Creative, colorful shots of the extraordinary and sometimes ordinary make up the pages of this book. One of my favorite photos is of a rare blue lobsters, but there are so many "favorite" pictures to choose from. I think it would be fun to use some of the photos as writing prompts for an English class. I took my time going through this book because I wanted to really enjoy and appreciate the photos. This is such a great book. Took a chance and ordered as a gift on strength of the description on Amazon. Fortunately I was not disappointed and I am sure that a lot of people would be happy to find this under the Christmas tree! Book is packed full of photo's of things you wouldn't normally see. These range from the open mouth of a hippo to an aircraft landing on a small caribbean island seemingly just a few feet above the heads of sunbathers on a nearby beach! Ideal book to browse through with a glass of wine in front of a fire. I think that even those who don't normally like reading would enjoy this as there is very little text ;- the photo's speak for themselves.     FALL 2018 ANTHROPOS Department of Anthropology Newsletter High-Flying Achievers Students majoring in anthropology study topics ranging from human anatomy, genetics, and biological anthropology to the study of other cultures, learning both scientific methods and how to describe new observations and insights critically. For this reason, undergraduate anthropology students are consistently among the top of their class at UT. Among the high-flying achievers this year was Sierra Roark, who received her BA in anthropology at UT in 2016. Sierra was one of three UT students highly commended in The Undergraduate Awards and traveled to Ireland to receive award. Anthropology major Daniel Ford was among the top five graduates in the entire UT College of Arts and Sciences. Daniel is a marketing research analyst at Shelton Group in downtown Knoxville, a leading United States marketing communications firm, where he worked during his college career. Biological anthropology doctoral student Alexandra Emmons, teaming up with Shawn Campagna, professor of chemistry, received a $5,000 grant from the Office of Research to study “Skeletal DNA Degradation through Bone Metabolomics.” The project combines the latest DNA sequencing techniques with mass spectrometry in order to identify microbial communities in human bone by the bio-molecules they produce.     COOKEVILLE CAVER FEATURED IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Megan Trotter Herald•Citizen Staff, Cookeville, TN Sunday, Jun 14, 2009 Kristen Bobo prepares to go down into a cave. Cookeville is getting national coverage this month in National Geographic Magazine, thanks to Cookeville resident Kristen Bobo. Bobo is a caver who has explored more than 700 caves all over the country and many right here in Tennessee. "I certainly wouldn't call it a hobby. It is my life. I work in caves; I play in caves," said Bobo. She not only surveys caves for the private and public sector, she also is one of the leading cave gate builders in the United States, having built more than 50 of the gates that keep out those who would steal or destroy the caves' valuables like ancient human footprints, pottery or the delicate animals and organisms that live there. It's not easy work. Just exploring the caves is a profession filled with danger. Bobo has broken multiple bones, suffered from hypothermia and even broken her back after a particularly nasty fall. Yet she still can't resist returning underground where she has seen beautiful cave formations, prehistoric cave drawings and even ancient burial grounds. Though the article in National Geographic is in the June edition of the magazine, the interview actually took place about a year ago, Bobo says. The author of the article, Mark Jenkins, called her one day and told her that he had heard she was doing "some great stuff over here" and wanted a first hand look at her caveing journeys.
