COLLELEVA Country: Italy Region: Marche Appellation(s): Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Producer: Colleleva Founded: 1984 Annual Production: 12,500 cases Farming: Sustainable As with every region in Italy, the Marche is a world all unto itself. On Italy’s less traveled Adriatic coast, in between Emilia-Romagna and Abruzzo, the Marche is relatively sparsely populated, and largely composed of gently rolling hills, green with agriculture, that end along steep limestone bluffs on the coast. This is the home of the Verdicchio grape, whose name comes from the root verde, describing both the greenish hue of the grapes and the resulting wine. The Castelli di Jesi DOC is one of the largest of the zones in which Verdicchio is grown and surrounds the town of Jesi and its ancient fortifications. The vineyards of Colleleva (Colle “hill”, and si Leva, “rises”) lie on the heights of the Marche: about halfway between the Apennine mountains and the coastline of the Adriatic Sea. The combination of eastern sun exposure and the cooling winds from the Adriatic provide an optimal microclimate for balancing ripeness with fresh acidity in the grapes. Verdicchio, also known as Trebbiano di Soave, has been cultivated in the Marche for many centuries. It is capable of making vibrantly fresh and crisp white wines that are a wonderful accompaniment to seafood. The Riserva bottlings can age gracefully. From Colleleva we have a wine in the former camp. During a tasting trip in the Marche, their stainless steel tank vinified Verdicchio was one of the stars among many, many wines tasted. The perfume is entrancing—at once fresh and rounded, and typical of the grape.

  • The Malvasia Wine of Bosa As an Example of Sardinian Terroir Through Its History, Economy, Traditions and Exploitation
SUMMARY Sardinia is not one among the major wine producing regions in Italy, yet the culture of the grapevine and of wine constitute invaluable goods for the island as they are intimately tied up to its 1 Dipartimento di Teorie e Ricerche dei Sistemi Culturali. • Our Sub-Regions: Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi
OUR SUB-REGIONS VERDICCHIO DEI CASTELLI DI JESI DOC OVERVIEW Marche's most sought-after grape variety at present is Verdicchio, considered one of Italy's best white varieties, and the primary source of Verdicchio is in the hill towns (castelli) around the city of Jesi in central Marche. The denomination is a mouthful: Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC. This wine was once famous for the fish- or amphora-shaped bottles that it came in, and it had a reputation for not being as interesting as the bottles. In today's wine world, where so-so doesn't sell, Castelli di Jesi wineries have dramatically improved the wine's quality, and the kitschy bottle has been replaced by a standard one that fits in a wine rack. The rules of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC wines are fairly simple: the wine must contain at least 85% Verdicchio. However, there are quite a few style and geographic variations. The wine can be still or sparkling, for instance, or it can be made in a sweet dessert style using dried grapes. Wines made in the southern part of the denomination where production first began can use the term Classico on the label, and that area has been subdivided into 99 small parcels whose names can appear on the bottle if the grapes are all from a single parcel. Superiore wines require grapes that are at peak ripeness at harvest. If those variations are not enough, there is also a Riserva version of the still wine that spends at least a year and a half aging.

Addendum regarding: The 2021 Certified Specialist of Wine Study Guide, as published by the Society of Wine Educators This document outlines the substantive changes to the 2021 Study Guide as compared to the 2020 version of the CSW Study Guide. All page numbers reference the 2020 version. Note: Many of our regional wine maps have been updated. The new maps are available on SWE’s blog, Wine, Wit, and Wisdom, at the following address: http://winewitandwisdomswe.com/wine-spirits- maps/swe-wine-maps-2021/ Page 15: The third paragraph under the heading “TCA” has been updated to read as follows: TCA is highly persistent. If it saturates any part of a winery’s environment (barrels, cardboard boxes, or even the winery’s walls), it can even be transferred into wines that are sealed with screw caps or artificial corks. Thankfully, recent technological breakthroughs have shown promise, and some cork producers are predicting the eradication of cork taint in the next few years. In the meantime, while most industry experts agree that the incidence of cork taint has fallen in recent years, an exact figure has not been agreed upon. Current reports of cork taint vary widely, from a low of 1% to a high of 8% of the bottles produced each year. Page 16: the entry for Geranium fault was updated to read as follows: Geranium fault: An odor resembling crushed geranium leaves (which can be overwhelming); normally caused by the metabolism of sorbic acid (derived from potassium sorbate, a preservative) via lactic acid bacteria (as used for malolactic fermentation) Page 22: the entry under the heading “clone” was updated to read as follows: In commercial viticulture, virtually all grape varieties are reproduced via vegetative propagation.

  • The Potential to Produce Italy's Greatest White Wine
Abstract Incredible Verdicchio: the potential to produce Italy's greatest white wine. Motivation for the study My professional wine life is strongly connected with family business – Italian restaurant. I’m always inspired by Italian grapes and wines - the fact that moved me to study at Vinitaly Wine Academy and to become Italian Wine Ambassador. Working much with Italian wines I was curious why in spite of an impressive diversity of native grapes (more than 500!) Italy still doesn’t have its great white wine like Riesling in Germany, like Gruner Veltliner in Austria, like Chardonnay in France (Burgundy). So maybe Verdicchio will soon become number one among Italian whites. Objective of the Thesis The objective of the thesis is to explore Italian native grape variety Verdicchio from the point of view of its uniqueness and its potential to produce Italy’ s greatest white wine. How is this grape perceived by the wine industry and by consumers nowadays? What are its perspectives on the Italian and global market? Could it become a strong Italian brand – not just in the affordable segment like Prosecco, but in the top league like Barolo? In considering these points, extensive research will cover specialist literature, professional tastings, published opinions of wine experts and journalists, data from wine producers databases, as well as a SWOT analysis of the potential Verdicchio brand. Methodology My research work covers a review of scientific literature, internet resources, Collisioni educational project’s papers and documents provided by Istituto Marchigiano di Tutella Vini (IMT). The practical part includes interviews with wine-producers of both Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica DOCs and the comparative analysis of Verdicchio with great varieties of the world (Chardonnay, Riesling, Gruner Veltliner) and other famous varieties of Italy (Pinot Grigio, Glera, Garganega).
