Paw Patrol Story & Photos by Emily Dieckman

Deputy Leo and Officers Luke and Leia offer comfort in mental health crises.

A little girl who survived abuse awaits an interview with police to document what happened to her. Call center operators at a local crisis hotline gear up for another day taking calls. An officer returns to the department after a 36-hour Brothers Officer Luke and homicide call. Deputy Leo hanging out.

Situations like these call for Deputy Leo, a 97-pound yellow Labrador retriever. One of the newest members of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD), and the inaugural member of the Crisis Canine Response Team, Leo is a therapy dog. He’s trained to help deescalate situations and comfort people having mental health crises or who have experienced trauma.

“I see people smile. I see people laugh,” said Leo’s handler Detective Shawn Degan, who works in the department’s Mental Health Investigative Support Team unit. “I always get people saying ‘This is the best part of my day. Grooming Can he come back tomorrow?’” In 2017, Sgt. Jill Isley, Supervisor of the Mental Health Investigative Support Team, suggested Boarding PCSD institute their own therapy dog program as a way to build a bridge between officers Detective Degan and Deputy Leo pose for a photo and the community. She and Detective Degan Training connected with Jeremy Brown, owner of The Complete Canine. Brown helped them select six-month old Leo from a breeder in Wilcox.

After completing Canine Good Citizen Class through the American Kennel Club, the department began looking into advanced obedience training to register Leo as a therapy dog. Registered therapy dogs must be able to calmly navigate environments like hospitals — long hallways, people confined to (520) 290-8181 different rooms and obstacles like staircases. Of course, they didn’t want to bring an untrained dog into an actual hospital, so they thought about what 2001 N. Sabino Canyon Rd. environments are similar to hospitals. That’s how they came up with the idea of taking Leo to jail. www.sabinocanyonpetresort.com Pups in jail

Inmates reported feeling happier after his visit, and their actions reflected it: In the period following Leo’s training, there was

14 The Tucson Dog January/February 2019 a reduction in the number of assaults inmates committed on each other and on staff. The jail’s chief decided he wanted two dogs like Leo on his staff.

With more guidance from Brown, the department bought two of Leo’s siblings from the same breeder, named them Officers Luke and Leia, and designated them the Corrections Pet Assisted Stress Unit. The two dogs have a different home base than Leo, but they all have the same area of expertise: comforting those who need it. The purchase of all three dogs was made possible by a $10,000 gift from Arizona Complete Health.

Some officers in the department were hesitant about the program; they didn’t understand the role a cuddly dog would fill. One in particular—a former SWAT member—was adamant that the program was stupid, and a total waste of money.

“Now, every day he comes in and he’s just a little kid who wants to see the dog,” Detective Degan smiles. “He admits it—‘I didn’t think it had any value, but it’s priceless.’”

Everyone who meets Leo, Luke, or Leia seems to feel the same way. When a family had to face their daughter’s accused killer on a TV screen in court, Leia was with them. Since becoming inspired by Greyhounds, much of her art shifted in that direction. Using social media, she attempted to “friend” anyone who featured a Greyhound in their profile, thus building her client base. This also sparked another unforeseen opportunity.

One day in Sedona, Comet wanted to go for a walk. Wolf had already started training her as a service dog. By chance, they met some neighbors who knew of a surgeon that could help him. He thought it was a long shot but went for it. Now, after surgery and decade of therapy, he can do many things he never thought he would again. He still needs help with certain things. These are all things he has trained Comet to do for him, making her the very first Greyhound Comet and Wolf service animal. She was so impactful in his life that he wrote and published a memoir of their story, Comet’s Tale: How the Dog I Saved Saved Me.

In Tucson, Howard’s business was doing well. She was donating and selling her Greyhound and other animal-themed art to different groups at wholesale prices, thus enabling both to benefit. While happily working on her art, she noticed one of her hundreds of new Greyhound social media friends repeatedly popping up on her news feed.
