HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". The scenes of the gigantic land rush is one of the most noted action sequences in film history. -

Laurel & Hardy's Visit to Southend in 1952
Laurel & Hardy’s visit to Southend in 1952 For one week in August 1952, a Lancashire lad and his American friend and comedy partner, stayed and performed in Southend-on-Sea. On the surface this sounds insignificant but mention the names of Laurel and Hardy, and we can appreciate just how significant this event is in the town’s history. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy remain unquestionably cinemas greatest comedy partnership. They made their first appearance together in a 1920 silent film called Lucky Dog. Their comedy team was formed during the silent movie era and when the talkies arrived in the late 1920’s, they made a successful transition to sound comedy. Their initial success was in the ‘short’ films that lasted 20 minutes but they progressed into feature length films, making 106 films together. Their last film made in Hollywood was in 1945 (they made 1 further film in France in 1951 which was not successful) and by then their popularity in America had waned. They believed their careers to be over. However their popularity had become international as they had made versions of their films speaking Spanish, French and German and also their films had been dubbed in other languages. In 1947, Bernard Delfont wanted to book an American act to tour the UK, initially for 12 weeks. He invited Laurel and Hardy to perform as part of a variety tour. They received a tremendous reception wherever they went and the tour lasted 15 months during which time they appeared in the Royal Variety Show as well as performed several European venues. -

News Release
NEWS RELEASE 26 th Annual Music Box Steps Day This Year Celebrated Online! Saturday, October 24, 2 - 4 pm LOS ANGELES – You can’t keep a classic comedy team, or its legion of fans, down! The pandemic may have prevented an outdoor celebration of the 26th annual Music Box Steps Day family festival, but not an online version, which with just as much enthusiasm will honor Laurel & Hardy and the famed 133 stairs on Vendome Street in Silver Lake where Stan & Ollie filmed their 1932 Oscar- winning short, The Music Box . On Saturday, October 24, 2020, from 2 - 4 pm, a virtual Music Box Steps Day will be broadcast worldwide on SLIA’s web site (silverlakeimprovementassociation.org) and its Facebook page (facebook.com/musicboxstepsday). If you miss the inaugural, the video will still be online for the viewing time of your choice -- and either way, it’s free! The presentation was produced by the Silver Lake Improvement Association (SLIA) and actor/entertainer Edward E. Bell, and will feature a special screening of the recently restored version of the ever-hilarious, 29-minute-long The Music Box , in which the bungling duo valiantly attempt to deliver a player piano to a home atop a steep hill. Other attractions include a reprise of last year’s on-site filmed recreation of the legendary comedy. Emmy-winning actor and film historian Stan Taffel will provide background information about The Music Box and the endless staircase where several other early comedies (and more recent films) also were shot. Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, staircase historian Charles Fleming, and other prominent figures will be zoomed in. -
