Masters, Pupils and Multiple Images in Greek Red-Figure Vase Painting
MASTERS, PUPILS AND MULTIPLE IMAGES IN GREEK RED-FIGURE VASE PAINTING DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Sue Allen Hoyt, B.A., M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Mark D. Fullerton, Adviser Professor Timothy J. McNiven __________________________ Adviser Professor Howard Crane History of Art Graduate Program Text copyright by Sue Allen Hoyt 2006 ABSTRACT Little is known about Athenian vase-painting workshops of the 6th through 4th centuries BC. Almost no references exist in ancient literature, and there are few archaeological remains besides the vases themselves. I examined the technical details of vase-painting “copies”–images of uncommon scenes on vases by painted different painters– and compared the steps in the painting process, (especially the preliminary sketches), to see if these could supply any information about workshop practices. The research revealed that there are differences in sketches executed by different painters, and that there were often obvious differences in the care exercised in the different steps of the painting process. When the different steps consistently exhibit different levels of skill in execution, this suggests that workshops were organized so that workers with few skills performed the tasks that demanded the least; more-skilled workers painted the less-important borders etc., and the most-advanced painted the figures. On a few vases the sketch lines were more skillfully executed than the paintings that overlay them. Further, in the case of the Marsyas Painter and the Painter of Athens 1472, more than one pair of vases with replicated rare scenes ii exists. -

Waanders, Zwolle 1998 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_van012199701_01/colofon.php © 2012 dbnl / Rijksmuseum Vincent Van Gogh 7 Director's foreword This is an exciting period for the Van Gogh Museum. At the time of publication, the museum is building a new wing for temporary exhibitions and is engaged in a project to renovate its existing building. After eight months, during which the museum will be completely closed to the public (from 1 September 1998), the new wing and the renovation are to be completed and ready for opening in May 1999. The original museum building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld and his partners, requires extensive refurbishment. Numerous improvements will be made to the fabric of the building and the worn-out installations for climate control will be replaced. A whole range of facilities will be up-graded so that the museum can offer a better service to its growing numbers of visitors. Plans have been laid for housing the collection during the period of closure, and thanks to the co-operation of our neighbours in the Rijksmuseum, visitors to Amsterdam will not be deprived of seeing a great display of works by Van Gogh. A representative selection from the collection will be on show in the South Wing of the Rijksmuseum from mid-September 1998 until early April 1999. In addition, a group of works will be lent to the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede. We have also taken this opportunity to lend an important exhibition to the United States. -

Origins of Modernism in French Romantic Sculpture
2011 Florence Quideau ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ORIGINS OF MODERNISM IN FRENCH ROMANTIC SCULPTURE: DAVID D’ANGERS, DANTAN-JEUNE, DAUMIER AND PRÉAULT. by FLORENCE QUIDEAU A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Art History written under the direction of Dr. Susan Sidlauskas and approved by ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey January, 2011 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION ORIGINS OF MODERNISM IN FRENCH ROMANTIC SCULPTURE: DAVID D’ANGERS, DANTAN-JEUNE, DAUMIER AND PRÉAULT. By FLORENCE QUIDEAU Dissertation Director: Professor Susan Sidlauskas This dissertation repositions the place of four Romantic artists within the current discussion of Modern sculpture. Today, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux has displaced Auguste Rodin’s paramount place as the first Modern sculptor. The dynamism, suppleness, truthful movements, appropriate gestures, and accuracy of Carpeaux’s sculptures are considered the epitome of Modernist sculpture. This analysis argues that the portrait- busts and sculpted caricatures of Jean-Pierre Dantan (called Dantan-Jeune), Pierre-Jean David (called David d’Angers), Auguste Préault, and Honoré Daumier exemplified audacious artistic changes made thirty years before Carpeaux. These four artists showed a distinct rejection of formal portraiture and the values of artistic decorum by creating an -

Few men there are who having once visited Greece do not contrive to visit it again. And yet when the returned traveller meets the ordinary friend who asks him where he has been, the next remark is generally, “Dear me! have you not been there before? How is it you are so fond of going to Greece?” There are even people who imagine a trip to America far more interesting, and who at all events look upon a trip to Spain as the same kind of thing—southern climate, bad food, dirty inns, and general discomfort, odious to bear, though pleasant to describe afterward in a comfortable English home. -

The Revolutionary Career of François Gérard By
ON SHIFTING GROUND: THE REVOLUTIONARY CAREER OF FRANÇOIS GÉRARD BY JENNIFER MARIE LANGWORTHY DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Art History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor David O’Brien, Chair Associate Professor Lisa Rosenthal Associate Professor Oscar Vázquez Assistant Professor Jennifer Greenhill ii ii Abstract This dissertation examines the career of François-Pascal-Simon Gérard (1770- 1837) from its beginnings in the mid-1780s through the end of the French Revolution and provides a more complete understanding of Gérard as a key artist of the Revolutionary decade. A goal of this study is to set aside long-standing assumptions concerning Gérard’s political convictions and doubts about his artistic originality in order to shed light on Gérard’s critical contributions to Revolutionary art, and in particular, to the Davidian school. I demonstrate that, in the 1790s, Gérard moved away from the subjects and styles forged in Jacques-Louis David’s (1748-1825) studio. Most significantly, he reinvented classicism as a vehicle for moderate political themes, he reintroduced apolitical, sexualized imagery into classicism, and he established an artistic practice in which the serious business of the history painter was thoroughly integrated with that of the high-society portraitist. To do this, Gérard developed new modes of classicism, experimented with the emergent subject matter of Romanticism, and and explored issues of gender and sexuality in uncommon ways. During the tumultuous decade of the Revolution, when political consensus was at best fleeting and the traditional institutions of the French art world faltered, Gérard’s political and artistic flexibility allowed him not only to escape many of the consequences suffered by politically committed artists, but also eventually to thrive as a leading painter of the society of the late Directory.
