We are grateful for all the good we receive from behemot, from domesticated animals. Some of us eat them, some wear their skins, some eat eggs and cheese, some use medicines and even organs that come from animals, some wear wool and silk, some write on Torah scrolls, wear tefillin, and blow shofarot that come from animal’s bodies. WESTERN WALL ַה ּכֹו ֶתל ַה ַּמ ַעָר ִבי The Western Wall, known as the Kotel, is revered as the holiest site for the Jewish people. A part of the outer retaining wall of the Second Temple that was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, it is the place closest to the ancient Holy of Holies, where only the Kohanim— —Jewish priests were allowed access. When Israel gained independence in 1948, Jordan controlled the Western Wall and all of the Old City of Jerusalem; the city was reunified in the 1967 Six-Day War. The Western Wall is considered an Orthodox synagogue by Israeli authorities, with separate prayer spaces for men and women. A mixed egalitarian prayer area operates along a nearby section of the Temple’s retaining wall, raising to the forefront contemporary ideas of religious expression—a prime example of how Israel navigates between past and present. Drawn by the freshness and variety of produce, Israelis and tourists alike flock to the shuk, turning it into a microcosm of the country. Torah.org Understanding Lag B'Omer The Judaism Site https://torah.org/counting-the-omer/lag-baomer/ UNDERSTANDING LAG B'OMER by Torah.org THE HOLIDAY OF LAG B'OMER The holiday of Lag B'Omer is the 33rd day of the Omer count. There are two reasons why this day is greeted with happiness, a break from the customs of mourning observed by many for much of the Omer period. The Talmud tells us that during the time of the great teacher Rebbe Akiva, a plague raged through his yeshiva, his rabbinical school, during the Omer. He lost 24,000 students during this time; even the great schools in Babylonia, and those of today, are not as large. Rebbe Akiva went on to teach five more students, and it is they who transmitted much of Jewish tradition on to future generations -- so one can only imagine what was lost because those 24,000 other students passed away. The Sages explain that the reason for the loss of these students was that despite their great learning, they were not respectful towards each other. Considering their towering scholarship, they should have showed more care and concern for the honor of their fellows. There are various traditions regarding the observance of mourning during the Omer, based upon the days when students passed away during the plague. But all agree that the deaths were interrupted on Lag B'Omer. There was, however, a very notable death on Lag B'Omer -- of one of Rebbe Akiva's great students, Rebbe Shimon ben Yochai (also known using the Aramaic form of "son of," Rebbe Shimon bar Yochai). -

Yom Hazikaron : Degrees of Separation www.makomisrael.o rg 0 1 www.makomisrael.org Yom HaZikaron (Israel Remembrance Day): Degrees of Separation This lesson focuses on the challenge of marking Yom HaZikaron (Israel Remembrance Day) for North American Jewry. We explore the notion of commemorating in the wider American context, and expand on this to discuss Israel’s Remembrance Day, and what it means to commemorate from a distance. Goals : • The students will grasp the challenge of commemorating the fallen from a geographical and psychological distance. • The students will be challenged to assess the role of a mourner from afar • The students will explore the meaning of being connected to Jews they have never met • The students will explore various ways of moving beyond the obstacle of distance, allowing North American Jewry to connect to Remembrance Day • The students will be challenged to draw closer and connect to the fallen soldiers in Israel, despite the distance • The students will be given the opportunity to design their own program to mark Israel Remembrance Day Outline : Part 1 : Trigger exercise In the first part, students will participate in drama exercise to introduce the theme of the lesson. Part 2 : Discussion A. September 11 th The students will explore the idea of commemorating from afar by learning about the September 11 th memorial in California, and discussing how they think the tragedy should be marked by those who were not affected personally by it. B. Yom HaZikaron (Israel Remembrance Day) The students will apply their 9/11 discussion to marking Israel’s Remembrance Day and be challenged to think about how they should commemorate the day. -

Journal of Ethnic and Cultural Studies Copyright 2021 2021, Vol. 8, No. 1, 270-290 ISSN: 2149-1291 http://dx.doi.org/10.29333/ejecs/665 Between Cultures and Generations: Ethnic Activism of 1.5 Generation Immigrant Leaders Rachel Sharaby1 Ashkelon Academic College, Israel Abstract: This article discusses ethnic activism in advancing a religious holiday in the absorbing society among 1.5 generation social-political activists who immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia. The findings show that syncretism was created in the identity, and in the organization and leadership patterns of the Ethiopian leaders that reflected their goals. By displaying symbols of their ethnic identity, they struggled over the right of their excluded minority group to ethnic otherness and its inclusion in the collective space. They stressed the importance of these ethnic celebrations as a factor that unifies the people and the symmetry of this unity. They served as a bridge between generations, between tradition and modernity, and between the absorbing and the absorbed. The article supplies essential insights on how young leaders use their ethnic tradition as a resource for the recruitment of cultural, social, and political capital for uniting a minority group and integrating it into society. Keywords: 1.5 generation, holiday, identity, immigrants, leadership, syncretism. Israeli society is a society of immigrants who arrived in waves from different countries and communities worldwide, including Ethiopia (Reichman, 2009), who are the subject of this article. This article comprises part of a comprehensive study that investigated the ritual dynamics of the Sigd, a religious holiday of Ethiopian immigrants in Israel, from a multigenerational perspective, including elderly spiritual leaders (Sharaby, 2020a) and the youth of this community (Sharaby, 2020b). -
