We have incorporated much of the new stock into this catalogue. There are some particularly nice copies of books in the New Naturalist series, including two copies of The Hawfinch, by Guy Mountfort (items 450 and 451). Other highlights include Jonathan Kingdon’s East African Mammals, which never fails to impress (item 359). In the Fine, Illustrated and Antiquarian section, it was very pleasing to obtain a nice copy of what is considered by some as the ‘the greatest early British Bee Book’; Charles Butler’s ‘The Feminine Monarchy’ (1704), listed as item 213. We also include a wide ranging section dedicated to Plant Hunting which we will continue in Catalogue 114.     Seascape Character Area Description Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Seascape Character Assessment No: 26 Seascape Character Skokholm and Gateholm coastal waters Area Name: Looking north to Skokholm (left) and St Ann's Head (right) from 2km SE of Skokholm, 3.5 km from shore Looking east to Skokholm (left) and Marloes peninsula Marloes Sands looking east Skokholm from the air (©Sid Howells) 26-1 Supplementary Planning Guidance: Seascape Character Assessment December 2013 Seascape Character Area Description Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Seascape Character Assessment Summary Description This area comprises the remote island of Skokholm, the coastal island of Gateholm, and the south west facing, rocky, indented eroding coast and western half of the Dale peninsula. The near vertical bedding of sandstone produces distinctive cliffs and rock formations with cliffs reaching around 50m high. The sea has strong tidal streams and races and is often subject to strong ocean swell particularly around St Ann’s Head. The Dale peninsula is an exposed plateau headland with both pasture and arable with rectilinear field pattern. Key Characteristics Skokholm is a wild, remote island with a flat top and sandstone cliffs. It is an important bird sanctuary and nature conservation site. Rough and jagged rock exposures and high sandstone cliffs, and rocky foreshores. The sea is highly disturbed and exposed with many rocks and other hazards, and strong tidal streams, races and eddies. The sea is heavily used by sailing cruising boats and day trippers, with some sea angling and diving and occasional wildlife trips to Skokholm. Due to the proximity to Milford Haven there is a lighthouse on Skokholm and at St Ann's Head.

Three pair were heard from Panorama Heights in Stoke and I understand a pair snuck up behind two birders much to the birders’ surprise! Two broods of grey teal were spotted at Bells Is Sewerponds recently. Lake Killarney in Takaka township is the place to be for a picnic especially if you want to see dabchicks with a young one. Last week the chick was still young enough to ride on its parent’s back. Figure 1 Photo by Willie Cook. RECENTLY I read ‘ The Island’ by Ronald Lockley for about the third or fourth time, but this reading was a bit different. Last year while in the UK I paid homage to the man himself by visiting the Welsh Isles, well, with binoculars anyway, from the mainland at St Martin’s Head. The weather wasn’t conducive to boating, but the seascape and the landscape was enough to feel the spirit.

    'A Three Week Stint' (April 1946) by Winifred Bowman Early in February I was asked to go as volunteer cook-housekeeper for the first three weeks of the Skomer Survey. There was a certain amount of lofty talk about Aga cookers and yachts and within a few minutes I found myself hypnotised into saying yes. As the weeks went by and more details filtered through I began to wonder if I hadn't been a bit hasty. After all, I am definitely not an ornithologist, I am supposed to be a creative artist, and I didn't quite see how cooking for twenty-odd people on a lately uninhabited island off the coast of Wales was going to further my artistic ambitions. However, I have an incurable longing for the new and strange so I never really seriously considered backing out. I was met at Haverfordwest by Pat, the supply officer, who spent the summer in a tiny lodge at Martinshaven, holding on bravely to the job of maintaining the lifeline between the islands and the mainland. It was Pat who did the shopping, despatched supplies and visitors to Skomer and Skokholm, or put them up in her lodge when weather prevented the outboard motor boat from making the crossing. (Of course the yacht didn't arrive till after I left.) I only saw Pat two or three times in the course of my spell of duty, but our notes and lists and comments to each other were long and frequent and sometimes caustic, and by the time I left the island I felt I knew Pat very well.

From 2006/7, the list was continued in a file on the HP organiser and subsequent smart phones, backed up on my PC. The dates including months - are from the written book lists made from 1969 - 2007, and the computer file from 2006 to the present. The dates with just years - are estimates made from memory for books from the shelves, mainly for books between 1940 to 1969. From 2006/7, the list was continued in a file on the HP organiser and subsequent smart phones, backed up on my PC.
