It is hoped that tournaments of all standards will be submitted, not just those of a high level. It will be possible for players without any current FIDE rating to enter the rapidplay or blitz list by playing games against rated opponents. All FIDE rating fees for these events will be waived during 2012. The framework of the new lists will be as follows: Tournaments commencing on or after 1st January 2012 may be registered. This should be done as early as possible, but not later than two days before the start. The Laws to be followed will be as set out in the Laws of Chess, Appendices A and B. All "Rapidplay" games will be eligible for rating. That is, each player must have at least 15 minutes, but less than 60 minutes thinking time; or the time allotted + 60 times any increment or delay is at least 15 minutes, but less than 60 minutes for each player. Only those "blitz" games where each player has at least five minutes, but less than 15 minutes, after adjustment for any increment or delay mode, will be rated. Thus, the time control of 3 minutes plus 2 second increment or all the moves in 5 minutes is acceptable. Both players must have the same allotted time. For players with existing FIDE ratings, their initial rating on both of the new lists will be that rating. Their rapid play or blitz ratings will be adjusted depending on their results in those forms of chess. © Europechess.net Page 4 The method used to calculate ratings in each list will be the same as currently used, with the exception that the K factor used will in all cases be 20. For unrated players this has the effect their rating, if they score higher than 50%, becomes Ra +10 for each half point above 50%, with a maximum of 400. If any player plays 35 games or more in a period, his new rating will be based solely on those games. The first pair of new lists will be published at 1st July 2012. It is anticipated that there will by then have been enough tournaments rated for the new ratings to be meaningful. Thereafter, lists will be published on the 1st of each month. The minimum rating for these lists will be 1000, in line with the lowered floor in the main list. New rules will be added for players who play more than 35 games in one rating period; or for new players who play a large number of games, to reduce the swings in Rating. Amendments may be needed to the regulations in the light of experience in the first six months of 2012. Decisions concerning any charges for either tournaments or players from 1st January 2013 will be made at the FIDE Congress in Istanbul in 2012. Federations are reminded that it will be possible to remove players from the new lists if the financial burden causes them too many problems. East Anglian Daily Times – columns July-December 2010 Saturday 3 July 2010 Good news, bad news and disappointing news about the County By Kevin O'Connell Championships. The good news is that two teams are through to the final. In the Under 160 (u1880) Suffolk thrashed Leicestershire 10-6 in the semi-final and will meet Yorkshire. In the U100 (u1400), Essex beat Lancashire 7.5-4.5 and will play either Yorkshire or Warwickshire in the final. The bad news is that four teams lost their quarter-final matches. Essex were particularly unlucky, missing out twice on board count tie-break. In the Open Essex lost 7-9 to Lancashire. Essex drew 8-8 against Nottinghamshire in the U180 (u2040) group and against Yorkshire in the U160 but went out on the chess equivalent of penalties. The Suffolk team attempting to defend their U140 (u1720) title sank 6.5-9.5 to Hampshire. 6TH LONDON CHESS CLASSIC (6-14 DECEMBER 2014) PLAY A SUPERSTAR! SUPER RAPIDPLAY OPEN (6-7 DECEMBER) This year’s London Chess Classic offers a unique opportunity for a few amateur players to experience what it’s like to face a legend of the game in a genuine one-to-one tournament game. Before the superstars cross swords with each other (10-14 December), the ‘Super Six’ are going to take part in the ten-round Super Rapidplay Open, over the weekend of 6-7 December, which is open to all to enter. The time limit is 25 minutes for all the moves, with ten-second increments. The first prize is £8,000. Let’s have a look at the sort of opposition a competitor could face if the Swiss pairings fell kindly... No. Name Country Age Classical Rating Classical Ranking Rapid Rating Rapid Ranking 1 Fabiano Caruana Italy 22 2829 2 2858 1 2 Viswanathan Anand India 44 2793 6 2809 6 3 Hikaru Nakamura USA 26 2775 7 2800 9 4 Vladimir Kramnik Russia 39 2769 9 2773 13 5 Anish Giri Netherlands 20 2768 10 2674 70 6 Michael Adams England 43 2745 14 2764 17 The Super Six will compete against junior players in the first round. A draw will be made on Thursday. Thereafter, tournament pairings will be made in the usual way, so, as the UK national lottery adverts used to say... it could be you! Seriously, this could be an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a keen competitor. Playing a superstar in a simul is a special experience, but a one-to-one game against an elite player is in a different dimension altogether.

  • Dvoretsky Lessons
My Last Game Purchases from our chess shop help keep ChessCafe.com freely In last month's column, I described a tournament from my childhood. And accessible: now I'll show you a game by a "chess retiree" whose competitive career ended a long time ago, that I played very recently. Obviously the criteria for evaluating old games and a new one are completely different. But what they have in common, besides the name of one of the players, of course, is also the fact that the story of these games (with a few changes) is going into the autobiographical book that I'm working on. I really like Holland. I used to play at Wijk aan Zee myself, then I took The Sergey Dolmatov to Groningen for the European Junior Championships, seconded Vadim Zvjaginsev at the same place in 1997 at the knockout World Instructor Championship, and went there for candidates matches in Wijk aan Zee and Tilburg. I still have the fondest memories about the hospitality of the Dutch organizers. Mark Dvoretsky Secrets of Opening Preparation by Mark Dvoretsky At a certain point trips started being organized for me to work with Dutch & Artur Yusupov [Find us on Facebook.] players. So, I worked in Tilburg in the late '90s three times with the country's then top grandmaster (along with Timman) Loek Van Wely. I also gave Translate this page lessons in Amsterdam and other cities. The young talents Erik Van Den Doel, Daniel Stellwagen, Jan Werle, Erwin L'Ami and Jan Smeets, who would soon form the backbone of the national team, participated in my training sessions several times.

  • Nutrition and Chess
A fish before the game? On nutrition, doping and chess Author: Karel van Delft This article is published in Dutch at the site of the Max Euwe Centrum d.d. May 16, 2010. See http://www.maxeuwe.nl/columns/voeding.html The article is a chapter of the book ‘Developing Chess Talent’. See also www.chesstalent.com Publication of this article is free if you send a copy to [email protected] and mention the site www.chesstalent.com During one of the Spartakiads, the team championships of the former Soviet Union, the Moscow chess team was served exquisite meals. An official remarked with some emphasis that these meals would make the players feel excellent, which would strongly motivate if not oblige them to perform excellently. „My wife cooks superb meals at home, and yet I cannot win all my games‟, was World Champion Vasily Smyslov‟s sharp reaction. A dietician once advised grandmaster Boris Gulko to eat carrots. Gulko did not really fancy carrots and passed over the woman‟s suggestion with the words „There‟s not enough green pigment in them‟. The physical condition of people, and therefore also of chess players, is influenced by nutrition – food as well as drink. Remarkably, there has hardly been any research into the influence of nutrition on chess performance. Why should top chess players be interested in nutrition or doping? A fish Hardly any top player in the Netherlands pays any special attention to nutrition. The same goes for the Dutch chess federation KNSB. The team of En Passant from the Dutch town of Bunschoten partake of a fried fish before each home match.

After exhibitions and simuls by Géza Maróczy in 1925 & Alexander Alekhine in 1926 given in the city of Buenos Aires, and the famous World Championship match in 1927 between Raul Capablanca and Alexander Alekhine, Argentine chess improved immensely, when many players stayed in Buenos Aires after the Chess Olympiad in 1939, due to the outbreak of World War II. Main immigrants were Najdorf, Eliskases, Stahlberg (later moving to Sweden), or already earlier Pilnik, plus today forgotten chess masters. Strong international tournaments could be held. The new events helped them in survival and gave a training. Keres co-won the Circulo in 1939. Other European players joined after WW II: ie. Next geographical outsider, not living in South America, who won a tournament, was Gligoric, later Ivkov, Larsen and Pachman, followed in 1960 by Fischer & Spassky, and Korchnoi & Reshevsky, respectively. ➔ Panno became the new top talent: Junior WCC 1953 and first native Argentine GM 1955.
