Tonight we celebrate our honorees, the best in their craft, those who have embodied the spirit of hard work, the triumph of victory and through defeat attained victory again by keeping their eye on the prize; your successes personify the spirit of sportsmanship and civic responsibility of the individuals after whom these awards are named. Our founder, Dr. Charles B. Fisher believed that participation in athletics brought forth such qualities as teamwork, solidarity and character building, leadership and respect for others. As Pigskinners we know that great things do not come easy but are accomplished by how hard we are willing to work. We are mindful of our motto “Democracy In Sports” as we reach out to our youth to ensure that this organization continues to flourish; for the youth of today are the Pigskinners of tomorrow.

Rick Telander, Heaven Is a Playground.

In the Shadow of Jim Crow: The Benching and Betrayal of Willis Ward DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Tyran Kai Steward, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Hasan K. Jeffries, Advisor Kevin Boyle Judy Tzu-Chun Wu Copyright by Tyran Kai Steward 2013 Abstract This dissertation provides a historical study of Jim Crow in the North via the interplay of race and sport. It analyzes the 1934 benching of Willis Ward, an African-American football player at the University of Michigan and reveals the racialized social order maintained by Michigan’s famed Athletic Director Fielding Yost. This study probes how Ward’s benching affected his career, especially his work directing hiring practices at the Ford Motor Company. It also explores Ward’s conservative politics and his espousal of policies and practices aimed at maintaining the racial status quo. This project also chronicles how racism toward Ward shaped the politics of his teammate and future U.S. President Gerald Ford who supported affirmative action and civil rights legislation but opposed busing as a means to carry out school desegregation. A significant body of scholarship has examined the history of Jim Crow in the South. This dissertation, in contrast, provides an opportunity to examine the North’s separate but unequal practices. This previously unstudied history of Ward and other black athletes at Michigan offer four

Like the Irish, these varied wayfarers were ultimately perceived as Europeans whose whiteness underscored their capacity to Americanize. The stigma these new immigrants faced gradually faded, especially after the Quota Acts of the 18 1920s curtailed immigration from the parts of Europe from which they hailed. By the end of the Second World War, their children and grandchildren had gained a larger degree of acceptance. That opportunity to fit in and be perceived as American citizens, however, was USA denied to those who were not Caucasian. A few of the new immigrants’ descendants, like Hank Greenberg or Joe DiMaggio, were 1 Rob Ruck lionized as athletic icons and regarded as harbingers of Jewish or Italian acceptance. But little attention was paid to the connections between sport and the Jewish or Italian-American communities from which they emerged. Instead, the emphasis on segregation and the perception of race as a black or white affair diverted attention from the distinctive sporting patterns that had taken shape among these diverse European-American communities at a time when they had yet to be recognized as white by many native-born Anglo-Saxons. That binary also ignored class and skin color tensions within the African-American community; instead, it treated them as one homogeneous mass.3 But during the 1960s and 1970s, the civil rights movement and a turn toward social history triggered a sea change in the ways in which historians and other scholars connected sport to race The shadows of slavery and its aftermath long distorted the study of sport’s connection to race and ethnicity.

1 A SENSE OF WHERE YOU AREN’T: BASKETBALL BIRTHRIGHT AT BOSTON ENGLISH HIGH AND FATHERHOOD IN URBAN HOOP CULTURE A thesis presented by Justin A. Rice to The School of Journalism In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in the field of Journalism Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts December, 2010 2 A SENSE OF WHERE YOU AREN’T: BASKETBALL BIRTHRIGHT AT BOSTON ENGLISH HIGH AND FATHERHOOD IN URBAN HOOP CULTURE A thesis presented by Justin A. Rice ABSTRACT OF THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Journalism in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Northeastern University, December, 2010 3 ABSTRACT Observing the varsity boys basketball team at Boston English High—the nation‟s oldest public high school—on a near-daily basis, the author examines the role fatherhood plays in urban basketball culture. While societal stereotypes suggest growing up in a two-parent home fosters stability, many fathers in black communities push basketball on their children too hard. And while stereotypes suggest every college and NBA player was raised by a single mom, many coaches actually look for players who have traits most likely obtained in a two-parent home. The narrative of English High‟s 2005-06 season focuses on two players on opposite ends of the parenthood spectrum. Calvin Davis, a junior shooting guard, grew up without a father and struggles to find a viable alternative to replace the role basketball plays in his life. Mike Marsh— a senior small forward displaced by Hurricane Katrina—struggles to handle his overbearing father who insists he can earn a Division 1 college basketball scholarship even when Mike is willing to settle on smaller schools.
