Ormiston Primary School Newsletter We can’t believe that it is getting to this time of year already! We’ve had a busy year with lots of exciting events and experiences taking place in school We’re looking forward to the next few weeks where we hopefully get to see a little more Scottish sunshine to make things sparkle a little more! Cooking and Learning Languages This week we have been cooking Spanish Omelette. We chose this recipe to link with our older classes starting to learn Spanish. From now on children at P5,6 and 7 will learn French from August to April and then will learn Spanish from April to summer. The children are loving Spanish and have been picked up words and phrases very quickly. Lots of children have been talking about using what they have learned on holiday. We can’t wait to hear about how they get on so please keep us posted on Twitter. Each year in the summer term the children from nursery to primary seven have the opportunity to cook on an open fire. This year that will take place on Tuesday the 18th of June. As always, we’re looking for some recipe inspiration and lots of wood! The recipe needs to be vegetarian and can be sweet or savoury. Please tweet or text us if you have any good ideas. We’ll be looking for wood from Monday the 17th. Any wood should be unpainted and not have any nails, paint or varnish on it. Collecting wood is always our favourite homework task of the year! ☺ Ormiston on Tour! Over the last few years we have been thinking about the activities we offer and have been trying to expand the range of outdoor experiences we can give our children. This year primary 3 and 4 have been rock climbing in Tranent, and P5,6 and 7 have experienced either coasteering, canoeing or paddle boarding. We are hoping to continue this next year too in addition to exploring what options are available for primary one and two. We have also been developing our overnight experiences and this year we are trying out two new leadership camps. The first one is for children in primary 3 who will go to Innerwick to the Old School House for an overnight stay on the th th 13 to 14 of June. The centre is run through the Outdoor Education department of East Lothian Council. You can see some photos of the centre here. Primary four are going to go for a night camping under canvas to the beautiful Winton estate just outside Pencaitland. The children hike to the site from school, cook their tea over a fire, play outside and then sleep in the tents they have Issue 2 2018/19 Have you been on our House Captains Ormiston Primary Twitter page recently? Cockburn Moffat Meadowbank Freya Stables Sam Smith Ormiston Isla Armstrong Erin Cameron EH35 5LQ Wishart @ormistonprimary 01875 610382 Etienne Flory @ormininjas Edwin Ramanauskas pitched. These experiences have been developed to help us to support the development of the children’s leadership skills and to give them opportunities to put what they have learned into action. We have tried to keep the costs as low as possible for these camps so the P3 camp will cost £10 per child and the P4 camp will cost £5. Children in Ormiston Primary will now be offered the following residential experiences: P3 Overnight Leadership camp at Innerwick Old School House P4 Overnight Leadership Camp in tents at Winton House P5 Two night Activity Camp. This currently takes place at Dukeshouse Wood near Hexham. P6 Overnight Leadership Camp in tents at Winton House P7 four night Adventure Camp at Benmore Centre in Argyll. The East Lothian Educational Trust can provide financial support to families who might find the higher costs of the P5 and 7 camps more tricky to manage. We usually send this information out to all families with the camp information at the appropriate time for your child but you can find more information here should you wish to learn more. Leadership roles for next year In June children in P2 to 6 will choose their leadership role for next year. We’ll put descriptions of each role up on Twitter to allow you to talk to your child about the different options and to think about what leadership skills they would like to develop through their role. Some jobs require an interview, some require an audition and other roles will be selected by the children currently doing the job. We’ll post more about this on Twitter nearer the time. School Uniform Now is a good time to be thinking about orders for sweatshirts and fitness t-shirts from Borders Embroidery. The last date for orders to be processed for returning to school is the 21st of July but the company recommend orders are placed before the school holidays for the fastest completion times. For school uniform we ask that children wear a white polo shirt/shirt, grey trousers/pinafore/skirt and a red cardigan or sweatshirt. Children in P3 to 7 require a pair of indoor shoes. For PE and fitness activities children are asked to wear a pair of dark plain leggings or shorts and a red t-shirt. We have specific t-shirts for fitness that can be bought from Border Embroideries but children can also wear a plain unbranded red t-shirt. There is also a hoodie available for fitness. P3 to 7 children change for fitness at lunchtime so the hoodie helps to keep them warm over the winter months. The hoodies are not part of the main school uniform and should only be worn for fitness. Football and other team kits are not allowed to be worn. We also request that children do not wear black jeans as part of their uniform. Some families choose to have their child’s name or surname embroidered on the hem of t-shirts and sweatshirts. This is embroidered just above the waistband in red thread so it is not immediately obvious but it Our Leadership Habits helps you to get lost property back again! If you would like to choose this option you should select the personalised options on the website. Dogs in playground East Lothian Council do not allow dogs in the school grounds. This includes dogs being carried no matter how cute they are! We would be grateful if you could let family members know this too. Thank you for your support. Online Payments After a few teething problems the online payment is working well. If you have not been able to sign up please get in touch with the school office and Maureen will help you. It is usually helpful if you bring your device/phone in with you and Maureen can show you how to work it. Parent Council Do you fancy coming along? The meetings last around about an hour and we talk about developments in school, how to support families and think about how we can raise money to support the children’s learning and developments. Our meetings are usually lively and you can choose to do as much or as little as you would like. It’s a great opportunity to get to know people in the village and to contribute to your child’s education. Watch out for the next Parent Council newsletter for more information but please tweet, text or call us in school if you would like any more information. Wooden car in playground In November Finlay in P2 asked if we could get another wooden car for the playground. This has been one of the most popular items for children of all ages to play with so we were keen to see what we could do. Thank you to everyone who supported the Matchbox Challenge, the children’s charity event and to Larissa for asking her employer for a donation. We are hoping to ask our wonderful Parent Council of they would like to contribute the last little bit and then we’ll be able to get the car in place for lots of fun. Watch out on Twitter for an update. Sunny Weather The last week has been beautiful and we’re hopeful for some more sunshine over the next few weeks. We’d be grateful if you could make sure your child has a water bottle to use during the day. The office sell them for £1 if your child would like to buy one. We have mains fed water fountains to give cool water but children can’t access this without a bottle. Thank you for your help with this. We’re looking forward to seeing you at some of the events coming up between now and the end of term. We’ll be looking for lots of people to come along on the picnic walk so we’d love it if you fancy a chance of brushing up on your rounders skills and come along to join us on the 25th of June! Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. Please tweet us with news of how your child shows the 7 habits out of school. If you write these hashtags in your tweet it will help us out.
