2017 Annual Report CEO and Board Letter 2017 Annual Report CEO and Board Letter PLACEHOLDER: BOARD PHOTO To say that 2017 was challenging is an 2017 PPGWNI understatement. Board of Directors Yet together we persisted through every Barrie Ryan battle that aimed to hinder our ability to Board Chair access health care, control our own bodies, Karn Nielsen and plan our own futures. Vice Chair, Development Last year, Planned Parenthood was targeted Tim Jeske for defunding—not once, but three times. Vice Chair, Nominations Local youth and health educators were Kottayam Natarajan dealt a devastating blow with the early Treasurer termination of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program funds. And access to birth control Amanda Parrish and abortion services were and still remain Secretary under attack. Kirsten Fitterer Thank you for standing strong and never Jennifer Goulet backing down. Because of your strength Nikki Lockwood and continued support, these doors stay Terry Neal open! Dr. Patricia Ortiz In solidarity, Eowen Rosentrater Becky Scholl Clover Simon Dr. Carla Smith Florence Young President & CEO Karl Eastlund and Board Chair Barrie Ryan 2 2017 ANNUAL REPORT Intersectionality of Care Recognizing and remaining sensitive to the diverse challenges our patients face is a top priority at our 11 health centers. That’s one reason why 31,612 local people chose Planned Parenthood as their trusted health care provider in 2017. This year, you fought for advocacy work and awareness surrounding LGBTQ, immigrant, minority, economic, and gender rights. But your support didn’t stop there! You helped fuel our team of expert providers who are honored to serve all people in a safe, supportive space. We now proudly provide trans care in our region. “Patients began coming to us for gender-affirming hormones for transition. We quickly recognized an unmet need for local people taking steps toward living in their gender. In 2017, we had the resources, expert clinicians, and compassionate staff to begin delivering trans care to our communities.” - Sarah H., Yakima clinician 4 2017 ANNUAL REPORT Photo2017 Credit: ANNUAL Tori Osteraa REPORT Photography 5 Photo Credit: Tori Osteraa Photography Person-Centered Care Patients consistently tell us we are Don’t take their ONLY source of health care. In addition to being reproductive health care experts, our clinicians away my care! focus on whole-person health. Whether that means basic primary care in the exam room or a referral to other providers in our community, we are proud to be the first point of contact for head-to-toe health services including: • Immunization (HPV and referrals) • Behavioral health • Smoking cessation • Sports physicals • Domestic violence service referrals “As a cancer survivor, my visits to Planned Parenthood help provide peace of mind in addition to health care that is affordable and attainable. They genuinely care about my mental health just as much as my physical health.” - Taylor D., Spokane patient 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 9 Education Matters In July, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced they would be terminating Teen Pregnancy Prevention funds two years early. Future federal grants will fund abstinence-only programs and ban contraception demonstrations. 4,000+ local youth will be affected in communities with high teen pregnancy rates like Yakima, Okanogan, Spokane, and Tri-Cities. The move also reduces 90% of our education staffing capacity. Teen Council is left to fill a big gap. With your help, local teens will continue as peer educators, spreading medically accurate information to their friends, classmates, and neighbors. “The impact of my role as a peer educator follows me outside of the classroom. Even when not presenting, I am still prepared to offer resources, help, or knowledge to my peers at any moment.” - Ashley A., Teen Council participant 10 2017 ANNUAL REPORT Photo Credit: Tori Osteraa Photography Spokane Health and Community Education Center Your generosity made the dream of building the most advanced reproductive health care center in Spokane a reality. Donor contributions made it possible for our new Spokane Health and Community Education Center to see its first patients on November 20, 2017! As of December 2017, we have received $2.8 million in donations and pledges to support our new building. We continue to encourage and accept donations of all sizes with the goal of raising $4 million by the end of 2020. Thank you! “We support Planned Parenthood because they take care of EVERYONE. We specifically donated to this capital campaign because these champions deserve a building worthy of their work.” - Drs.
