  • St. Thomas the Apostle and Our Call to Faith
INM-KMJ-CIR 17/07-2018 JULY 2018 St. Thomas the Apostle and our Call to Faith My dear Confreres, Affectionate greetings from the Provincial House! We have just celebrated the feast of the Apostle Thomas, patron of our Province. The feast gives us an opportunity to make a reflection on the figure and character of the apostle, who not only brought the faith to our land twenty centuries ago, but also shed his blood in defence of it in this very city which is rightly known as the city of St. Thomas (San Thome). It is in Chennai that St Thomas spent his last years; here he lived, here he worked, and here he evangelized. We are privileged to have him as the patron of our Province. Among all the apostles, Thomas is the only one who dared to cross the frontiers of the ancient Roman Empire for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus. His hallowed tomb in the beautiful crypt of San Thome Cathedral basilica is a constant reminder to us of Chennai’s and our Province’s apostolic link. St. John Chrysostom, as early as the 4th century, said of Thomas’s mission in India that while “he would hardly venture to go with Jesus as far as the neighbouring town of Bethany, after the Pentecost, he would travel without Him to implant the Faith in faraway India where, even to this day, the faithful call themselves St. Thomas Christians.” Though St. Thomas appears in the Gospel of Matthew (10:3), Mark (3:18), and Luke (6:15) and the Acts (1:13), it is in the Gospel of John that his personality comes to its full stature.

  • SONS and DAUGHTERS of the LIGHT a Pastoral Plan for Ministry with Young Adults November 12, 1996, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE LIGHT A Pastoral Plan for Ministry with Young Adults November 12, 1996, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. DEDICATION We dedicate this vision and pastoral plan to Catholic young adults--men and women in their late teens, twenties and thirties. We do so because we realize the tremendous gifts which they bring to church life. As single people or married couples, with or without children, their presence enriches our society and our Church. We hope this plan will be an effective tool to connect young adults with Jesus Christ and his challenge to bring the Gospel -- with its message of hope -- to society. PREFACE: A MESSAGE TO YOUNG ADULTS Dear Brothers and Sisters, As we began to write this pastoral plan we chose first to meet with some of you. These meetings, where you shared the joys and struggles of your daily life, have been a time of grace and understanding for us. We applaud your desire to belong to a community that shares similar convictions and to learn more about sacred Scripture, tradition and the teachings of the Church. We acknowledge the pain many of you speak of in feeling unwelcome and alone—strangers in the house of God. For any failure to extend hospitality, we apologize and promise greater efforts to welcome you into church life. We hope that anyone who enters a catholic church for mass, or at any other time, will feel comfortable and welcome. We also acknowledge that some of you recently have joined the Church. We welcome you. Others of you may be tempted to leave.

Issue 34 Christmas 2017 St. Michael’s Parish Newsletter A welcoming Eucharistic community, sharing Faith and reaching out to all... “She gave birth to her first born son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.” Luke 2:7 My Brothers and Sisters, He is never mentioned in Luke’s story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, but he is the linchpin of the whole Christmas story. Were it not for him, Jesus would not have been born in a poor stable. The innkeeper who presumably refused a room to Joseph and Mary forced them to find shelter in a shepherd’s cave. All Luke says is that “there was no room for them in the inn.” Almost every Christmas pageant includes the innkeeper. He is often portrayed as a gruff old man who cannot be bothered with a poor carpenter and a young bride. Sometimes he is a busy host, overcome with the demands of running an inn, during this busy time caused by Herod, who called for a census to be taken. Once in a while the innkeeper is a compassionate soul who has sympathy for Mary and Joseph and offers them hospitality, even if it is meager. I prefer to think of the innkeeper as truly kind, who just faces a challenge with love and concern. continued on page 2... • Guidelines for Ministry to & with Young People
GUIDELINES FOR MINISTRY TO & WITH YOUNG PEOPLE Ministry to and with young people in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is firmly based on the United States Catholic Conference of Bishop’s document Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry which was published in 1997. It is the understanding in this Archdiocese that youth ministry includes all ministries to and with young people. The guidelines below entail three areas of ministry: Youth Ministry with Young Adolescents (Jr. High), Youth Ministry with Older Adolescents (High School), and the Confirmation Preparation Process. GUIDELINES FOR YOUTH MINISTRY WITH YOUNG ADOLESCENTS (JR. HIGH) PHILOSOPHY “Significant physical and emotional changes characterize the period of pre-adolescence and adolescence. While home and family remain the more powerful forces in the development of pre-adolescents and adolescents, their peer groups begin to exercise increasing influence on attitudes, values, and behavior. They learn to live the Christian faith by observing the good example of others whom they admire and trust.” (National Directory for Catechesis, 48 D) Adolescence is one of the most fascinating and frustrating transitions in the life span, during which the accelerated rate of change and growth is second only to infancy. It is a time of expanding horizons, self discovery, and emerging independence. In young adolescence the transformation from childhood to adulthood begins with the onset of biological, physical, behavioral, and social transformation. The spiritual development of young adolescents occurs not separate from, but as part of this transformational process. Young adolescence is a critical point in life’s trajectory. This period provides an optimal time for intervention to prevent destructive life patterns, and promote continuing healthy habits.

CHRISTIANITY IN MODERN CHINA People, Communities, and the Catholic Church in China Edited by Cindy Yik-yi Chu Paul P. Mariani Christianity in Modern China Series Editor Cindy Yik-yi Chu Department of History Hong Kong Baptist University Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong This series addresses Christianity in China from the time of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties to the present. It includes a number of disciplines—history, political science, theology, religious studies, gen- der studies and sociology. Not only is the series inter-disciplinary, it also encourages inter-religious dialogue. It covers the presence of the Catholic Church, the Protestant Churches and the Orthodox Church in China. While Chinese Protestant Churches have attracted much scholarly and journalistic attention, there is much unknown about the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church in China. There is an enor- mous demand for monographs on the Chinese Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. This series captures the breathtaking phenomenon of the rapid expansion of Chinese Christianity on the one hand, and the long awaited need to reveal the reality and the development of Chinese Catholicism and the Orthodox religion on the other. Christianity in China refects on the tremendous importance of Chinese-foreign relations. The series touches on many levels of research—the life of a single Christian in a village, a city parish, the conficts between converts in a province, the policy of the provincial authority and state-to-state relations. It concerns the infuence of dif- ferent cultures on Chinese soil—the American, the French, the Italian, the Portuguese and so on.

  • The Need for Catholic High School Youth Ministry
THE NEED FOR CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY In 1997 the Catholic Bishops of the United States created the document Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry. A wake- up call to the Church, this important youth ministry document spelled out clearly the need for Catholic youth ministry in the Church today. “What is needed today is a church, which knows how to respond to the expectations of young people. Jesus wants to enter into dialogue with them and, through his body, which is the church, to propose the possibility of a choice, which will require a commitment of their lives. As Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus, so the church must become the traveling companion of young people...” - Pope St. John Paul II, World Youth Day 1995, Philippines With then Pope John Paul II words echoing in the ears of the young Church and the United States Bishops, Renewing the Vision built a strong framework of goals for ministry with adolescents. Goal 1: To empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today. Goal 2: To draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community. Goal 3: To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person. To accomplish these goals, the entire Catholic community must unite to minister to and empower the young Church to be Disciples of Christ. Life Teen recognizes the need for “relational” ministry and “catechetical” resources; we recognize the need for comprehensive Catholic youth ministry beginning in middle school and advancing to high school.

  • 1 AMORIS LAETITIA and the NATURE of MERCY +Charles J
1 AMORIS LAETITIA AND THE NATURE OF MERCY +Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. National Assembly of Filipino Priests USA Houston, 11.8.17 Last month the Wall Street Journal covered the fighting around the Philippine city of Marawi. The story was riveting, and I was struck by the violence of the Muslim militants who had seized the city. It reminded me of how many hardships Filipinos have faced over the 73 years of my lifetime. Japanese occupation, the Huk insurgency, the NPA insurgency, dictatorship, corruption, martial law, and now Islamic extremism. The list of sufferings is a long one. But as I read about Marawi, I also recalled the 4 million people who jammed the streets of Manila for John Paul II at World Youth Day 1995. Despite their hardships, Filipinos have always been a people of joy, enthusiasm for life, and deep Catholic faith. Those same qualities have always marked Filipinos in the United States. The Filipino community in Philadelphia is a great blessing for our local Church. So it’s a particular pleasure to be here. My job today is to talk about Amoris Laetitia. Papal documents are always important. But – if we can be candid for a moment -- some have the energy of a lead brick. Amoris Laetitia is very different. It has passages of great wisdom and beauty on marriage and on family life. And it has other passages that have caused some obvious controversy. The controversy has obscured much of the good in the document. So we need to engage the text with open hearts and the discipline of clear thinking.
