ABSTRACT A community of vascular plants living in a salt marsh in the Atacama Desert (northern Chile) was studied. Environmental parameters such as high solar radiation, drought, wind and high salt concentration are the most important limiting factors. Above-ground vegetative organs of twelve species living in this environment were morphologically and mi- croscopically analyzed in terms of adaptive features that allow them to survive under these conditions. These species showed an interesting display of traits such as extremely reduced leaf area, striated cuticles, sunken stomata, compact leaf tissues, salt crystals, salt glands and vertically oriented photosynthetic parenchyma. These characteristics were statistically tested in order to establish the clustering degree among them; two leaf patterns were found within the sample. The particular leaf anatomy exhibited is discussed, considering it as being adaptive to the stressful environmental conditions of the area. Key words: Atacama Desert, salt marsh, leaf anatomy. The New World is one of the centers of diversity of the tribe with 24 genera and over 100 species, most of which form a clade called the Luciliagroup with 21 genera. However, the generic classification of the Luciliagroup has been controversial with no agreement on delimitation or circumscription of genera. Especially controversial has been the taxonomic value of achenial trichomes and molecular studies have shown equivocal results so far. The major aims of this paper are to provide a nearly complete phylogeny of the Lucilia group at generic level and to discuss the evolutionary trends and taxonomic significance of achenial trichome morphology. -

September 1997 Specimens representing 19 orders and 169 arthropod families (mostly insects) were collected from greenleaf manzanita brushfields in northeastern California and identified to species whenever possible. More than500 taxa below the family level wereinventoried, and each listing includes relative frequency of encounter, life stages collected, and dominant role in the greenleaf manzanita community. Specific host relationships are included for some predators and parasitoids. Herbivores, predators, and parasitoids comprised the majority (80 percent) of identified insects and related taxa. Prior to this, British dipterists have struggled because unless you have a copy of the Fauna Ent. Scand. volume for blowflies (Rognes, 1991), you will have been largely reliant on Van Emden's 1954 RES Handbook, which does not include all the British species (notably the common Pollenia pediculata), has very outdated nomenclature, and very outdated classification - with several calliphorids and tachinids placed within the Rhinophoridae and Eurychaeta palpalis placed in the Sarcophagidae. As well as updating keys, I have also taken the opportunity to produce new species accounts which summarise what I know of each species and act as an invitation and challenge to others to update, correct or clarify what I have written. As a result of my recent experience of producing an attractive and fairly user-friendly new guide to British bees, I have tried to replicate that approach here, incorporating lots of photos and clear, conveniently positioned diagrams. Presentation of identification literature can have a big impact on the popularity of an insect group and the accuracy of the records that result. Calliphorids and rhinophorids are fascinating flies, sometimes of considerable economic and medicinal value and deserve to be well recorded. What is more, many gaps still remain in our knowledge. -
