin (located near the artist in residence complex). Please try to recycle your paper, plastic, bottles and tins in the green recycling bins adjacent to the carpark.

End of residency All apartments and studios must be left as you found them. Ensure that all rubbish is removed, including the kitchen bins and that no food is left in the kitchen cupboards and fridges. Painting or drawing directly on to walls is not permitted unless you are prepared to re-paint the entire wall back to its original colour at your own expense.

Hazardous equipment You must inform us if you intend to use toxic chemicals or power tools. Kitchen sinks are not to be used for the disposal of pollutants. There are no provisions made for handling or disposing of heavy, toxic or dangerous materials. Occupants should be aware of the provisions of the Environment Protection Act and disposal of materials should be in accordance with the EPA.

11 | Artist-in-Residence Handbook | Bundanon Trust SAFETY PRECAUTIONS In an emergency All residents must follow the instruction of Bundanon Trust’s staff during emergencies. During such times the Trust must be made aware of all artist or guest movements.

During times of heightened risk of fire or flood we may need to evacuate the property. If this is necessary, the Trust will temporarily relocate you in reasonable accommodation until the sites can be occupied safely. If it is not safe to return within a reasonable time, you may be required to return home.

Fire Hazards You should acquaint yourself with fire evacuation procedures and, if in doubt, contact a staff member.

Please do not leave any flammable fluids or materials in common areas and ensure that any such materials are safely stored in your studio. You must not block passageways or other common areas with artworks or materials.

Campfires are not permitted.

Snakes, spiders and other stingers There are poisonous snakes, spiders, mosquitos and ticks at Bundanon. To prevent being bitten, please wear correct clothing when bushwalking and wear shoes at all times when outside.

Swimming Residents and guests are asked to not swim in the river due to the dangers posed by strong currents, speed boats and other associated hazards. Please do not swim in the lakes and ponds – the water has passed through farm land and may be contaminated.

Bushwalking If you do go bushwalking, please let someone know when and where you are going. Stay on the paths, carry a whistle and a bottle of water, wear a hat and apply sunscreen.

Please remember Bundanon is a working farm and contains hazards such as machinery, cattle, electric fencing, ponds and wombat holes.

Children If you have been given permission to bring children, you must not leave them unsupervised. You are fully responsible for the safety of the child while on the site. They are not the responsibility of Bundanon staff or other residents, and you should ensure that they do not disturb other artists. PEST MANAGEMENT Part of the care of the Bundanon Trust Collection and Heritage Precinct is to guard against possible rodent and insect activity. Please do not leave food out or garbage uncovered as it will attract rodents and other pests.

Please be mindful of rodent bait stations located around the property outside of buildings as they contain poison and should not be handled. SMOKING There is no smoking in all the accommodation, living areas and studios. Please place cigarette butts in the outside bins, not on the ground.
