OLD ST. MARY’S CHURCH OUR PARISH MISSION Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area. As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary’s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society. Page Two Old St. Mary’s Church October 4, 2020 Pastor’s White Board The Weeks Ahead... This week we launch into the busy month of October. October is usually busy. At the parish we usually have our ministry fair; fall sports are off and running; the Chicago Marathon is running by the church, and people are gearing up for the rest of the year and the holidays…. Even though we are more limited in our regular activities we still have events happening. Today, I invite you to look at and consider these reminders. VOTE. Check our website for ideas on how to form your conscience. Catholic teaching is very clear that individual consciences are inviolable. That being said, we are also called to have well formed consciences by engaging in research and debate with others and ourselves to figure out the right issues and right candidates to vote for. Check out VoteResources at oldstmarys.com. Be ready for November 3 or vote earlier if you are already ready, registered and raring to go! AND, this is a CENSUS year - don’t forget to stand up and be counted. Click CENSUS here. The Paulist Fathers have a special event coming up on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30p.m. You are invited to: Hope – from Coast to Coast. Join us for this Groundbreaking Gala for the Paulist’s new Center for Mission and Studies – either online or join a small group of us in person that night in the Commons. Paulist students and leaders of our national ministries have for years been headquartered in Washington, DC in our own building – St. Paul’s College. These days, our people have been sharing space thanks to the hospitality of the Josephite Fathers in DC. You know us, you know the Paulist’s have a unique charism and our interactions with others and growth in missionary spirit requires interaction with many people of different backgrounds. Our new house for studies and mission will help continue our ministry, and you can help us build the new home and our community. Remembering the Dead. November will soon be upon us. On November 2nd we will especially remember all departed souls. Usually we have our Book of the Names of the Dead out for you to add those who have died in the past year. This year, we invite you to submit the names of those you have lost or are remembering to the bulletin editor. We will compile the names to remember them. If you would like to include a picture of them too, we will include that in our memorial display online throughout November. In the Neighborhood. This Sunday evening at 5p.m. you are invited to a community forum for information sharing about the Midland Marijuana Dispensary looking to locate at 1420 S Michigan Avenue. Look for the Zoom Link on the front page of the website starting Saturday. And do not forget to take the Discipleship Survey on our website as we continue to look at our future as parish and Catholics. Have a great month everybody! Be well! Be safe! Many Blessings! Fr.
