Theravada, which means “Way of the Elders,” is the earliest form of institutionalized Buddhism. It’s a style based primarily on talks the Buddha gave during his forty-six years of teaching. These talks were memorized and recited (before the internet, people could still do that) until they were finally written down a few hundred years later in Sri Lanka, where Theravada still dominates – and where there is also superb surf. In the US, Theravada mostly man- ifests through the teaching of Vipassana, particularly its popular meditation technique, mindfulness, the awareness of what is hap- pening now—thoughts, feelings, sensations—without judgment or attachment. Just as surfing is larger than, say, Kelly Slater, Theravada is larger than mindfulness. It’s a vast system of ethics and philoso- phies. That said, the essence of Theravada is using mindfulness to explore the Buddha’s first teaching, the Four Noble Truths, which go something like this: 1. Life is stressful. 2. Our constant desires make it stressful. 3. Freedom is possible. 4. Glossary Abhayamudra A style of keeping hands while sitting Abhidhama The Abhidhamma Pitaka is a detailed scholastic reworking of material appearing in the Suttas, according to schematic classifications. It does not contain systematic philosophical treatises, but summaries or enumerated lists. The other two collections are the Sutta Pitaka and the Vinaya Pitaka Abhog It is the fourth part of a composition. The last movement gradually goes back to the sthayi after completion of the paraphrasing and improvisation of the composition, which can cover even three octaves in the recital of a master performer Acharya A teacher or a tutor who is the symbol of wisdom Addhayoga One of seven kinds of lodgings where monks are allowed to live. Addhayoga is a building with a roof sloping on either one side or both. It is shaped like wings of the Garuda Agganna-sutta AggannaSutta is the 27th Sutta of the Digha Nikaya collection. The Resurgence of Buddhism in Burma G. P. CHARLES Buddhism is one of the principal living religions of the world and a universal or international religion. It is claimed that there are nearly 500 million Buddhists and that they are found in all parts of the world. They are mainly found in the East, spread ing from CeyloJ). to Japan. Buddliism is practically the state religion of Thailand, Burma, Ceylon, Tibet, Laos and.Cambodia; in these countries except for Tibet, the school of Buddhism is that called the Hinayana or the philosophic Buddhism. Mahayana Buddhism, also known as the popular Buddhism, is in vogtie in Japan, China and Tibet. Lord Gautama Buddha received his spiritual enlightenment in India, 2,500 years ago. From India Buddhism spread into the Far East. The missionary character of Buddhism promoted the rapid expansion of Buddhism. Brahmanism partly absorbed and partly swept away Buddhism from India, the land of. its origin, leaving only· -a very small fraction of Buddhists in India. Yet Buddhism captured the nations of the East as no other religion has. One of the causes for the rapid expansion of Buddhism in the East is the large part played by monasticism in the Buddhist way of life. Although a large percentage of Buddhists do not practise monasticism, it must be remembered that a good Buddhist is a monk or at least one who practises the severe austerities of the monastic way of life. There are many Buddhist monasteries and monks all over South-East Asia. In Thailand and Burma almost every male member of the family wears the yellow robe, enters a monastery and lives like a monk at least for a few weeks. -

161: The Ten Pillars of Buddhism Transcription taken from the Windhorse Publications book of the same title FOREWORD As the opening passage of this book makes clear, the paper reproduced here was first delivered to a gathering of members of the Western Buddhist Order, in London, in April 1984. The occasion marked the celebration of the Order's sixteenth anniversary, and the theme of the paper was one of fundamental importance to all those present: the Ten Precepts. These Precepts are the ten ethical principles that Order members `receive' at the time of their ordination, and which they undertake subsequently to observe as a spiritually potent aspect of their everyday lives. The theme was therefore a very basic and seemingly down-to-earth one, but here, as he is wont to do, Sangharakshita demonstrated that no theme is so `basic' that it can be taken for granted. As a communication from the Enlightened mind, the various formulations and expressions of the Buddha's teaching can be turned to again and again; their freshness and relevance can never be exhausted. As he spoke, it was clear that Sangharakshita was addressing a far larger audience than that which was present at the time. The relevance of his material extended of course to those Order members, present and future, who could not be there on that occasion. But it reached out further than that, to the entire, wider `Buddhist world', and still further, to all those who, whether Buddhist or not, seek guidance and insights in their quest for ethical standards by which to live. -
