Il faut alors l’entendre comme un équivalent du terme anglais cover, qui désigne toute nouvelle version d’un morceau obtenue à partir d’un original. Le problème posé par l’ensemble formel désigné par le terme « reprise » ainsi entendu réside dans sa capacité à accueillir, sans les distinguer ni les interroger, de nombreuses pratiques musicales pourtant hétérogènes. C’est l’une des raisons pour laquelle cet ensemble a fini par désigner un genre où se perdent les spécificités de la reprise comme « art de refaire », mais aussi, et plus encore, comme « art de revivre ».
