Measurements 17.5 x 25cm (PL), framed measurements 40 x 46.3cm Note- The Spotted Sow appears in Meyrick R. & Heuser, H., 2017, Charles Tunnicliffe Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne, Royal Academy of Arts, London, number 52, page 82 17.5 x 25cm Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe R.A. OBE (1901-1979) was an internationally celebrated wildlife artist. He was born in Macclesfield and spent much of his early life working on his family's farm before attending the Macclesfield School of Art, winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London shortly after. Following the completion of his studies he relocated to Anglesea in 1947 where he remained for the rest of his life. His used a variety of mediums in his work inlcuding watercolour, etching, engraving and oil. Tunnicliffe is recognised for his accurate and naturalistic portrayal of animals and birds and the lively way he represented his subjects engaging with their surrounding habitats. He was a regular exhibitor with the Royal Academy, but released very few of his works for gallery sale, believing his art was best suited to private homes. He was well known as a book illustrator, particularly his work for Ladybird books, and he had a long relationship with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for whom he illustrated many magazine covers and who awarded him a Gold Medal for his service in 1978. Tunnicliffe rejected the modern urban art scene of his time in favour of immersing himself within the natural world, insisting upon painting studies direct from nature. He was renowned for his decorative watercolours of birds that he exhibited annually at the Royal Academy of Arts. Today, Tunnicliffe is less widely known as a printmaker. He came to prominence as an etcher in the late 1920s. It was as a printmaker member he was elected Royal Academician. For most of his subjects, Tunnicliffe drew on his experience of growing up and working on a farm near Macclesfield in Cheshire. A scholarship made it possible for him to study at the Royal College of Art in London yet the city never featured in his work.

Signature: …………………………………………………Peter John Bunten. Abstract The nature writings of Henry Williamson deserve revaluation. The qualities of Williamson’s work have never been fully acknowledged, in part because of the disproportionate attention given to the flawed and uneven novel sequence A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight (1951–1969). His controversial involvement with extreme right-wing politics has also adversely affected his reputation. This thesis will suggest that Williamson’s nature writings, in particular his animal biographies – Tarka the Otter (1927), Salar the Salmon (1935) and The Phasian Bird (1948) – represent his greatest literary achievement, and that these three major works merit a prominent place in any critical survey of the development of the twentieth-century English novel. Williamson’s use of the novel form to represent the lives of animals involves the complex task of conveying the experience and consciousness of non-human subjects. The degree to which this necessarily leads to an anthropomorphic approach will be addressed. In addition, it will be argued that his writings represent an early, and often ground-breaking, example of how narrative fiction can draw attention to environmental issues.

He studied Environmental Science in the 1970s, specialising in wildlife conservation, and lectured in this field for 20 years before becoming a full-time wildlife photographer. He has numerous international photographic awards to his credit. In this country we have a long and wildlife friendly coastline, which includes the rocky seabird studded west coast, the sheer chalk cliffs of Yorkshire, which are packed with breeding seabirds in spring and summer, and some of the finest bird estuaries globally. Add to this the myriad of amazing islands around Scotland and you have the recipe for a fantastic wildlife journey. Gallery Guide Spring 2010 Edmund Blampied (Jersey 1886-1966) A Jersey Vraic Cart Etching Permanent Collection Fund 1981.06.10 Edmund Blampied was born on the isle of Jersey located in the English Channel off the French coast. His artistic talent was recognized at an early age and at 16 he traveled to England to get a formal art edu-cation. He worked primarily as an illustrator for books, newspapers and magazines, but exhibited frequently in galleries and was awarded membership to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1920 and the Royal Society of British Artists in 1938. Blampied's 1939 illustrated edition of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan is probably his best known work. In 1940, despite the threat of war, Blampied moved back to Jersey with his wife, who was Jewish. After the occupation of Jersey by German forces, they were held there until liberation on May 9, 1945, nearly a year after the allied invasion of France. A Jersey Vraic Cart was executed just before the occupation of the island and was issued by the Cleveland Museum of Art to promote a scheduled exhibition of his work in 1941. It shows a scene common to the island - a horse drawn cart used for collecting seaweed (vraic) to be used to fertilize the fields of island farms. After the war, Edmund Blampied and his wife lived out the remaining decades of their lives on Jersey.
