Contact: Urbano Dominguez, University of Valladolid and Pieter De Vries, TU Delft 16:30 - 18:30 Open workshop SEFI Working Group on Continuing Engineering Education “Preparing engineers for the challenges of global work teams: a workshop” There is a new sociology being born in the world of work as individuals find themselves increasingly in teams that are cross-cultural in nature and that interact in virtual, technology-driven environments. It is a reality that is changing the face of the “workplace.” Are we preparing our engineers to work effec- tively in these settings? Companies that seek to be competitive in the global marketplace must factor an ability to succeed in these environments into their leadership equations and organizational capabilities, and universities must consider how they prepare individuals for the new world-of-work realities. In this workshop, we explore the characteristics of distributed teams, the cross-cultural and virtual skills required for success, and consider some of the key factors that we know contribute to successful global teams. Participants will be challenged to consider if their own engineering education programs are preparing students for this environment. A video case study of a global team provides an engaging and insightful centrepiece for this highly interactive workshop. Target Audience: This workshop is appropriate for anyone involved in the provision of engineering education / technical education to students. It will be valuable to those providing programmes at all levels: undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Contact: Kirsti Miettinen, Aalto University 4 / 2013 3 16:30 - 18:30 Open workshop SEFI Working Group on Sustainability The working group sustainability in engineering will allow the participants to exchange about their practices to promote sustainable development in their teachings /institutions. Last year a particular focus had been put on transdisciplinary multicultural projects and on the work with association of stu- dents. Contact: Anne-Marie Jolly, Polytech’Orléans 17:00 - 18:00 Open workshop SEFI Working Group on Ethics and Engineering Education The workshop on ethics and engineering education will provide participants with an opportunity to consider: 1) practices for the wider engagement of engineering faculty in ethics education, 2) current research needs and questions in ethics education, and 3) future initiatives and strategy of the Working Group. Interactions with related groups / initiatives on, for example, gender and diversity, sustainability and leadership development will also be considered. Contact: Esat Alpay, Imperial College London 19th of September 10:00 - 13:00 Open workshop SEFI Working Group on Gender and Diversity On the occasion of SEFIs anniversary we will look back and consider the development and success of women in engineering / gender & diversity in Engineering Education. All participants may take part with stories, data, concepts and best practice. In the centre of discussion will be the question how gen- der and diversity can be linked mandatory and sustainable in the field of engineering education and engineering education research. Contact: Susanne Ihsen, TU Munich Post-conference workshops on 20 September 8:30 - 17:00 SASICE workshop 13:00 - 15:00 Open workshop SEFI Working Group Physics and Engineering Education “Assessment in the Physics Lab: How and what?” Assessment is a hot topic, the assessment of laboratory activities, however, remains a less studied re- search domain. We would like to start the discussion with a contribution of each participant: which learning outcomes do you aim at in your physics lab and how do you evaluate the degree of attain- ment? The resulting overview will be complemented with pros and contras and compared with results found in literature. We hope that everybody will return home with a basket full of ideas and/or some extra arguments on what to change and what to retain of the current situation. Contact: Greet Langie, KU Leuven During the annual conference the “40 YEARS OF LEADERSHIP AND RECOGNITION” event is organised on 19th September afternoon at the Arenberg Castle, “Salon” of the Dean, KU Leuven, in the context of the SEFI Annual Conference and Celebration of the 40th SEFI Anniversary. The event is organised to honour the supporters, leaders and pioneers who have worked with SEFI during its first 40 years for the benefit of engineering education in Europe and in the World and therefore is on special invitation only. It is obtainable at the SEFI HQ at the price of € 25 for members, and € 40 for non members. Through policy descriptions and strategy statements, this publication reveals what is happen- ing behind the scenes on the EU, as well as national and institutional levels. The many practical cases presented manifest the concrete efforts put to materialising the Knowledge Triangle: cre- ating more synergy between research, education and innovation. The recent research findings shared open the curtain to what innovativeness means, how it could be fosterd, and why it is imperative in advancing the sustainable Knowledge Society. In a series of projects such as EUGENE EU Academic network project, workshops and conferences, all focussing on the triple play of research, education and innovation, the authors were able to share their common understandings and to develop and create advanced new concepts. This book brings together their lessons learnt in an interesting com- pilation of articles, reflecting the authors consolidated knowledge together with some brand new insights. For further information about this publication, please go to: http://www.sefi.be/?p=3443 European Journal of Engineering Education Vol. 38 The new Volume of the EJEE, the bimonthly Journal of SEFI, is obtainable now.
