CHERIE SIVIGNON

Members of the Tasman Youth Council plan to have a say on long-term planning in Tasman district. Waimea College students Taylah Shuker, Mara Leyland and Abbey Bremner last week spoke to councillors on the Tas- man District Council community development committee, outlining some of the youth coun- cil’s work last year along with its plans for this year. The three year 13 pupils are members of the Waimea College cluster of Tasman Youth Council. Taylah said, in her view, the Waimea College cluster was ‘‘very politically aware and active’’ and hoped to ‘‘start engaging youth in Fabienne voting’’. The national rollout of the new Fire and Emergency New Zealand structure may mean more resources for its rural volunteers. Motueka Volunteer Fire Brig- ade’s chief fire officer, Mike Riddell, said the community would continue to see brigades do what they do. However, rural brigades would tend to get more resourcing and there would be greater interaction between rural and urban forces, he said. Unlike some parts of the country Top of the South rural and urban crews already worked together closely, he said. ‘‘We have already been doing a lot of what is happening under the new structure.’’ The Waimea Rural Fire Auth- ority (WRFA) was disbanded with the inception of Fire Emergency NZ on July 1. While Ian Reade remains the region’s principal rural fire officer he now heads the Nelson- Tasman District. However, its role of coordinating the collaboration between the region’s councils, the Department of Conservation and forest owners will continue, he said. Members of the Tasman Rural Fire Force and the Motueka Volunteer Fire Brigade gathered informally on Saturday to mark the inception of Fire Emergency New Reid said the region’s volun- Zealand.
