1A manuscript text of this sermon has survived, including a notation of when it was preached (MARC, MA 1977/597/1). A published transcription is available in Sermons, 95–106. 2A manuscript text of this sermon has survived, including a notation of being preached this time (MARC, MA 1977/597/4). A transcription is available in Sermons, 110–22. 3The manuscript of this sermon has survived (MARC, MA 1977/608/3). At the top of the text CW has written “Serm. III.” There is no date, or listing of when it was preached, but JW notes that CW preached 3–4 times in Cowes between late Oct. and Dec. 10; see JW, Journal, Nov. 20, 1735, Works, 18:140. This frequent demand helps account for the sermon being entirely an extract (mainly from Samuel Shaw). CW records reading this extract again to friends in MS Journal, Oct. 16, 1737. 4“At ten this morning I began the full service to about a dozen women whom I had got together, intending to continue it and only to read a few prayers to the men before they went to work. I also expounded the second lesson with some boldness, as I had a few times before.” 5The manuscript text of this sermon, which CW copied from JW, has survived, including a notation of its use on this date (MARC, MA 1977/608/4, flyleaf). A published transcription is available in JW, Works, 4:371–77. 6The manuscript text of this sermon in CW’s hand has survived, including notion on the front of this and later uses (MARC, MA 1977/608/2). A published transcription is available in Sermons, 123–29. 7The manuscript text of this sermon, which CW copied from JW, has survived, including a notation of use on this occasion (MARC, MA 1977/608/5). A published transcription is available in JW, Works, 4:360–70. 8“I had now so far recovered my strength, that I could again expound the lesson.” 9Expounding the lesson. 10“According to our agreement, my brother set forward for Frederica, and I took charge of Savannah in his absence. The hardest duty imposed on me was the expounding the lesson morning and evening to one hundred hearers. I was surprised at my own confidence, and acknowledged it not my own.” 11MARC, MA 1977/608/4, flyleaf; see JW, Works, 4:371. Under the old calendar the year had changed in late March. 4This is likely St. James’s Church in Aston, Oxfordshire; near Stanton Harcourt. Alternatively, if “Wickham” is High Wycombe, it could be Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire—on the way to High Wycombe. 5MARC, MA 1977/608/4, flyleaf; see JW, Works, 4:371. 6CW’s typical phonetic spelling leaves a question here. He may mean Wytham, a village 3 miles northwest of Oxford (where JW preached a month later); or he may mean High Wycombe—typically referred to simply as Wycombe, which CW repeatedly spells “Wickham” in MS Journal. 7MARC, MA 1977/608/4, flyleaf; see JW, Works, 4:371. 8MARC, MA 1977/608/4, flyleaf; see JW, Works, 4:371. 9MARC, MA 1977/608/2, front cover; see Sermons, 125. 10MARC, MA 1977/608/2, front cover; see Sermons, 125. 11CW’s manuscript copy of JW’s sermon on this text includes a notation of preaching it “near London.” See MARC, DDCW 8/13; JW, Works, 4:351. 12CW’s manuscript copy of JW’s sermon on this text includes a notation in CW’s hand of this occasion. See MARC, DDCW 8/13; JW, Works, 4:351. 13The manuscript text of this sermon, which CW copied from JW, has survived (MARC, DDCW 8/13; transcription available in JW, Works, 4:329–45.) 1In this and the following instances of this text CW was reading his brother’s sermon Salvation by Faith; see JW, Works, 1:117–130. JW preached this sermon at St. Mary’s church, Oxford, on June 11, 1738, and published it soon after (London: Hutton, 1738). 2CW says he preached on the “second lesson.” 3“I preached faith in Christ to a vast congregation with great boldness, adding much extempore.” 4CW does not identify his text in the MS Journal for this day, but he had been preaching on the assigned lessons and John 1 was assigned for this day. See the reference to those who had earlier heard his sermon on the text “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord” (John 1:23) in the MS Journal listing for July 21. 5A manuscript text of this sermon in shorthand has survived, including a register on the inside flyleaf of where CW preached it in the coming months (MARC, MA 1977/597/5). A transcription is available in Sermons, 130–51. 6MARC, MA 1977/597/5, flyleaf. 7MARC, MA 1977/597/5, flyleaf; indicates he preached twice that day. 8MARC, MA 1977/597/5, flyleaf; indicates he preached twice that day. 9CW began writing this sermon on July 31, 1738. It does not survive, but see his hymn on the passage from the same time: HSP (1739), 92–94. 10MARC, MA 1977/597/5, flyleaf. 11He expounded “the lesson.” 12MARC, MA 1977/597/5, flyleaf. 13In a letter to CW of June 29, 1762, Mary (Francis) Maddern describes this occasion: “You came up in the pulpit. I was locked in a seat or otherwise should have gone out of the church. But I thought however, I would not listen to anything you said. But when God’s will works, who shall hinder? I well remember your text was: ‘Ye serpents, ye the generation of vipers, how shall you escape the damnation of hell?’ The Lord was pleased to send every word home to my heart and I went away crying out, ‘What shall I do to be saved?’” CW was actually preaching the 2nd half of his sermon on John 3:14, but early in this half he quotes the Matt. 23:33 text. 14For a sense of the sermon, see his contemporary hymn on the text: HSP (1742), 101–3. 15Two copies of this sermon in shorthand has survived (MARC, MA 1977/597/8 a & b), with an annotation of this presentation on the flyleaf. A transcription is available in Sermons, 241–58. 16“Expounded gospel of the day”; this was Good Friday. 17For a sense of the sermon, see his contemporary hymn on the text: HSP (1740), 68–69. 22Weavers’ Hall, an old hall (since demolished) of the Weavers’ Guild in Temple Street, was a regular preaching point for Charles and . 23A park near the center of the city. 24Rose Green was “a plain on top of a high hill”, about 2 mi NE of Kingswood; cf. JW letter to James Hutton, April 1, 1739 (JW, Works, 25:628). 25For a discussion of the site of the Brick-yard, see H. J. Foster, “Some Bristol Methodist Notes,” WHS 2 (1900): 3–8. 26For a sense of the exposition, see his contemporary hymn on the text: HSP (1740), 107–10. 27This was a room recently completed in the Horsefair, near St. James’s churchyard, which was large enough to contain the societies that met at Nicholas and Baldwin streets. When it was remodeled in 1748, it became common to call it the “New Room.” That label will be used consistently in this register. 28For a sense of the exposition, see his related hymn on the text: HSP (1742), 187–89. He wrote up an extended description of Wesley’s style and content in this sermon. The manuscript survives (MARC, DDPr 1/92) and can be consulted in Wesleyan Methodist Magazine 51 (1828): 383–85. 38Ibid. “He first prayed; then expounded part of the twelfth chapter of St. John’s Gospel; then sung a hymn ; then proceeded awhile in the exposition; then sung another hymn; then prayed over more than twenty bills which were given up by the society respecting their spiritual concerns; and concluded with the usual benediction.” 39Also known as ‘Bury Field’ in Wesley’s day; Bearfield is now the northern district of Bradford- on-Avon. 40He was beginning a series. 41CW says this was his first time preaching at night in the open air. 42For a sense of the exposition, see his related hymn on the text: HSP (1742), 254–56. The words came with so great power that I seemed to be lifted off the ground, and never since have I fallen in doubts of my justification.” 22CW mentions multiple exhortations in this period on the topic of predestination. 23He was beginning a series. 24Journal letter covering June 23–27, 1740 (MARC, MA 1977/503 Box 5, file 4). 25Tom Beynon, “Extracts from the Diaries of Howell Harris,” Bathafarn 9 (1954): 33. 26For a sense of the sermon, see his contemporary hymn on the text: “Promise of ” (1741) = HSP (1742), 261–64. 1Anne (Wesley) Lambert to JW, Jan. 10, 1741 (MARC, DDWF 10/1) 2In JW’s Journal, he records that he was called by to London, where CW had been preaching, and on Jan. 22 “began expounding where my brother had left off [on Tuesday], viz. at the fourth chapter of the first Epistle of St. John. He had not preached the morning before, nor intended to do it any more” (JW, Works, 19:178–79). This helps explain why the period of Jan. 1–Mar. 31, 1741 is skipped in CW, MS Journal. CW was being briefly drawn toward the doctrine of stillness taught by the English Moravians; see also JW’s letter to CW, April 21, 1741 (JW, Works, 26:55–57)). 3JW, Journal, Works, 19:181; “My brother returned from Oxford and preached on ‘The true way of waiting for God,’ thereby dispelling at once the fears of some and the vain hopes of others, who had confidently affirmed that Mr. Charles Wesley was still already and would come to London no more.” 4Letter to JW, March 16, 1741 (MARC, DDCW 1/12). 5Letter to Lady Huntingdon, c. Mar. 1741 (MARC, MA 1977/504/2/96). 6Journal letter covering April 14–25, 1741 (MARC, MA 1977/503 Box 5, file 5). 7For a sense of the sermon, see his contemporary hymn on the text: HSP (1742), 93–94. 8For a sense of the sermon, see his contemporary hymn on the text: HSP (1742), 225–27. 9This was for Hannah Richardson’s funeral. 23This sermon portraying Christ on the cross became a standard for CW, often titled “Christ Crucified”. As the sentence suggests, it typically climaxed in Christ’s dying words to sinners. But these were not just the final words in the gospel accounts; they included the appeal of Lamentations 1:12, “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?” (which tradition had long associated with the crucifixion). Cf. CW’s descriptions of the sermon in the following entries below: Nov. 28, 1746; Sept. 1, 1747; Feb. 24, 1748; Sept. 8, 1748; and Oct. 24, 1756. See also CW’s contemporary hymns on Lam. 1:12, Hymns on God’s Everlasting Love (1741), 7–8; HSP (1742), 22–24, 26–27; and Festival Hymns (1746), 8–10. 24For a sense of the sermon, see his contemporary hymn on the text: HSP (1742), 94–96. 25For a sense of the sermon, see his contemporary hymn on the text: HSP (1742), 296–301. 26Susannah Designe, manuscript journal covering 1741–42 (MARC, DDCW 9/2), pp. 26–27; she records that in the early morning service CW spoke “powerfully” on how things impossible for humans are possible for God (so it might be the parallel text in Mark 10:27 or Luke 18:27) and “the power of God accompanied the word and many souls rejoiced in hope of deliverance from all sin.” Page 25 -- 1742 Register of Charles Wesley’s Preaching [updated April 24, 2021] Date / Day Text [or topic] Site Source 04/04/42 Eph. 5:1427 Oxford, St. Mary’s church (sermon title) 04/16/4228 not specified Bristol, New Room Susannah Designe29 07/02/42 not specified London, Foundery Francis Pugh30 09/23/42 Th Matt. 15:22–28 Newcastle upon Tyne Journal Letter31 09/23/42 Th Hosea 13:9 Swalwell Journal Letter 09/23/42 Th Luke 14:15–24 Newcastle upon Tyne, Brother Jackson’s house Journal Letter 09/24/42 F John 4 (began) Newcastle upon Tyne Journal Letter 09/24/42 F John 19:30 Tanfield Journal Letter 09/24/42 F Isa. 63 Tanfield, public house Journal Letter 09/25/42 Sa Matt. 9:1–9 Tanfield Journal Letter 09/25/42 Sa 1 John 3 Tanfield, farmer’s house Journal Letter 09/25/42 Sa 1 Cor. 6:9 Tanfield Journal Letter 09/26/42 S Ezek. 37 Newcastle upon Tyne, open air Journal Letter 09/26/42 S 1 Cor. 6:9 Newcastle upon Tyne, Sandgate32 Journal Letter 09/27/42 M John 4 (finished) Newcastle upon Tyne Journal Letter 09/27/42 M Isa. 43:25 Newcastle upon Tyne, [Sandgate]33 Journal Letter 09/27/42 M Isa. 45:22 Newcastle upon Tyne, Keelmen’s hospital Journal Letter 09/28/42 T Acts 3:19 Newcastle upon Tyne, Keelmen’s hospital Journal Letter 09/28/42 T Isa. 61:1 Newcastle upon Tyne, Newgate prison Journal Letter

27CW, A Sermon Preached on Sunday, April 4, 1742, before the University of Oxford (London: Strahan, 1742). Reproduced in Sermons, 211–24; and JW, Works, 1:142–58. See CW’s quotation and reaction to a description of the (negative) response to this sermon in MS Journal, Apr. 15, 1750. 28MS Journal skips the last three months of 1741 and all of 1742. There is only one journal letter (September 23–October 2, 1742) and few other letters to help fill in this void. Several factors likely contributing to this lacuna. Significant time in early 1742 would have been devoted to preparing the sermon he preached on April 4 at Oxford. Then, in June 1742, CW suffered the death of his close friend Robert Jones, and worked through his grief by composing an extended elegy. On July 30, 1742 he lost his mother Susanna as well. Finally, it appears that while CW continued to minister in several settings through this year, he was struggling with a debilitating health condition, as he resorted to a transcriber for his writing (as noted in the Sept. 23, 1742 journal letter). 29Susannah Designe, manuscript journal covering 1741–42 (MARC, DDCW 9/2), p. 38; she comments that on this Good Friday CW “made three such excellent discourses—I saw others wounded and sympathizing [with] the suffering of my savior.” 30Francis Pugh to Howell Harris, July 3, 1742 (National Library of Wales, Trevecka Letters, #571), published in Gomer M. Roberts (ed.), Selected Trevecka Letters, 1742–47 (Caernarvon: C.M.H.S., 1956), 28: “he gave an exhortation and called the predestinarians false deluders, telling his … hearers … if they would go to hear any others he should have no hopes of every seeing them in glory; crying, ‘We have many that said in their last words that they would venture their salvation upon this, that Christ died for all.’ ‘Come ye predestinarians,’ says he, ‘where are your witnesses? There was never a predestinatian that could venture to say so.’” 31Journal letter covering Sept. 23–Oct. 2, 1742 (MARC, DDCW 6/1). 32CW writes “Tangate,” but surely means Sandgate—an area of Newcastle outside the walls, chiefly inhabited by keelmen and other common laborers. JW had preached there on May 30. 33CW says “My audience at Tames was twice as large as before.” There is no Tames near Newcastle, and the best guess is that he is referring to Sandgate, where he preached the day before. 1For a sense of the sermon, see his related hymn on the text: HSP (1749), 2:156–58. 2CW apparently kept a brief diary outline in shorthand, which he used when preparing the longer account in the MS Journal and journal letters. One of the few examples of such shorthand diary notes that has survived is in a manuscript collection of hymns, MS Clarke (MARC, MA 1977/561), p. 219. It covers May 16 – June 27, 1743. It will be referenced in notes when it adds clarifying information. 3Journal letter covering May 17–25, 1743 (MARC, DDCW 6/3). 4The vicar was Rev. Samuel Taylor (1711–72). 5CW was preaching in a church; this was the evening lesson. 6The shorthand diary calls it “the old parks.” CW refers to it in the journal letter here as “a garden” and on May 23 as “the orchard.” Page 28 -- 1743 Register of Charles Wesley’s Preaching [updated April 24, 2021] Date / Day Text [or topic] Site Source 05/26/43Th John 5:1–15 Sheffield MS Journal; Journal Letter 05/26/43 Th Rom. 8:31–32 Sheffield MS Journal 05/27/43 F Acts 14:22 Sheffield MS Journal 05/27/43 F Luke 1:68 Barley Hall MS Journal 05/27/43 F Rom. 8:32 Birstall MS Journal 05/28/43 Sa not specified Birstall MS Journal 05/28/43 Sa not specified Birstall MS Journal 05/28/43 Sa not specified Armley MS Journal 05/29/43 S Isa. 55:1 Leeds, William Shent’s door MS Journal 05/29/43 S Acts 3:19 Leeds MS Journal 05/29/43 S Luke 14:15–24 Birstall MS Journal 05/31/43 T Rom. 8:32 Newcastle upon Tyne, the room MS Journal 06/01/43 W not specified Pelton MS Journal 06/03/43 F [Christ crucified] Newcastle upon Tyne, the room MS Journal 06/04/43 Sa Acts Newcastle upon Tyne MS Journal 06/05/43 S not specified Chowdene MS Journal 06/05/43 S John 1:29 Tanfield MS Journal 06/05/43 S 2 Cor. 5:20 Newcastle upon Tyne MS Journal 06/12/43 S not specified Newcastle upon Tyne, the room MS Journal 06/12/43 S not specified Chowdene MS Journal 06/12/43 S not specified Tanfield MS Journal 06/12/43 S Luke 14:15–24 Newcastle upon Tyne, hospital square7 MS Journal 06/14/43 T not specified Biddick MS Journal 06/15/43 W Acts 16:30 Plessy MS Journal 06/16/43 Th Hosea 13:9 Sunderland MS Journal 06/16/43 Th Acts 16:30 South Shields MS Journal 06/19/43 S John 6:678 Newcastle upon Tyne, the square MS Journal 06/19/43 S Rev. 2:25 Newcastle upon Tyne, the society MS Journal 06/19/43 S not specified Swalwell MS Journal 06/21/43 T Luke 7:41–43 Sandhutton MS Journal 06/22/43 W Rom. 8:32 Epworth, Edward Smith’s yard MS Journal 06/23/43 Th Matt. 7:7 Epworth MS Journal 06/23/43 Th Luke 14:15–24 Epworth, the cross MS Journal 06/24/43 F not specified Nottingham MS Journal 06/26/43 S not specified (8 am) Birmingham MS Journal 06/26/43 S not specified (1 pm) Birmingham MS Journal 06/26/43 S Luke 15:11–32 Birmingham MS Journal 07/03/43 S [Luke 15?]9 London, Foundery MS Journal 07/03/43 S John 8:46 London, women’s love feast MS Journal 07/06/43 W Rom. 5 London, Foundery MS Journal

10JW had recently gained a long-term lease on this chapel on West Street, near the Seven Dials, which had been opened in 1700 to serve French Protestants (Huguenots) fleeing persecution in their homeland. The chapel had later come under the control of St. Clement Dane’s parish and was rented out in support of poor widows. 11Journal letter covering July 11–29, 1743 (MARC, DDCW 6/4 – 6/9). 12Flat chalky plains about 6 miles west of , five miles south of St. Ives. 13Verine is a family name in , and “vellan” is used here to mean “mill.” Thus this may have been the name of a local mill, or a small hamlet surrounding such a mill. But no record of such has been found. 14The manuscript text of this sermon has survived in two drafts (MARC, MA 1977/597/6 & MA 1977/597/11). A transcription is available in Sermons, 270–76. 15The chapel stood on the west side of Meeting House Walk, an alley running south from Snowsfields a short distance east of Crosby Row. It had been built in 1736 by Elizabeth Ginn for the use of a Unitarian Baptist preacher, Sayer Rudd. When Rudd fell out of favor with his benefactress and congregation, the chapel was taken over by the Methodists, who occupied it for more than twenty years. 1James Erskine stressed that CW’s sermon was followed by the Lord’s Supper, as they observed every Lord’s Day at West Street Chapel; and that CW not only preached but officiated the prayers and sacrament. Erskine added that Lady Huntingdon was present and that the Lord blessed the service in a way that “appears wonderfully in vindicating Charles Wesley from the aspersions the devil stirred up vile persons to cast upon him.” James Erskine to Howell Harris, Jan. 26–30, 1745 (MARC, DDPr 1/26), p. 3. 2This chapel was built and endowed by Sir Abraham Ellison for the workmen at the copperworks founded by Abraham Elton and Gabriel Wayne in Conham. 3James Erskine heard this sermon and took exception to CW’s suggestion that those who do not agree with the doctrine of “sinless perfection” in essence “plead for sin and Satan”, to his suggestion that the Puritans did not teach sanctification, and to his implying that anyone who does not attain sinless perfection before death will not be saved. Erskine, Memorandum, April 23–25, 1745 (MARC, MA 1977/503, Box 4, file 19). 4Funeral sermon for Sister Rogers. 5Journal letter covering July 28–Aug. 12, 1745 (MARC, MA 1977/503 Box 5, file 5). 6CW had come to Bristol for the second “annual conference” of preachers in association with the Wesley brothers, held August 1–6. 7CW sprained his ankle severely on August 10. He agreed to confine himself to Fonmon Castle, to let it heal, but says he preached two times a day through September 8. When he then returned to Cardiff he became sick and could not preach for several days. Vincent Perronet was the pastor at Shoreham. 18This is the most likely time and place for the sermon on this text that Thomas Mitchell mentions in his autobiographical letter to JW, AM 3 (1780): 315. 19Rev. 1The MS Journal does not list a text. But this is a convenient place to list a sermon recorded in a manuscript volume by Samuel Roberts. Roberts dates the sermon as given in 1748 to the society in Leeds, but CW does not appear to have been in Leeds in either 1748 or 1749. Thus, this is as good of a guess as any for the date. For the text of the sermon, and more discussion, see Thomas R. Albin, “A New Sermon of the Rev. Charles Wesley as Recorded in an Early Methodist Manuscript,” Proceedings of the Charles Wesley Society 11 (2006–7), 35–45. 2Scattered in Lancashire and Yorkshire, West Riding. 3A forest area in Derbyshire, between Sheffield and Manchester. 4Good Friday: “We had sweet fellowship with Him in his sufferings; and many cried after Him, being deeply wounded by his dying love.” Page 46 -- 1747 Register of Charles Wesley’s Preaching [updated April 24, 2021] Date / Day Text [or topic] Site Source 04/19/47 S5 not specified London MS Journal 04/19/47 S not specified London, Moorfields MS Journal 04/20/47 M not specified London, Moorfields MS Journal 05/03/47 S not specified London, Foundery MS Journal 05/03/47 S not specified London, Moorfields MS Journal 05/04/47 to Bristol, preaching there often (but few specific listings) 05/20/47 W Gen. 22:18 Wick MS Journal 05/24/47 S not specified Bristol MS Journal 05/27/47W 2 Chr. 30:18–19 Bristol, Weavers’ Hall MS Journal 06/03/47 W not specified London, West Street Chapel MS Journal 06/12/47 F Isa. 40:1 London, St. Bartholomew’s church MS Journal 06/21/47 S Lam. 1:12 London, Moorfields MS Journal 06/28/47 S Luke 14:15–24 London, St. Bartholomew’s church MS Journal 06/29/47 M John 6:37 Wapping MS Journal 07/03/47 F6 2 Peter 3:12 London, West Street Chapel MS Journal 07/24/47 F Rev. 4 London MS Journal 07/26/47 S Luke 15:11–32 London MS Journal 08/02/47 S not specified London, Moorfields MS Journal 08/02/47 S not specified London, West Street Chapel MS Journal 08/03/47 M John 1:29 Reading, Mr. Richards’ school MS Journal 08/04/47 arrives in Bristol 08/09/47 S Luke 14:15–24 Bristol, the orchard7 MS Journal back to London 08/16/47 S Dan. 9:9 London, Moorfields MS Journal 08/24/47 M sets out for Wales and Ireland 08/25/47 T John 4:35–36 High Wycombe Journal letter8 08/28/47 F Isa. 1:16 Maesmynis, Wales, in street MS Journal; Journal letter 08/28/47 F not specified Maesmynis, Wales, St. David’s church MS Journal; Journal letter 08/28/47 F Luke 10:29–37 Maesmynis, Wales, in street MS Journal; Journal letter 08/28/47 F Isa. 40:1 Garth, Wales MS Journal; Journal letter 08/29/47 Sa Matt. 11:28 , Wales MS Journal; Journal letter 08/30/47 S not specified , Wales, churchyard MS Journal; Journal letter 08/30/47 S Luke 15:11–32 Builth Wells, Wales MS Journal; Journal letter 08/30/47 S Matt. 11:5 Garth, Wales MS Journal; Journal letter 08/31/47 M Luke 14:16–24 Builth Wells, Wales, churchyard MS Journal; Journal letter 08/31/47 M Luke 7:36–50 Garth, Wales MS Journal; Journal letter 09/01/47 T Lam. 1:12 Maesmynis, Wales, St. David’s church MS Journal; Journal letter 09/01/47 T Lam. 1:12 Builth Wells, Wales MS Journal; Journal letter 09/01/47 T Acts 3:26 Garth, Wales MS Journal; Journal letter 09/02/47 W John 10:10 Garth, Wales MS Journal; Journal letter

His MS Journal makes clear that he was disinclined to preach much through this time of struggle. 18Letter to Sarah (Gwynne) Wesley, Oct. 12, 1749 (current location unknown; once at United Theological College, Sydney, Australia). NOTE: His 1751 preaching tour convinced CW that he could not balance family responsibilities with such extended yearly excursions. From this point, he stayed closer to home, mainly going to London to provide oversight when JW was on the road. After CW’s family moved to London in 1771, he made occasional similar trips back to Bristol. On a few occasions (like late 1756) JW persuaded CW to travel a bit more broadly, and some journal letters survive from these trips. Otherwise, our sources are limited largely to occasional letters that CW wrote to his family when he was away from home, and some scattered second-hand reporters like the Bristol .

1Letter to Sarah (Gwynne) Wesley, October 4, 1752 (MARC, DDCW 7/99). 2Manuscript diary of a person—possibly Nicolas Norton—working as book steward in Bristol, 1752–54 (Duke University, Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Frank Baker Papers, Box SF9), see p. 100. An transcription is available on the CSWT website: http://www.divinity.duke.edu/sites/default/files/documents/cswt/Bristol_Steward_Diary.pdf 3Bristol steward diary, 101–3. “Mr Wesley was exceeding lively. His subject was, ‘The whole creation groaneth and traveleth in pain, waiting for the manifestation of the Sons of GOD. He first observed that the whole creation by the fall of man was is corrupted. Secondly, that it groaneth and waiteth in expectation of deliverance. Third, that it shall regain its primitive beauty, its original splendour, by the creation of the new heavens and earth: or the recreating these again.” 4Bristol steward diary, 116. 5Bristol steward diary, 118. 6Bristol steward diary, 120. 1Bristol steward diary, 151. 2Letter to Sarah (Gwynne) Wesley, April 16, 1753 (MARC, DDCW 5/72). 3Dyer records, “Mr. Charles Wesley read prayers and preached in the forenoon at the Room in the Horsefair, there being no service at St. James Church. It is said this is to be continued every Sunday during the time this Church is shut up.” See WHS 18 (1932): 123. 4Letter to Sarah (Gwynne) Wesley, September 21, 1753 (MARC, DDWes 4/94). 5Letter to Sarah (Gwynne) Wesley, Sept. 30–Oct. 1, 1753 (MARC, DDCW 7/98). 6“At Kingswood School or Chapel … heard Mr. Charles Wesley preach, who afterwards administered the Sacrament.” See WHS 18 (1932): 123. 7Journal letter covering Nov. 29 – Dec. 11, 1753 (MARC, DDCW 8/4). This was likely the sermon that Mary (Duncan) Mather heard, wherein CW “described the whole process of the work of God in the soul”; see AM 3 (1780): 98. The journal is anonymous, but obviously from Bath, and covers January–August 1769. It has been conclusively identified as that of Thomas Parsons, a Bath stonecarver. He was the son of the founding minister of the Bath [Particular] Baptist congregation. For February 19 it reads: “went and heard Charles Wesley from Isaiah.” 7Ibid. “Went with my friend to the Countess’s chapel, heard Charles Wesley from 8 Heb 10–11 but it is absolutely impossible to give any tolerable account of his sermon which was one of the worst I ever heard. I don’t believe he thought before he mounted the throne.” 8CW preached and baptized Ephraim and Ancona Robin. See WHS 18 (1932): 124. 9JW opened this new chapel on City Road on November 1, 1778. 10Letter to JW, June 16, 1779, Arminian Magazine 12 (1789): 441–42. 11Letter to JW, November 28, 1779 (Bristol, Wesley College, D6/1/164). 1Letter to JW, June 4–6, 1780 (MARC, DDWes 4/48). “I prayed with the preachers at the Chapel and charged them to keep the peace. I preached peace and charity, the one true religion; and prayed earnestly for the trembling persecuted Catholics. Never have I found such love for them as on this occasion, and I believe most of the society are like-minded.” On June 2, 1780, George Gordon led nearly 60,000 persons to petition Parliament to repeal the Catholic Relief Act of 1778, which had permitted Roman Catholics to purchase and inherit land. 2Letter to Sarah (Gwynne) Wesley, August 23, 1780 (MARC, DDWes 4/9). 3Letter to Sarah (Gwynne) Wesley, September 7, 1780 (Duke University, Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Frank Baker Wesleyana Collection, Box WF 2). 4Letter to CW Jr., August 30–September 1, 1782 (MARC, DDCW 7/37). 5Letter to John and Mary Fletcher, May 21, 1785 (London, Wesley’s Chapel museum).
