2016 ANNUAL REPORT Design provided by Movéo Cover Photo: Imperial Palace in Tokyo, with reflection of the skyline Our mission is to create and promote Japanese and American friendships. We do this through business, social, educational and cultural activities. We are the only organization in Chicago that touches all of these areas in American and Japanese relationships.

The Japan America Society of Chicago is a non-profit association made up of individuals and corporations interested in -Japan business, cultural, political and social relations. Founded in 1930 to foster mutual goodwill and friendship between the people of Japan and the United States, the Society enjoys a total membership of over 150 American and Japanese corporations and over 600 individuals throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest. The Society sponsors over 50 public affairs and cultural programs annually, including business luncheons, evening lectures, cultural events and social/networking opportunities. All members receive discounts on program registration and invitations to special member-only events. The Society also has a Young Professionals Committee that organizes various evening lectures and social outings throughout the year for members in their twenties and thirties. In addition, the Society offers over six levels of Japanese and English language courses. For membership information and other inquiries visit www.jaschicago.org or contact the Society office. LETTER FROM THE HONORARY CHAIRMAN

November 2016

Dear Friends,

With the end of the year just around the corner, we can reflect on the last 12 months. The Japan America Society of Chicago celebrated its 85th anniversary last year. In 2016, it has continued to look ahead. Its annual dinner in June featured Governor Bruce Rauner and former U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Thomas Schieffer. Its membership has increased steadily with its many events.

I am delighted that David Johnson is now leading the Society as its President, and I deeply appreciate the three Executive Vice Presidents, Ken Hennessy, Akira Koyasu and Tetsuya Terada. I applaud Chairman Emeritus Senator Adlai Stevenson, Chairman Michael Moskow, the officers and board members, as well as Mitsukuni Baba and his staff. Thank you all for your enthusiastic commitment, which I fully share.

Next year, let’s build upon the Society’s strong foundation. Let’s innovate even more for the future.

Sincerely,

Toshiyuki Iwado Consul-General of Japan in Chicago LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

November 2016

Dear Society Members,

I am delighted to report another year of important progress by The Japan America Society of Chicago. Your Society continued its tradition of outstanding programs, while building its membership rolls and broadening its financial support, all in support of its mission of promoting friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States.

The Society’s members and directors enthusiastically participated in and actively supported over 40 programs this year, covering issues in business, public affairs, culture and education. With wide ranging topics from Abenomics to the recovery in Tohoku to the ever popular Sake Tasting, our programs and events were well-received and supported. It is through these programs that we strive to further our mission of friendship between our two great countries.

We are also pleased to report continued strong membership and a number of new company sponsors. Our corporate and individual members are essential to our success. The board of directors is strongly committed to our mission, and I am deeply appreciative of their contributions to the Society. Each new class of incoming board members adds vigor to the Society and we continue to attract excellent individuals who generously share their time and talents with the Society.

We remain committed to providing our members and the public at large with a wide variety of quality programs and events. With a dedicated and energized board, sound finances, loyal members, an excellent staff and the continuous support of the Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago as well as others, we are pleased to embark on the Society’s New Year with great optimism.

Thank you to our members for your generous support and a particular thank you to our directors and governors for your service. The Society’s future is bright, and I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Michael H. Moskow Chairman LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

November 2016

Dear Society Members,

Congratulations to all members of the Japan America Society of Chicago for another outstanding year! The year ending on June 30, 2016 was our 85th year in existence, reminding us of our rich history covering many decades of service to our members. We thank you and all the friends of the Society for the great support we received again this past year. The purpose of the Japan America Society of Chicago is to promote friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States. Throughout the year, our business, public affairs, social, educational and cultural programming contributes to greater Japanese-American understanding and friendship. Your support of the Society furthers that important mission.

Programming is at the core of our activities in pursuit of our mission. Once again, we had a year of exciting and interesting programs, events and classes. Ambassador Mitsuo Sakaba and Joseph M. Young, Director for Japanese Affairs at the U.S. State Department, both speaking on different evenings about the U.S.-Japan Relations, Ichiro Sone of JETRO Chicago and Akihiro Ohyama of IRIS USA Inc., updating us on the rebuilding progress five years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, our second annual Japan Bowl where students demonstrate their knowledge of Japan, an intimate piano concert by world renown pianist Ingrid Fuzjko Hemming, and many, many Young Professionals Committee events, are just a few examples of our many excellent programs. A complete listing of this past year’s programs is included later in this annual report. We were also honored to have Governor Bruce Rauner attend our annual Anniversary Celebratory Dinner at which Ambassador J. Thomas Schieffer spoke to us on The Case for Trade Between the United States and Japan.

In addition to programs, the two other elements essential to our success are membership and development. Numerous member companies and individual members have provided direct financial support to our Society this past year, including many as event or program sponsors or annual sponsors. We thank each one of you. We also depend upon our individual and corporate members and thank you all so much. In recognition of this important support, we have listed our annual program underwriters, sponsors of individual programs, corporate members and donors in this report. We invite you to please note the organizations and individuals that have supported our Society. Their support is so vital to our Society and we are deeply grateful to them.

We also wish to specially recognize and thank some of the organizations that we work with continuously to develop, publicize and deliver our programming and other services to our members. The Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago, the Japan External Trade Organization, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and others, are great partners to the Society. On behalf of our members, we can assure these key partners that we will strive to be supportive and cooperative, and assist them wherever we can.

I think it is important to acknowledge that we have an outstanding group of directors and governors who set the direction for the Society. Many of our directors are active on committees and volunteer much of their valuable time to support our mission. We are particularly grateful to The Honorable Michael Moskow, our chairman, to The Honorable Toshiyuki Iwado, Consul-General of Japan in Chicago, our honorary chairman and to Senator Adlai Stevenson, our chairman emeritus. Their wisdom and counsel is invaluable.

And finally, the underlying key to our success comes from the incredible efforts of our Japan America Society staff. Mitsukuni Baba, our Executive Director, has been with us since 2008; Erika Kono, Director of Logistics and Administration, has been with us since 1997; and our most recent addition, Yuki Weisner, joined us in February 2016. This group quietly goes about their work, delivering great programs and service for our members, day in and day out. I personally want to thank them for their devotion and skill. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT (CONTINUED)

We are very enthusiastic about the year ahead and our opportunity to continuously improve the quality and relevance of programming that we bring to our members. We welcome your ideas and suggestions along with your support, both in your attendance and participation as well as through your financial contributions. The Society’s financial status continues to be very stable, but we do not have a significant endowment or reserve fund to draw upon — so we depend on you, our members, to continue your generous support of our Society. Our goal is to continue to deliver excellent programs and great member value in a financially responsible manner. With your help we intend to achieve that goal and look forward to a highly productive year, providing great value to our members.

Thank you again to all that have supported us so well. I am very excited about our new year and very much look forward to working with you and serving you going forward.

Sincerely,

David D. Johnson President OFFICERS & DIRECTORS 2016-17
