However, little is known about dipteran biodiversity associated with horse dung in Malaysia which could serve as vectors. Thus, a field trip to a horse farm located in Tanjung Rambutan, Perak, peninsular Malaysia was conducted in 2010. We examined adults and larvae of dipterans associated with 100 horse dung pats. A total of 1480 dipteran specimens from nine families were collected including Sphaeroceridae, Muscidae, Sarcophagidae, Calliphoridae, Sepsidae, Tabanidae, Ulidiidae, Dolichopodidae and Milichiidae. The lesser dung fly (Sphaeroceridae) which consisted of four species was the most abundant dipteran followed by sarcophagids and muscids. Seven species of muscids were collected from the horse farm and three of them were haematophagic namely Musca conducens Walker, 1859, Musca ventrosa Wiedemann, 1830 and Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758). Fly larvae collected from the dung were raised to adult stage and subsequently identified as M. conducens and Neomyia gavisa Walker, 1859. We reported new locality records for three species of Muscidae in Malaysia namely Pyrellia proferens Walker, 1859, Lispe kowarzi Becker, 1903 (new to peninsular) and N. gavisa Walker, 1859. Prior to this, British dipterists have struggled because unless you have a copy of the Fauna Ent. Scand. volume for blowflies (Rognes, 1991), you will have been largely reliant on Van Emden's 1954 RES Handbook, which does not include all the British species (notably the common Pollenia pediculata), has very outdated nomenclature, and very outdated classification - with several calliphorids and tachinids placed within the Rhinophoridae and Eurychaeta palpalis placed in the Sarcophagidae. As well as updating keys, I have also taken the opportunity to produce new species accounts which summarise what I know of each species and act as an invitation and challenge to others to update, correct or clarify what I have written. As a result of my recent experience of producing an attractive and fairly user-friendly new guide to British bees, I have tried to replicate that approach here, incorporating lots of photos and clear, conveniently positioned diagrams. Presentation of identification literature can have a big impact on the popularity of an insect group and the accuracy of the records that result. Calliphorids and rhinophorids are fascinating flies, sometimes of considerable economic and medicinal value and deserve to be well recorded. What is more, many gaps still remain in our knowledge.

The monophyly of the superfamily has been strongly questioned (Nirmala et al. 2001, Kutty et al. 2010) on the basis of DNA sequence analyses. Three of the four families of Muscoidea are treated in this paper, the fourth (An- thomyiidae) is covered in a separate paper in this issue of ZooKeys.

However, little is known about dipteran biodiversity associated with animal dung (e.g., buffalo, horse, cattle) in Malaysia, especially those are important in public health and zoonosis. Thus, field trips to a buffalo (Bubalus bubalis (L.)) farm located in Beranang, Selangor was conducted in March-April 2017. We examined adults and larvae of dipterans associated with 140 buffalo dung pats. A total of 2,775 arthropod specimens from 15 families were collected including Sepsidae, Lauxaniidae, Heleomyzidae, Calliphoridae, Dolichopodidae, Muscidae, Sarcophagidae and others. The scavenger fly (Sepsidae: Allosepsis sp.) was the most abundant dipteran followed by lauxaniids and heleomyzids. Eleven species of muscids were collected from the buffalo farm and three of them were haematophagic namely Musca conducens Walker, Musca crassirostris Stein, and Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus). The biodiversity of Diptera associated with buffalo dung was briefly compared with previous animal dung studies in Malaysia.
