Valuation of Water Quality Improvements in the Karapiro Catchment: A Choice Modelling Approach Dan Marsh1 and Ramesh Baskaran2 1Department of Economics, University of Waikato, Private Bag 3105, Hamilton, New Zealand, [email protected], 2Lincoln University New Zealand [email protected] Abstract Water pollution is widely considered to be one of the most important environmental issues facing New Zealand. Waikato region residents have reported that water pollution is easily their most important environmental concern in each of four attitude surveys conducted by Environment Waikato. Technical and regulatory mechanisms to reduce water pollution, especially non-point source pollution from agriculture are the focus of an intensive research effort both in New Zealand and internationally. This work should assist farmers and policy makers to identify the most cost effective options for achieving any given improvement in water quality. Research described in this paper aims to complement existing research projects by developing appropriate methodology for valuation of water quality improvements in New Zealand. It is envisaged that this type of information will inform the policy process by allowing decision makers to consider both the costs and the benefits of different levels of water quality improvements. This paper describes the first phase focussed on the Karapiro catchment which used focus groups and choice modelling in order to understand and quantify the value of water quality improvements in the catchment. -

Arapuni Finally Celebrates a Dam Good Job
Rassegna Stampa Mercoledì, 24 ottobre 2007 Arapuni finally celebrates a dam good job They've done a dam good job. That was the verdict from all quarters at the completion of the highly challenging two-year Arapuni Dam foundation enhancement project yesterday. In July 2005, Mighty River Power began work on the 80-year-old Arapuni hydro dam, 16km west of Putaruru on the Waikato River, to fix a seepage problem that was first identified in 1929. Yesterday, to the relief of the small Arapuni community, the dam roadway across the Arapuni Gorge, which connects the Waipa and South Waikato district councils, was finally re-opened. Speakers at the opening ceremony praised the "alliance" work of Mighty River Power, Italian foundation-engineering company specialist Trevi, and Brian Perry Civil, which carried out a precision-drilling programme to stabilise fissures in rock beneath the Arapuni Dam. South Waikato mayor Neil Sinclair said it had been a special project for the district. "Over the whole period, there was not one complaint from the community," he said. The $20 million Arapuni project attracted international interest because it was the first of its type to be undertaken world-wide while a dam remained operational. Mighty River Power project manager Tom Newson said the project took a year longer to complete than originally expected because of the difficulty in drilling 136 400mm interconnected holes up to 90 metres in depth from the top of the dam into the rock. The project won a Shell Environmental Excellence merit award at the New Zealand Contractors Federation 2007 conference in recognition of the efforts taken to minimise the environmental impact. -

Affiliate Te Arawa Iwi and Hapu Claims Settlement Bill Government Bill Explanatory note General policy statement Overview This Bill- • records the acknowledgements and apology given by the Crown to the Iwi and Hapu of Te Arawa affiliated to the Te Pumautanga o Te Arawa trust (the Affiliate) in the deed of settlement dated 11 June 2008 between the Crown and the Affiliate; and • gives effect to the deed of settlement in which the Crown and the Affiliate agree to a final settlement of all the Affiliate his- torical claims. Scope of settlement The Affiliate, whose area of interest covers over 500 000 hectares, has a population of approximately 24 000. The Affiliate is a collective of 11 iwi and hapu groups from the Ro- torua and Kaingaroa areas. In the deed of settlement and in this Bill, the Affiliate is defined as the collective group composed of- individuals who are descended from 1 or more of the listed eponymous ancestors of the Affiliate; and 223- 1 Affiliate Te Arawa Iwi and Hapu 2 Claims Settlement Bill Explanatory note • every individual who is a member of the listed subgroups of the Affiliate. In 2 instances land blocks are used. in addition to the criteria above. to define the iwi and hapu groups. Each ancestor is defined as meaning an individual who exercised their customary rights predominantly in relation to the Affiliate Te Arawa Iwi and Hapu area of interest at any time after 6 February 1840, and who is descended from the listed eponymous ancestors of the iwi and hapu. The settlement settles all of the historical claims of the Affiliate. -

Po Kauhau Lecture Series Ken Raureti Maunga Ruawahia and Surrounding Lands | 19 August, 2016 Thank you Tipene for paying tribute to our tupuna who have pased on before us and for wel- coming us home tonight. Tena tatou Ngati Rangitihi, thank you for coming together tonight to enjoy the hospitality of our tupuna, Rangiaohia, beneath our mountain, Ruawahia. Ruawahia is the reason we are here this evening; Ruawahia, Tarawera, Wahanga and the surrounding area. This is a special place to me. The lecture tonight will be divided into four parts. Part 1 – a video showing surrounding district from Ruawahia as the vantage point. If you were standing atop Ruawahia and looked in this direction, you would see Matata, Wahanga above, in the distance will be Moutohora, Putauaki, Te Whakatohea, Makeo??, Te Whanau a Apanui all the way across to Tuhoe, Te Urewera, Maungapohatu; to Murupara, Tawhiuau, Ngati Manawa; continuing on to Ngati Whare Tuwatawata; Onwards to Tuwharetoa and the subsequent mountain range. This is the vista from Ruawahia. It is akin to standing on top of the world. To me, Ruawahia is the pinnacle of the world. Ruawahia, our mountain. Ruawahia is the highest peak within the Lakes District, the Waiariki region, in Ngati Awa, Whakatohea and Te Whanau a Apanui. Ruawahia, our lofty mountain. How high is it? 1111 metres. The view from Ruawahia is a sight to behold. Firstly, as I reflect upon those who have passed on and whom Tipene has rightly acknowledged. Our mountain is sacred and of great signigicance to us as it was to those who have long since died and to those who have passed more recently. -

[This work lists 135 indigenous species and 15 adventive species in the Rapurapu catchment, North Mamaku. It is arranged by lifeform within four vegetation types related to topography. Kauri (which is towards the lower southern extent of its range), six podocarp species and 47 fern species, which represents a strongly diverse fern flora for the relative size of the area surveyed, are recorded in the Rapurapu catchment, northern Mamaku. Towards Thriving Kaimai-Mamaku Forests: A proposal to increase animal pest control 2020-2025 Pim de Monchy, Brad Angus, Jeff Milham, Andrew Thomas, Hamish Dean on behalf of the Manaaki Kaimai Mamaku Forum’s Joint Agency Committee Version 3.1: 1 May 2020, including feedback from MKM Trust, MKM Steering Group and the MKM Iwi/Hapū Roopu 1 Introduction In 2009, a partnership between government agencies, iwi, NGOs and a cross section of community stakeholders were established with the Kaimai Mamaku Catchments Forum. This partnership has since evolved to include a Trust, a Steering Group, a Joint Agency Committee, a Iwi/Hapu Roopu, the Forum itself, and three Project Groups. The vision of the Forum is: “The Kaimai thrive; hence we thrive”. Within that, one of the key goals of the Forum has consistently included restoration of the mauri of the forest through comprehensive animal pest control and biodiversity management. In particular: Healthy stands of indigenous forests Abundant native bird species Fewer pest animals and plants All parties understand that in order to succeed in the long term, sustained animal pest control must be under-pinned by a social licence to operate that is generated through effective local level iwi/hapū and community engagement, awareness and a ‘flax-roots’ drive for action. The Forum’s work in recent times, including Cam Speedy’s 2019 report, the recent advice from Kiwis 4 Kiwi, and the local Department of Conservation’s co- decision-making approach with iwi/hapū, have all highlighted the critical importance of this with iwi/hapū. Such a social licence exists in some places, but not in others. -
