  • The Millergram Is Designed and Formatted by Tim Noble, Our Good Friend from Melbourne, Australia and a Former Navigating Officer with the Blue Star Line
The & MILLERGRAM by Bill Miller billmilleratsea.com Spring 2016 The Millergram is designed and formatted by Tim Noble, our good friend from Melbourne, Australia and a former navigating officer with the Blue Star Line. BOOKS: More scribbling! I am penning yet another new book these days, Maritime Royalty: The Queen Mary & the Cunard Queens, timed for the 80th anniversary (May 1936) of the beloved Queen Mary's maiden crossing from Southampton to New York. It will be a slightly larger book than usual, more of a glossy commemorative. It will be published by Fonthill Media over in the UK. Some sad news! Mainmast Books over in the UK is closing down as of Apr 1st. Mainmast were a longtime seller of maritime books – certainly one of the very best, in fact – and a highpoint for books on liners. They had a huge and diverse monthly list. Competition with internet book selling cast the decisive blow. A great loss! CARGO SHIPPING: Caused by the likes of downturns in the Chinese economy, worldwide cargo shipping is in a slump. Hundreds of containerships are currently laid-up, awaiting cargo. Meanwhile, Denmark's Maersk Line – the biggest containership operator in the world plus other, vast maritime holdings – has seen its profits crash by over 80%. In response, Maersk has sacked 4,000 employees, both ashore and afloat, and also called South Korean shipbuilders to cancel the building of some projected 20,000-capacity containerships. Page 1 CARNIVAL: Italy's Fincantieri shipbuilders has joined forces with Chinese shipyards near Shanghai to build the first generation of Carnival cruise ships especially for the Chinese market.

  • Cruise Ship Locations 16 May 2021
CRUISE SHIP LOCATIONS 16 MAY 2021 Compiled by Mike Pryce, Wellington NZ (Information believed correct at this date. Compiled from various sources and internet AIS, especially www.cruisemapper.com. Excludes ferries and cruise ferries. Many cruise ships have been in “warm” lay-up, when they have periodically moved from their berths or anchorages and gone for short voyages locally to give their engines and equipment “a run”, and including production of freshwater, before returning to lay-up. Ships at anchor periodically need to berth to take onboard fuel, food, provisions and other supplies. Some inter-ship crew transfers at sea are being made, outside port limits. With the resumption of “normal” cruising looking very uncertain in many countries in the near future, more cruise ships are likely to move to “cold” lay-up until the situation becomes clearer, whilst others go into shipyards for overhauls and surveys. Many cruise ships have been in lay-up for over a year, as the initial “pause” has been continually extended due to more Covid-19 outbreaks, and many financial assumptions made on the expectation of an initial two-months lockdown have needed reviewing. This has resulted in many recent sales of older ships, and limited cruising in the Mediterranean and Europe, where these areas are being affected by sporadic outbreaks in Covid-19 infections. The largest concentration of laid-up cruise ships is on the Bahamas Banks (east of Miami and south of Freeport) A large number of cruise ships are anchored off the south coast of England, west of Southampton. Another large group are anchored in the South China Sea, NE of Singapore.

  • As the Liners Disappeared: Learning the Joys of Off-Beat Cruising by Theodore W
MARCH, 2016 VOLUME XXXIII, # 3 Friday, March 18, 2016 – 6:00 PM At the Community Church Assembly Room, 40 East 35th Street, Manhattan As The Liners Disappeared: Learning the Joys of Off-Beat Cruising By Theodore W. Scull After his first crossings over and back aboard French Line ships LIBERTÉ & FLANDRE in July 1958, Ted Scull followed the liner habit for decades, though dwindling choices made it increasingly difficult. It was not until 23 years later that he embarked on his first cruise aboard a ship that he had traveled on as a liner: P&O’s ORIANA. Cruising soon turned out to be the way to continue sailing on the types of ships he loved, discovering new ones and matching them with winsome destinations. During an old-fashioned slide lecture, Ted will share several of his favorite ships and cruises, none of them exactly mainstream, and explain why he chose them and what he experienced. In no particular order, we go aboard Turkish Maritime Lines’ handsome AKDENIZ (just now being scrapped) along that country’s coast during one of Europe’s hottest summers; the tiny RENAISSANCE THREE between Puerto Montt via the stunning Chilean fjords and Patagonia to Buenos Aires, encountering icebergs and stormy seas; HEBRIDEAN PRINCESS, a 49-passenger, one-of-a-kind ship cruising the Scottish Isles, and Queen Elizabeth II’s twice-chartered yacht; COLUMBUS CARAVELLE embarking in Iquitos, Peru for an eight-day voyage down the Upper Amazon during flood season to Manaus; the venerable 1927-built DELTA QUEEN on the first of five trips, this one a four-rivers cruise in 1985; and the best ever aboard Swan Hellenic’s chartered ORPHEUS from Greece to Turkey, two ports in Syria (with overnights ashore), Port Said, through Suez to Safaga, Sharm-el-Sheikh, and finally Aqaba, Jordan, including an unanticipated boarding by Multi-National Forces shortly after the First Gulf War.

  • How to Work in the Cruise Industry
How to work in the Cruise Industry A GUIDE FOR TOURISM OPERATORS 2019-2020 Introduction To work successfully in the cruise industry, operators should undertake research to understand the cruise ship company’s target audience. Each cruise ship caters for a different target market; thus you need to understand these potential customers and their respective expectations. If your goal is to have your product offered as a Shore Excursion (Shore-Ex) it is important to be aware of the rules of engagement between your business and the cruise ship companies. For example: holding the appropriate licences and insurance; providing appropriate nett rates and terms and conditions; tailoring/adapting your product as required; and delivering on your service. Cruise Distribution Photo: Dale Baldwin Today’s Traveller Growth continues on the high-end luxury market with unprecedented demand and interest in expedition travel, while the middle market tends to decrease. Travellers’ needs have changed significantly over the past decade. These days, they are confidently independent; time, comfort, attentiveness, peace and space are the new luxury goods; travellers want a hassle-free holiday. They are looking for something more than a pre-packaged offering; they want a more personalised experience and there’s a continued desire for more shore excursions. Cruise ships used to be a destination in themselves but these days, decisions are being driven more by the port destinations than the on-board facilities. Hobart is competing hard against other destinations.
