We hope this one, with many new purchases, finds you well. Part two of our ‘Plant Hunting’ books feature in this catalogue and our section focussing on ‘Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace’ contains some very interesting works, many in excellent condition. Books by Darwin and Wallace are proving very much in demand. ‘Saltmarsh’ is the latest (5th) title in the British Wildlife Publishing series and we expect it will be very well received (Item 700). We have three of the other titles in the series in stock (Items 721, 726 & 731). Two New Naturalist titles have been published since Catalogue 112, namely, ‘Early Humans’ and ‘Farming and Birds’ (Items 506 & 507 in this catalogue). ‘Beetles’ is next, planned for January 2018. In Twelve Books: And His book Concerning Trees. 1st. Eng. Ed. Pub. A. Millar 1745 pp.xiv, 600 plus index. Intermittent foxing. Hinges neatly repaired. Red sprinkle decoration to fore-edges of text block. More recent quarter calf spine added to contemporary boards showing some rubbing. With contemporary armorial bookplate of Thomas Boswall Esq. of Blackadder and with ‘W. Phorson’s Circulating Library’ label (c.1800) to front paste-down. Contents very clean, with a little scattered foxing. Overall a vg. copy. (Harding 98). [46415] £800.00 Columella is considered the most important writer on agriculture of the Roman Empire. ‘Of Husbandry’ is a fascinating work with chapters dedicated to beekeeping, the husbandry of land, vines, livestock, poultry and fruit growing. ‘Columella, a Spaniard [believed of Roman parentage], wrote about a century after Virgil. He saw service in the East and then settled on an estate near Rome. Probably a commercial beekeeper, he gave very detailed and well conceived advice on many aspects of apiary management, including requeening, uniting and migratory beekeeping’ (Fraser). 3. Falk, S. Original boards, with spines professionally relaid on both volumes (end-papers replaced at same time), all in thor. vg. condition. Contents in fine condition. With author’s signature to ffep which reads ‘W. Herrod-Hempsall, December 8th 1932’. A thor. vg. set. (Harding 658). [50781] £325.00 Volume two is particularly hard to find and this work is still very much sought after for its content. He was renowned for his decorative watercolours of birds that he exhibited annually at the Royal Academy of Arts. Today, Tunnicliffe is less widely known as a printmaker. He came to prominence as an etcher in the late 1920s. It was as a printmaker member he was elected Royal Academician. For most of his subjects, Tunnicliffe drew on his experience of growing up and working on a farm near Macclesfield in Cheshire. A scholarship made it possible for him to study at the Royal College of Art in London yet the city never featured in his work.

The near vertical bedding of sandstone produces distinctive cliffs and rock formations with cliffs reaching around 50m high. The sea has strong tidal streams and races and is often subject to strong ocean swell particularly around St Ann’s Head. The Dale peninsula is an exposed plateau headland with both pasture and arable with rectilinear field pattern. Key Characteristics Skokholm is a wild, remote island with a flat top and sandstone cliffs. It is an important bird sanctuary and nature conservation site. Rough and jagged rock exposures and high sandstone cliffs, and rocky foreshores. The sea is highly disturbed and exposed with many rocks and other hazards, and strong tidal streams, races and eddies. The sea is heavily used by sailing cruising boats and day trippers, with some sea angling and diving and occasional wildlife trips to Skokholm. Due to the proximity to Milford Haven there is a lighthouse on Skokholm and at St Ann's Head.

Signature: …………………………………………………Peter John Bunten. Abstract The nature writings of Henry Williamson deserve revaluation. The qualities of Williamson’s work have never been fully acknowledged, in part because of the disproportionate attention given to the flawed and uneven novel sequence A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight (1951–1969). His controversial involvement with extreme right-wing politics has also adversely affected his reputation. This thesis will suggest that Williamson’s nature writings, in particular his animal biographies – Tarka the Otter (1927), Salar the Salmon (1935) and The Phasian Bird (1948) – represent his greatest literary achievement, and that these three major works merit a prominent place in any critical survey of the development of the twentieth-century English novel. Williamson’s use of the novel form to represent the lives of animals involves the complex task of conveying the experience and consciousness of non-human subjects. The degree to which this necessarily leads to an anthropomorphic approach will be addressed. In addition, it will be argued that his writings represent an early, and often ground-breaking, example of how narrative fiction can draw attention to environmental issues.

Three pair were heard from Panorama Heights in Stoke and I understand a pair snuck up behind two birders much to the birders’ surprise! Two broods of grey teal were spotted at Bells Is Sewerponds recently. Lake Killarney in Takaka township is the place to be for a picnic especially if you want to see dabchicks with a young one. Last week the chick was still young enough to ride on its parent’s back. Figure 1 Photo by Willie Cook. RECENTLY I read ‘ The Island’ by Ronald Lockley for about the third or fourth time, but this reading was a bit different. Last year while in the UK I paid homage to the man himself by visiting the Welsh Isles, well, with binoculars anyway, from the mainland at St Martin’s Head. The weather wasn’t conducive to boating, but the seascape and the landscape was enough to feel the spirit.
